Dear Partner,

I’m glad ‘you’re in’ for our journey to Washington DC. The Worldwide Partner Conference this year will focus on infinite possibilities, specifically exploring Microsoft Cloud Services. Microsoft is ‘all-in’ with the cloud and we would like to explore together this challenging opportunity. The evolution to the cloud is one of the most dramatic evolutions the IT-industry has ever encountered. This paradigm shift needs all our attention. Finding the balance between taking the necessary steps to prepare for the cloud (r)evolution and staying current on our latest technologies and products is the journey we have ahead of us.

At the moment we are preparing this booklet, already 80 people from Belgium have registered, representing more than 60 different partners. I'm grateful that my Belux colleagues and I will be able to spend time with you in Washington DC. The conference will provide you with invaluable resources for adopting our cloud strategy & offerings. You will have the opportunity to acquire technology information and strategic business insights and have the opportunity to forge new collaborative partnerships. Not only from a Microsoft perspective. Leading industry analysts such as Gartner, IDC and Forrester will give you expert advice and provide you with competitive information that you can use for your business-planning. You will definitely be inspired by the keynote speech of Bill Clinton, former president of the United States.

Besides all the interesting keynotes, sessions, hands-on labs, the Worldwide Partner Conference is the opportunity to connect with thousands of partners from all over the globe, Microsoft staff and Microsoft Belux people. Microsoft Belux is sending a delegation of more than 20 people. This group is there for you and to make sure you get the most out of your investment. We will work together on the plans for next year. We will make sure that you feel fully equipped and armed to face the challenges and opportunities ahead of us. Let’s exchange ideas, connect and interact to make sure we have a compelling joined business plan.

In this booklet you will find more details on Washington DC, the planned activities and the people joining this year. The Belux program will help you to discover & explore this beautiful city and it will give you the time to get to know colleagues of other partners and the whole Microsoft Belux Delegation.

Thanks again for your commitment! I am confident that this journey will be beneficial to your partnership with Microsoft and provide you with useful insights to guarantee the future growth and profitability of your company. You will return home ‘inspired’ and with tons of useful information to play an active part in this paradigm shift.

No doubt you will return with good memories on the great experiences and good fun you enjoyed during these days.

Enjoy your stay!

Washington, DC

Washington, DC, formally the District of Columbia and commonly referred to as Washington, the District, or simply DC, is the capital of the United States, founded on July 16, 1790. The City of Washington was originally a separate municipality within the Territory of Columbia until an act of Congress in 1871 effectively merged the City and the Territory into a single entity called the District of Columbia. It is for this reason that the city, while legally named the District of Columbia, is known as Washington, D.C. The city shares its name with the U.S. state of Washington, which is located on the country's Pacific coast.

The city is located on the north bank of the Potomac River and is bordered by the states of Virginia to the southwest and Maryland to the other sides. The District has a resident population of 599,657; because of commuters from the surrounding suburbs, its population rises to over one million during the workweek. The Washington Metropolitan Area, of which the District is a part, has a population of 5.3 million, the ninth-largest metropolitan area in the country.

Article One of the United States Constitution provides for a federal district, distinct from the states, to serve as the permanent national capital. The centers of all three branches of the federal government of the United States are located in the District, as are many of the nation's monuments and museums. Washington, D.C. hosts 174 foreign embassies as well as the headquarters of the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the Organization of American States (OAS), the Inter-American Development Bank, and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). The headquarters of other institutions such as trade unions, lobbying groups, and professional associations are also located in the District.

The city is governed by a mayor and a 13-member city council. However, the United States Congress has supreme authority over Washington, D.C., and may overturn local laws. Residents of the District therefore have less self-governance than residents of the states. The District has a non-voting, at-large Congressional delegate, but no senators. D.C. residents could not vote in presidential elections until the ratification of the Twenty-third Amendment to the United States Constitution in 1961.

Geography

The District has a total area of 68.3 square miles (177 km2), of which 61.4 square miles (159 km2) is land and 6.9 square miles (18 km2) (10.16%) is water. The District is no longer 100 square miles (260 km2) due to the retrocession of the southern portion of the District back to the Commonwealth of Virginia in 1846. The District's current area consists only of territory ceded by the state of Maryland. Washington is therefore surrounded by the states of Maryland to the southeast, northeast, and northwest and Virginia to the southwest. The District has three major natural flowing streams: the Potomac River and its tributaries the Anacostia River and Rock Creek. Tiber Creek, a watercourse that once passed through the National Mall, was fully enclosed underground during the 1870s.

Climate

Washington is located in the humid subtropical climate zone, exhibiting four distinct seasons. Its climate is typical of Mid-Atlantic U.S. areas removed from bodies of water.

The District is located in plant hardiness zone 8a near downtown, and zone 7b elsewhere in the city, indicating a temperate climate. Spring and fall are warm, with low humidity, while winter

is cool, with annual snowfall averaging 37 cm. Average winter lows tend to be around −1 °C from mid-December to mid-February. Blizzards affect Washington on average once every four to six years. The most violent storms are called "nor'easters", which typically feature high winds, heavy rains, and occasional snow. These storms often affect large sections of the U.S. East Coast.

Summers are hot and humid, with the July high and low averaging 31 °C and 21 °C, though the high will surpass 35 °C, accompanied by high dew points. The combination of heat and humidity in the summer brings very frequent thunderstorms, some of which occasionally produce tornadoes in the area.

Demographics

According to the 2007 American Community Survey conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau, the population distribution of Washington, D.C. is 55.6% Black or African American, 36.3% White, 3.1% Asian, and 0.2% American Indian. Individuals from some other race made up 4.8% of the District's population while individuals from two or more races made up 1.6%. In addition, Hispanics of any race made up 8.3% of the District's population. There were also an estimated 74,000 foreign immigrants living in Washington, D.C. in 2007. Major sources of immigration include individuals from El Salvador, Vietnam, and Ethiopia, with some concentration of Salvadorans in the Mount Pleasant neighborhood.

Economy

Washington has a growing, diversified economy with an increasing percentage of professional and business service jobs. The gross state product of the District in 2008 was $97.2 billion, which would rank it No. 35 compared to the 50 U.S. states. In 2008, the federal government accounted for about 27% of the jobs in Washington, D.C. This is thought to immunize Washington to national economic downturns because the federal government continues operations even during recessions. However, as of January 2007, federal employees in the Washington area comprised only 14% of the total U.S. government workforce. Many organizations such as law firms, independent contractors (both defense and civilian), non-profit organizations, lobbying firms, trade unions, industry trade groups, and professional associations have their headquarters in or near D.C. to be close to the federal government.

As of January 2010, the Washington Metropolitan Area had an unemployment rate of 6.9%; the second-lowest rate among the 49 largest metro areas in the nation. The District of Columbia itself had an unemployment rate of 12% during the same time period. The District has growing industries not directly related to government, especially in the areas

of education, finance, public policy, and scientific research. George Washington University, Georgetown University, Washington Hospital Center, Howard University, and Fannie Mae are the top five non-government-related employers in the city. There are five Fortune 1000 companies based in Washington, of which two are also Fortune 500 companies.

Architecture

The architecture of Washington varies greatly. Six of the top 10 buildings in the American Institute of Architects' 2007 ranking of "America's Favorite Architecture" are located in the District of Columbia: the White House; the Washington National Cathedral; the Thomas Jefferson Memorial; the United States Capitol; the Lincoln Memorial; and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. The neoclassical, Georgian, gothic, and modern architectural styles are all reflected among those six structures and many other prominent edifices in Washington. Notable exceptions include buildings constructed in the French Second Empire style such as the Old Executive Office Building.

Outside downtown Washington, architectural styles are even more varied. Historic buildings are designed primarily in the Queen Anne, Châteauesque, Richardsonian Romanesque, Georgian revival, Beaux-Arts, and a variety of Victorian styles. Rowhouses are especially prominent in areas developed after the Civil War and typically follow Federalist and late Victorian designs. Since Georgetown was established before the city of Washington, the neighborhood features the District's oldest architecture. The Ronald Reagan Building is the largest building in the District with a total area of approximately 3.1 million square feet (288,000 m2).

Culture

Historic sites and museumsThe National Mall is a large, open park area in the center of the city. Located in the center of the Mall are the Washington Monument and the Jefferson Pier. Also located on the mall are the Lincoln Memorial, the National World War II Memorial at the east end of the Reflecting Pool, the Korean War Veterans Memorial, and the

Vietnam Veterans Memorial. The National Archives houses thousands of documents important to American history including the Declaration of Independence, the United States Constitution, and the Bill of Rights.

maintains most of the nation's official museums and galleries in Washington, D.C. The U.S. government partially funds the Smithsonian, thus making its collections open to the public free of charge. The most visited of the Smithsonian museums in 2007 was the National Museum of Natural History located on the National Mall. Other Smithsonian Institution museums and galleries located on the mall are: the National Air and Space Museum; the National Museum of African Art; the National Museum of American History; the National Museum of the American Indian; the Sackler and Freer galleries, which both focus on Asian art and culture; the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden;

the Arts and Industries Building; the S. Dillon Ripley Center; and the Smithsonian Institution Building (also known as "The Castle"), which serves as the institution's headquarters.

Performing arts and musicWashington, D.C. is a national center for the arts. The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts is home to the National Symphony Orchestra, the Washington National Opera, and the Washington Ballet. The Kennedy Center Honors are awarded each year to those in the performing arts who have contributed greatly to the cultural life of the United States. The President and First Lady typically attend the Honors ceremony, as the First Lady is the honorary chair of the Kennedy Center Board of Trustees. Washington also has a local independent theater tradition. Institutions such as Arena Stage, the Shakespeare Theatre Company, and the Studio Theatre feature classic works and new American plays.

The U Street Corridor in Northwest D.C., known as "Washington's Black Broadway", is home to institutions like Bohemian Caverns and the Lincoln Theatre, which hosted music legends such as Washington-native Duke Ellington, John Coltrane, and Miles Davis.

Sports

Washington, D.C. is home to five major professional men's teams. The Washington Wizards (National Basketball Association) and the Washington Capitals (National Hockey League) both play at the Verizon Center in Chinatown. Nationals Park, which opened in Southeast D.C. in 2008, is home to the Washington Nationals (Major League Baseball). D.C. United (Major League Soccer) plays at RFK Stadium. The Washington Redskins (National Football League) play at nearby FedExField in Landover, Maryland.

Government

Article One, Section Eight of the United States Constitution grants the U.S. Congress ultimate authority over Washington, D.C. The District of Columbia did not have an elected city government until the passage of the 1973 Home Rule Act. The Act devolved certain

Congressional powers over the District to a local government administered by an elected mayor, currently Adrian Fenty, and the thirteen-member Council of the District of Columbia. However, Congress retains the right to review and overturn laws created by the city council and intervene in local affairs. Each of the city's eight wards elects a single member of the council and five members, including the chairman, are elected at large. There are 37 Advisory Neighborhood Commissions (ANCs) elected by small neighborhood districts. ANCs traditionally wield a great deal of influence and the city government routinely takes their suggestions into careful consideration.

Citizens of the District of Columbia have no voting representation in Congress. They are represented in the House of Representatives by a non-voting delegate, Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-D.C. At-Large), who may sit on committees, participate in debate, and introduce legislation, but cannot vote on the House floor. D.C. has no representation in the United States Senate. Unlike residents of U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico or Guam, which also have non-voting delegates, citizens of the District of Columbia are subject to all U.S. federal taxes. In the financial year 2007, D.C. residents and businesses paid $20.4 billion in federal taxes; more than the taxes collected from 19 states and the highest federal taxes per capital.

Transportation

The Washington Metropolitan Area is often cited as having some of the nation's worst traffic and congestion. In 2007, Washington commuters spent 60 hours a year in traffic delays, which tied for having the worst traffic in the country after Los Angeles. However, 37.7% of Washington commuters take public transportation to work, also the second-highest rate in the country.

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) operates the city's rapid transit system, Metrorail (most often referred to as the Metro), as well as Metrobus. The subway and bus systems serve both the District of Columbia and the immediate Maryland and Virginia suburbs. Metrorail opened on March 27, 1976 and presently consists of 86 stations and 171.1 km of track.

ABOUT WASHINGTON D.C.

By 1790, the Southern states had largely repaid their overseas debts from the Revolutionary War. The Northern states had not, and wanted the new federal government to take over their outstanding liabilities. As this would effectively mean that the Southern states would assume a share of the Northern debt, in return, the South lobbied for a

federal capital located closer to their own agricultural and slave-holding interests.

The terms "territory" and "district" were used interchangeably throughout the 19th century until the territory was officially renamed the District of Columbia in 1871.

Who am I?

As an Enterprise Architect, I can draw on more than 18 years of professional experience related to the application of Information Technology in Business. In 1992 - after a free-lance start at the VUB (Free University of Brussels) – I initiated a creative business venture, supplying business services and network solutions to smaller organizations in and near Antwerp (harbour) and Brussels. From 1994 to 1999 this company steadily grew by building and operating information applications and networks for mid-size organisations, including merchants based in London, where I lived and worked for 3 years. Within the Business area, I thus became thoroughly acquainted with Business Intelligence, Customer Relationship Management, Project & Service Automation, Supply Chain, Store Systems and Customized Back-Office Applications. In 1999 I sold my participation, to perform as a Consultant for a well-established multi-national organization, where I accumulated extensive hands-on experience pertaining to project and financial management and administration, in addition to the analysis, design, development and deployment of on-line transactional and analytical systems. In the Technology field, I primarily remained focused on the Microsoft .NET platform, development with Project Server, Visual Studio .Net and Team System (Software Factory), BizTalk (Messaging and Business Process Integration) and SQL (Relational Databases). My ultimate career objective at TOBIUS is to become ever better at IT Project Management, Architecture and Solution Design, in order to build and integrate complex but secure, scalable and maintainable systems in multi-cultural environments.

Before joining Microsoft I have been working in local and EMEA jobs in IT distribution. Music was my first love (occasionally you can spot me twisting knobs and spinning wheels as a deejay, or making lots of noise in a rock band), but I happily share this love with my wife and 2 great little daughters, Charlotte and Marie. The sports pages in my diary are few, but I go scuba diving every once in a while and keep up swimming: an excellent pastime for clearing my head of everyday’s busy business.

Who am I?

After growing up in a small village in the heart of “Haspengouw” I studiedengineering in Louvain and afterwards a master at Vlerick Management School. My first working experience was at Sabena Technics, INCAT and LUON and I joined Microsoft almost 5 years ago as Mid Market Marketing Manager.

For 2 years now, I am responsible for the Partner Strategy & Programs division within Microsoft Belgium & Luxembourg where our main challenge is threefold:1. Optimizing the way we communicate with our partners to give them the information they need to do business2. Offer our partners’ resources the right training programs so they are better equipped to do business3. Engage with our partners in campaigns so we can trigger customers together to evaluate and purchase our solutions.

Of course to accomplish all of this, a good team is essential. Therefore I get the support from Lien Deleenheer, Imma Verheyen and Ann De Bisschop doing everything possible to realize these goals.

Personally I am married and have a beautiful son of 1,5 year doing his best to keep his parents busy. I also enjoy playing music, photography, my motorbike and renovating our house.

Why do I attend WPC?

I believe the WPC is the only place where we can offer our partners this degree of insight about our strategy, solutions and future vision. The Partner Conference is the perfect place to hear in avant-première the Microsoft focus areas for the next fiscal year. It also allows you to sit down with your partner(s) and talk about these focus areas and how to translate it into a business plan for the next fiscal year. It is also the perfect place to enable networking amongst partners and discover relationships that may help them do business in areas where they don't have the expertise themselves.

Who am I?

Hi, I am 28 years old and a proud father of a 2 year old son and 5 months old daughter. When I'm not working I love to spend time with my family or to do some sports such as mountainbiking, tennis or running (in preparation for 20km of Brussels). I hate traffic jams and that is why I live in Kortenberg, very near to the Microsoft office. This allows me to spend less time in my car and more time with my family and friends.

Why do I attend WPC?

WPC is always a great learning and networking experience. Next to this I look forward to discover Washington during day and night.

Company Description

I bet you already know it.

Who am I?

In all humility and simplicity, there are some basics that guide me through life:1/ Fly on the wings of your strenghts2/ No words but action3/ Anything can be done

As a consequence, I became a 41-year old father of 3 young kids and own 3 chickens and 2 rabbits. I share my passion between my family, antiques & architecture and sailing on the one hand, and yes, my job indeed on the other hand.

The most beautiful professional challenge I can dream of, is the one of developing the SMB business for Microsoft in the Belux, through an enthusiastic and energetic partner community. Realising my partners’ dreams and plans, is the basis of my personal and professional success and satisfaction. I would love to discuss what we can do together!

Why do I attend WPC?

The WPC is thé place to be for people who want to get early insights into new technology developments and strategies. Every year, I come back from WPC with a bag full of learnings and opportunities, what more can one dream? At WPC, I get most of the energy from talking with the people who are really driving our industry - the Microsoft Partner Community. The most influential and active partners always join!

Who am I?

As I already have 47 years of lovely springs and hard winters behind me, it are my 2 childeren that can call themselves generation Y members.... But it's not age that counts; it's all about how you feel and going to the WPC is certainly a "feel good" experience, whatever generation you're part of. I live in Oud-Heverlee next to Leuven and with my spare time that's left after work and family, I love to do some biking, hiking and gardening together with my wife, Annemie.

Why do I attend WPC?

As Partner Sales Lead, I'm looking forward every year to the WPC. It's the perfect place to connect with our partners : it's the perfect moment to discuss several topics a bit deeper and longer. But also from a content point of view, I'm looking forward as this year is a very special one : we're all in the cloud : I do expect some pretty exciting messages on partners in the cloud !

Last but not least : having fun, with good company in a nice environment : how can a summer start in a better way ?

Who am I?

Since May 5, 2010 my spare time has got 2 little feet and 10 cute little fingers. My spare time grows every day… :-)

Why do I attend WPC?

Connection and commitment are the two main drivers in my way of working as partner account manager. Connection enables me to better understand the priorities and strategy of my accounts, and brings the plans of Microsoft and the partner in synch. What's more a personal connection makes the ‘second-5-minutes’possible. A deep commitment is the other qualifier of a strong partnership. Establishing mutual commitment to grow business, to co-engage and to drive customer satisfaction is an everyday focus.

And guess what? The World Partner Conference is one of the best places to invest further in these fundaments. My partners and I can hear which commitment Microsoft will show and how to deal with it, and I believe that we will be connected in one way or another… at the end of the trip.
