In WP3 it is planned to scale up, design and engineer a 20 MWth field CCL pilot plant for CO2 separation from power plants with limestone, based on results from preceding WP1 and 2
Motivation – Why do we do it?
Construction of a pilot plant in the order of 20 MWth is a logical next step in the development and scale-up of this technology
3
WP3 “SCALE-UP AND ENGINEERING FOR A 20 MWth CCL PILOT PLANT”
• Definition of the CCL technology process configuration for a 20 MWth pilot plant, based on the location of the host facility. Site selected as host for this study is the 600 MWe Emile Huchet coal-fired power plant operated by Uniper in France.
• Design and engineering of the components of the 20 MWth pilot plant concluding in a CAPEX and OPEX cost estimation
• Investigation of Balance of Plant and evaluation of the permitting process for erection and operation of the pilot plant
• Definition of a detailed plan for operation and logistics
• HSE and technical risk assessment for the CCL pilot will be jointly conducted
5
WP3 “SCALE-UP AND ENGINEERING FOR A 20 MWth CCL PILOT PLANT”
– Defined two hard-coals representing expected coal range (El Cerrejon as design coal and Pittsburg No. 8 as high sulfur coal)
– Fixed CO2 Product quality (EOR specification) & CO2 Product logistics (back to stack)
– Fixed calculation basics (e.g. plant life time, operating time, etc)
• Process concept & configuration / Process Flow Diagram (PFD): Draft PFD developed and screened, depicting the process configuration and control loops
• Host site visited; planned plot area and integration/tie-in locations established
13
WP3 “SCALE-UP AND ENGINEERING FOR A 20 MWth CCL PILOT PLANT”
• Process concept will be finalized and H&MB generation for scaled-up pilot will be done after test results from test campaign #1 are evaluated in WP1 and process models developed have been successfully validated in WP2 against test data.
• Core engineering tasks of WP3 like equipment design, preparation of P&ID, etc. will be started after finalization of H&MB.
• All activities are planned to be started according to overall project schedule with majority of engineering activities expected to start in May 2016.
