From the Principal Term 3 Week 6

It really feels like Spring already. The weather has been so warm and sunny and it was great to be out in it over the weekend. As the days are gettingwarmer our students are finding they don’t need their jackets and jumpers as much. Sometimes it is still cool in the mornings and there is a need to wear ajacket or jumper for a while until the sun warms us up. So when our students do warm up they are discarding these items of clothing but, unfortunately,forgetting to retrieve them and leaving them around the school grounds or in other classrooms. At the end of last week I checked the lost property. Oh mygoodness, what a lot there was! New jackets, hats, and jumpers and not many of them named. At least up to 70 items of clothing. Please go and have a lookand see if they belong to your children. We know they cost a lot of money to replace.

Kindergarten Information Evening

We had a successful information evening last Wednesday night 14th August, for parents who have Kindergarten children starting at our school in 2014.Thenight was to give parents information about our school and what wonderful programs and educational opportunities their child will receive here at WoyWoy Public School. The Kindergarten orientation process will continue this term and into next term. The program is outlined for you below.

Session 1 Wednesday 11th September, 9.15am - 10.30amSession 2 Wednesday 18th September, 9.15am - 10.30amSession 3 Wednesday 30th October, 9.15am - 10.30amSession 4 Wednesday 6th November, 9.15am - 10.30am

There will be a Parent Orientation session on September 11, from 9.15am -10.30am, at the time of the first student session, in the hall. During this session,parents will be provided with information about starting Kindergarten, the Kindergarten Curriculum and other important Kindergarten information.

Year 3 Maritime Museum

Year 3 students had a big day out at Darling Harbour in Sydney when they visited the Maritime Museum last Thursday 15th August. A big thank you goesto the teachers who organised the excursion and supported the students on their trip. I hear it was a great day.

Year 4 Jenolan Caves

Our Year 4 students had a wonderful time travelling out to Bathurst last Thursday and Friday. They stopped at the Blue Mountains and Jenolan Caves aftervisiting the Mount Piper Power Station and staying overnight at The Bathurst Sheep and Cattle dome. A very exciting trip. The weather in Bathurst was abit on the chilly side but our students had lots of fun. Thank you to the organising teachers and helpers. It is fantastic that our school can provide these extracurricula adventures enhancing our student’s learning around their Human Society and Its Environment (HSIE) units of work.

Girls' Soccer Tream Wins!

Congratulations to our girls' soccer team which is now in the final (round 5) of the Central Coast area, making them one of 32 teams left in the competition

in the state. The girls have defeated Woy Woy South, Umina, Empire Bay and Wamberal Public Schools to make the final round. A big thank you to MrGraham for his committment and time given to train and coach the girls' team. Well done girls and best of luck for the round 5 game.

Senior Gala Day

Last Friday Year 5 and 6 had a fun filled day full of sporting activities. This was the Senior Gala day. The sporting activities took place in different sportingfield locations. All of our students enjoyed their day, representing our school well with impeccable behaviour. Well done everyone!

Parent’s Coffee Hour

Thank you to all the parents who attended the Parent Coffee hour over the last 2 weeks. It runs every week on Tuesday afternoons from 1:30pm in theSchool As Community Centre building near the boundary of Bowden Road. Coffee and tea are provided and babysitting for your babies and toddlers isfree. All you need to do is come and, if you wish, bring a plate of something to share. Come and meet some other parents, have an hour to relax and get toknow one another. All welcome!

It is Book Week

We are celebrating Book Week this week. The theme is “Reading across the universe”. A flyer outlining our activities for the week was sent home withevery child last week. On Wednesday we have our assembly and our students can come dressed as their favourite book character. A Book Fair will run inthe school Library for the week. This will be a great opportunity to get some early Christmas or birthday presents or some interesting books for you and thechildren to read. You are very welcome to attend the assembly on Wednesday morning.

New Walking Path

A huge thank you to Macca for laying the new path from Bowden Road over to the covered walkway near the K block classrooms. A huge thank you also tothe Colwell family for their kind and generous donation of the paving bricks. This will ensure everyone a comfortable, dry walk into the grounds and itlooks great too!

Library News

Read Across the Universe! Book Week is during week 6 this term. The assembly and parade will be at 10:00am on Wednesday the 21st August. Parents areinvited to watch. Students are encouraged to dress up as a book character or dress to the theme of read across the universe. Closed in shoes must be worn.School hats are still required for play at lunch and recess. Competition winners will be announced at the assembly.

The Book Fair will be open in the school library each day this week from 8.30am -8.50am, during the second half of the lunch break and after school until3.20pm. We are able to accept cash payment only.

The Premier’s Reading Challenge will need to be finalised by the 28th August. Please see me if you have any questions regarding this. Currently everystudent in Early Stage 1 and Stage 1 has completed the challenge and will receive a certificate.

The library blog is due to be available by the end of this week!

Fathers' Day BBQ Breakfast

To help celebrate Father’s Day, Year 6 will be hosting a BBQ breakfast on Friday 30th August from 7.00am to 8.45am underneath the COLA. All arewelcome to attend, especially dads, grandfathers, uncles (and mums too). If the family is unable to attend, please feel free to send the children to schoolearly with money to enjoy a warm breakfast as all items will be sold on the day. See attached flyer for more details. Jenolan/Bathurst Excursion

Year 4 travelled to Bathurst /Jenolan Caves last week for our over-night excursion. We followed the journey of the Early Explorers, Blaxland, Wentworth& Lawson. Wow what a great trip we had!

On the first day we toured the Mount Piper Power Station and tested our bravery, as we ended up walking along the very top of the towers that were over200’ high. It was nice to see some students supporting others who were a little afraid of the heights! We learned how electricity is made and we all got topick up some coal off the ground to take home as a souvenir.

Next we did a lap of the Mount Panorama Race Track, trying to imagine what it would be like travelling at 200-300km per hour! We then arrived at‘Heritage Park’ a huge sheep and cattle farm where we stayed for the night.

At the farm, we went on a tractor ride and petted some animals in the nursery, including emus and big pigs. Eww they were very scratchy and smelly! Wethen had a show where we learned about sheep, cattle, donkeys and goats. We even saw a sheep being shorn! Later that night, we had a bush dance and hadlots of fun learning new dances.

The next morning, there was 5cm of frost on the ground that looked like snow. It was freezing! We were glad to get on the bus again as we headed off toJenolan Caves.

The bus trip to the caves was really scary! The roads are very skinny and the bus driver has to be careful not to go over the edge! When we arrived at thecaves we went through a huge stone archway in the bus. We were so excited!

The leaders split us into 2 groups. We ventured into the ‘Chifley’ cave which was named after a previous prime minister. The caves were amazing! We sawbeautiful stalagmites and stalactites, coloured lights shining on the crystal deposits and huge caverns that were made by water gushing through the rocks.After the tour, it was time to head back towards home. Katoomba here we come!

Our last stop was Scenic World at Katoomba. We learnt about the coal mine that used to be there. The miners used to get to the bottom of the valley in avery steep cable car. They used to mine the coal and then transport it in huge buckets to the top using the cable car. We got to ride in the carriage to thebottom. How exciting! The rail line was very steep and scary. Most of the kids screamed when we went over the edge! We then went on a short bushwalkthrough the beautiful forest until we reached our return transport, the cable-car.

The cable-car was a huge see-through carriage that was attached to very strong cables. Everyone stepped inside and held on tight. The car lifted us up andover the forest and headed to the top of the mountain. The view was magnificent as we were up so high!

We did so many fantastic things on our excursion that I can’t choose which part was my favourite. I’m so glad my parents allowed me to go as it is anexperience that I will never forget!

A Reminder to Parents to Notify the School about your Child’s Health

We welcome information from parents about your child's health, even if you are not requesting specific support from our school. Our school asks formedical information when you enrol your child. It is also important that you let us know if your child’s health care needs change or if a new healthcondition develops.

Information about allergies, medical conditions such as asthma and diabetes and other health care related issues (including prior conditions such as medicalprocedures in the last 12 months) should be providedto the school by parents. Please provide this information in writing to the principal. This will greatly assist our school in planning to support your child’shealth and wellbeing.

Please also remember to notify staff in the school office of any changes to your contact details or to the contact details of other people nominated asemergency contacts.

We appreciate your assistance in this regard and assure you that any information you provide the school will be stored securely and will only be used ordisclosed in order to support your son or daughter’s health needs or as otherwise required by law.

Changes in Family Circumstances

As well as updating the school of your child's medical conditions, it is important that we are advised of any changes to your family circumstances. Also,if there are court orders pertaining to your child, the school will need to be advised and a copy provided. As with health information, anything you providethe school will be stored securely and will only be used in order to support your child or as required by law.

These positions are casual/on call.

We are looking for an experienced and energetic person toassist in our school canteen.

Experience and skills in the hospitality industry and/orcanteens are preferred.

Experience in customer service, cash and food handlingrequired.

The successful applicant should be prepared to volunteer atleast one day a fortnight and have some on the job training with our canteen

supervisor.

Canteen Assistant is every Friday (3hrs) and one Tuesday a

term (6hrs), you must be available to be called in any time.

Casual (Back-up) Assistant - Must be available to be called inwhen required if Canteen Assistant is unavailable.
