Dear WAC Members,
I hope you all had a very nice break, and that you got to enjoy the sunshine. At the moment we are experiencing some typical Spring rains, but the Böögg (Switzerland’s answer to the groundhog!) has predicted a long summer, so I’m hoping that the wetness will simply help my garden grow and soon I’ll be outside grilling sausages and picking my veggie bounty!! And I’m especially hoping the sun will shine on the annual WAC BBQ on May 24th, our volunteers have some fun activities planned (however the BBQ will take place rain or shine, see the advert in this issue for more details).
There’s lots going on this month, not just at the WAC, but also in Switzerland. Here are some fun events happening this month:
04 May - Cheese Festival, Gruyerès07 May - May Market in Appenzell (Dorfzentrum)10 May - Historic Steam & Diesel Train rides, Stein-am-Rhein (www.etzwilen-singen.ch)11 May - Cow Fighting (!!) in Nendaz18 May (until Nov) - ‘Family Sundays’ in the Tram Museum, Zürich23 May - Harbor Festival in Rapperswil25-25 May - Wildlife Safari days in the Sihlwald Wild Animal Park

Enjoy the issue and we will see you around the WAC!

Dear Members,
I hope you all had a suitably relaxing Spring Break, the Easter Bunny delivered a dose of chicken pox to our house but we managed to escape to Lugano for a couple of days! Make sure you brace yourselves for all that the WAC has install for you in May, it’s a bumper month!
For all you crafters out there and those that aspire to be (like me), Sue will be hosting the Craft Night on the 7th May from 7.30pm at the WAC. The Book Club, Readers Gone WACky, are also meeting in the clubroom on Wednesday 21st to discuss and dissect The Good Lord Bird by James McBride. New members are always welcome, so don’t be shy. Don’t miss the Paleo themed Potluck Club Night in on 15th May and try out a few new gluten/lactose/grain free recipes. These nights are great for trying out new recipes at home and sampling a selection of delicious food.
We are also excitedly and busily preparing for our Summer BBQ which is being held on Saturday 24th May at Pfadiheim Buech, Herrliberg. Tickets will shortly be available from the 8th in the office -‐ remember they are FREE for members. Don’t forget to sign up to volunteer a little of your time to help with one of the events, your time ensures that everything runs smoothly on the day and everyone gets to enjoy it.
I have my fingers crossed that the weather will be kind, but we have a great indoor space if the elements are against us. Come join us and enjoy a relaxing and entertaining afternoon with friends.
I also want to wish Carol Conzelmann, our new Club Office Manager, “einen guten Start!”. Don’t forget to pop your head in to the office and say “hello!”.
Happy Mother’s Day for the 11th and see you at the BBQ on the 24th!

WAC IS UP IN THE USTER SHOWCASEThanks to Charlotte we are finally up on the official board of the Uster Community next to the post office! It took several trips to the post of our president Clare and her two kids until they were able to give us the good news. Since mid of April we're officially up there - see for yourself!
It's important for us to be included in the Uster showcase. That way we will be seen by everybody looking for what the City has to offer. A great opportunity as well to be noticed by people passing by at such a center point.
Thank you Charlotte for getting us up for the next years, I'm sure your effort will pay out!

Dear Friends,
I’d like to share with you all the good news that Carol Conzelmann has been appointed as our new Club Office Manager. We had a lot of very strong applicants for this posiDon, and I would like to thank all those that applied.
Carol will start her training with Jennifer in the office, and will officially start in the post on Monday 5th May.
We're all thrilled that Jennifer is going to be replaced by a commiHed and dedicated WAC member, who can bring so much knowledge and new ideas to the posiDon.

Dear Friends,
It is with mixed emotions that I leave my position as Club Office Manager. For many of you who may count yourselves among the younger generation of WAC members, this may seem a big change for the WAC, but for us old-timers, I can assure you, it is simply part of the circle of life.
I have been actively involved with the WAC for more than 10 years, and still count among my closest friends many WAC members both past and present. This organization has provided me with the siblings, nieces and and nephews that I had always thought would surround me as a young mother (not so young any more), but as an expat, were an ocean away.
I have so enjoyed my work as the COM, but came to realize that I was seeking new challenges. What, I did not know. It was though blind luck that I was connected to an amazing woman that helped me to sort out what the next chapter of my life might look like.
Amanda Wilby, a certified coach with 10 years of expat experience, called the WAC to ask if anyone might be interested in participating in a trial run of her new Expat360 Life course. I jumped on it! Through the group course as well as follow up 1-on-1 coaching sessions, I was able to say goodbye to limiting beliefs, identify my real values (not the ones I thought I should have) and set goals that have me more “fired up” than I have been in 20 years.
It is hard to say goodbye to this job that I have so enjoyed, but at the same time, I am excited to move on to new adventures, and I can sleep well at night, knowing that the WAC is in good hands with our amazing Club Office Manager, Carol Conzelmann, and an energetic new Board of Directors.
Now it’s time for my Oscar acceptance speech. Many, many thanks are due. My personal hero, Ida Imbach with her amazing staff of teachers have created a team with which I was proud to be associated. Liz Weidmann, the unsung brains behind the numbers, has raised our organization to a new level of professionalism, and she’s a fun dinner companion too! To all of the Boards that I have worked under, I say thank you for maintaining an environment of support, not only for our members, but also for our employees. Finally, I would like to thank all of you, WAC members past and present, who have made my time working at the WAC so satisfying.
I am stepping down from the COM position, but you can rest assured that I will not be absent from the WAC. I am looking forward to jumping back into a volunteer role, and enjoying the many activities and events for the Moms (or Mums, if you like).
I wish you all the best in this Spring season, and look forward to seeing you “around.”
All my love and gratitude,
Jennifer
With Thanks
Volume 19 , Issue 2 May 2014On the 5th April we held our first ever Spring Fest at the WAC!
We had a super day full of colour, cakes and crafty creations! We had great turnout with a lot of younger guests participating in our Easter Bonnet parade- each child had brought in their own handmade
Easter/Spring themed hat.
For the Under 5's Category, Vitoria was named the winner of best themed hat, and for the over 5's, Anais! So a big well done to you both!
The bake sale (another WAC first) raised over 170chf- all the proceeds covering the costs of the event with any remaining funds being put in to the kitty for the next big WAC event!
A big thank you to all those that gave their time to help run the event, to those that donated cakes and biscuits and of course to the buyers and those that joined us for the afternoon!
We look forward to seeing you next at our annual WAC BBQ!

Readers Gone WACkyAlice Knoepfel
More girls have been ki!ed in the last fi"y years, precisely because they were girls, than men were ki!ed in a! the wars of the
twentieth century.
In April the Readers Gone WACky read Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide by Nicholas D. Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn. The authors break down a seemingly overwhelming topic into manageable themes. Each issue is illustrated with a personal story and the steps taken to come out on the other side. It is not exhaustive in its scope, limited to the Middle East and Asia and touching on only a handful of problems facing women today. Our readers found the stories wrenching, yet inspirational. The authors are clearly hoping to generate involvement in specific causes, but our readers appreciated their transparency. The authors also discussed failures from well-intentioned yet misguided programs. The most successful programs involved the local community and stressed education—education for both the community and girls. There were a surprising number of small things that could make a huge difference including school uniforms, deworming and iodized salt. We discussed whether or not foreign involvement was Western arrogance, but it is a question also addressed by the authors. In the end while all of us would be happy to donate money to the causes, we remained split on whether or not the book motivated us to become personally involved.
The next Reader Gone WACky group are scheduled for:
May 21&& The Good Lord Bird by James McBrideJune 18& tbd
Meetings are held on Wednesday evenings at 8 PM at the WAC with a rotating leader. New readers are very welcome. Please call or e-mail Alice Knöpfel for more information (044 912 23 26 [email protected] )&

Are you ready for the next potluck dinner on the 15th May?
The next theme is Paleo, a gluten/grain/dairy free culinary experience & adventure!
Many people have asked me before, “what do you ACTUALLY eat?!” And there answer is LOADS!

dietary restrictions.
There is a whole world of food available to you and I can promise, it's not all about salad!

Lemon-Garlic Shrimp with Zucchini Noodles
What you need:
2 medium zucchini (about 2 1/2 cups noodles)12-15 large shrimp, peeled and deveined (about 1/2 lb)1/2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil (or melted ghee)1-3 garlic cloves, crushed or grated (I use 3)1 tbsp minced fresh parsleyZest from 1/2 lemonJuice from 1/2 lemon (about 1 tbsp)pinch salt and pepper (optional to taste)1/2 - 1 tbsp ghee (or butter) (I use 1 tbsp)1 1/2 - 2 cups baby spinach
How to make:
Defrost, peel, and devein the shrimp if needed. Crush or grate garlic with a zester/grater. Mix together olive oil, garlic, lemon juice, zest, parsley, and salt and pepper and marinate for about 20-30 minutes. Make noodles from zucchini using a julienne peeler or spiral slicer (or cut into thin strips). Place noodles in a strainer or colander. Sprinkle noodles with salt, toss and let sit for 10-20 minutes to release liquid. (Skip this step if you don't plan to cook your zucchini.)
Drain water from zucchini and pat dry with paper towels (I squeeze water out gently.). Heat ghee over medium heat (have all your ingredients ready to go). Add shrimp (with the marinade) and cook for about 30 seconds. Flip the shrimp, cook for another 30 seconds, then add the zucchini
noodles. Toss a few times to coat. Add spinach and basil, continue tossing gently and let cook for a minute or two or until noodles are cooked to preference and shrimp is cooked through. Add salt and pepper to taste and squeeze on some extra lemon juice if needed (I squeeze on the other other lemon half.). Garnish with basil and lemon zest if desired.
*Don't cook for too long after adding noodles or shrimp will be overcooked. If you prefer softer noodles, cook shrimp for about a minute on each side, remove from pan. Then add noodles until soft and toss with shrimp.

The Girls Club Visits Kulturama
To earn their science badge, the Girls Club’s April activity was
held at Kulturama, a small museum in Zurich a few blocks
behind Stadelhofen. Somehow this little gem was largely
unknown to many of us parents. While only a few floors, in
typical Swiss fashion, it is extremely well done. We learned
about the human body, from the five senses to a closer look at
our skeleton and how it compares to other animals. Another
floor presented a basic timeline from dinosaurs through the
evolution of man. In the attic, the kids were able to put their
new knowledge to use with a hands-on area that included
everything from x-rays to animal pelts.
We finished off the day at a nearby park where the girls
thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful weather and made the most of
it by rolling down the grassy hill.
I continue to be impressed with my husband Dave’s ability to
teach children and keep their attention. Thank you so much
and thanks to all the other parents who helped out.

Volume 19 , Issue 2 May 2014Library News Laura Horlacher
Hello WAC Members, I'd like to introduce myself. My name is Laura Horlacher and I am your new WAC Head Librarian. Before I tell you about what is new at the Library, I'd like to thank Jessica for her valuable work as Head Librarian this last year. I hope to follow well in her footsteps in maintaining and renewing our club's library. Now on to news from the library. --Our reservation system is up. If you want to reserve a book or DVD, let a librarian know and you will be contacted by e-mail or personally as soon as the item you reserved is there. --On the Club's bulletin board and on the library door, we post the names and descriptions of the films we have and what is coming. Come by and check out what we are adding to our DVD collection.--We also have a "survey" posted down in the library and outside on the library door. This survey lists the movies which we are thinking of purchasing. If you haven't seen this survey, drop down and look at it. (It will always be changing as we weigh the results, purchase movies, and post new purchase ideas). If you would like to rent a movie from us in the future, you can help by writing your name down by the movie titles you want to rent. This way we know if the movie interests enough members for the library to offer it. New suggestions are also welcome!!
We are also looking to improve our book collection. Do you know of any particularly good easy readers or children's fiction or non-fiction books? Send us your suggestions. Thanks and hope to see you soon in our library.

Dear WAC members,
I would like to welcome the new Library Chair, Laura Horlacher. She has agreed to take on the responsibilities of running our beloved library. She is very enthusiastic and on the ball. I am confident she will do a magnificent job. I can already see, in the short time she has been in charge, some great improvements. Laura, we are looking forward to a stellar year and I am looking forward to working for you as a volunteer.

Explanation on the change in the WAC Handbook
Article 5. LIABILITY
Original text:
Members are to note that they participate in any Club or activity entirely at their own risk. Neither the Club nor the Board of Directors shall be held responsible for any injury, damage or loss incurred by the general members, while participating in any Club activity or function. The liability of each individual member of the Club to any third party is limited to the membership dues, see fee schedule under Article 2. Finance. Section 1. Membership Dues and Income. (Swiss Civil Code, Article 71).
Change to: (add a sentence)
WAC is responsible to keep the club/school facilities in a safe condition.
Explanation of the change:
1. As an organization WAC has to take certain responsibility whether we write it or not.
2. To keep the facilities safe is the basic responsibility WAC has to take.
3. After changing our Handbook will look friendlier and fair.
4. WAC is the legal face of our organization. School is part of WAC. WAC as an organization has to take the responsibility, not any individual person.
-Sima
Dear WAC Members: In April, a vote was put before the membership to change the wording in the WAC Handbook. This measure was not passed. In order to inform our members, our Vice-President, Sima, has offered a better explanation of the need for new wording. We hope this clarifies the measure and will help when the measure is again on the ballot.
