Good communication between the board

members and the membership of the WAC is

important for the continued growth and

improvement of the club. If you have any

concerns or questions, please feel free to contact

Dear Reader,

This past month I have been somewhat fighting to keep my

head above the water. Our youngest, Verity, having stopped attending WAC Explorers and having four afternoons per

week free (which she calls literally her mummy's afternoons),

has meant commitment to the family; with my exercise regime

and other aspects of life taking "second fiddle". On top of this,

I find myself chronically late wherever I go - never a good

thing when you try to cram in as much to life as possible. My

recent tardiness now have materialised into 2 rather

expensive speeding fines, have you noticed how, in the last

month Uster is now a mine field of Speeding Cameras?

Beware !

Enough about me and traffic and now to this edition. Judging

by our cover, some of us WAC "girls" attended the Pink

Ribbon Race once again. Sharon Whartman starts her new

column p6, a massive amount of volunteers are needed for

our traditional Halloween party and the WAC would like to

start again Drama course p.9 . Finally, check the findings from

the Expat Spouse interviews made before the Summer p. 19-

20.

Happy Reading.

President’s NotePresident’s Note Carol ConzelmannCarol Conzelmann

Dear fellow WAC members,

As I‟m writing this note, it‟s looking positively autumnal outside my window, as the leaves start to turn

golden, with fresh snow on the Alps, and a cool nip in the air. Just 3 days ago I was at the Badi enjoying

some late summer sun – the weather changes fast here! But one of the joys of living in Switzerland is

watching the seasons change and looking forward to something new – in this case, pumpkin soup,

pumpkin carving and, you‟ve guessed it, Halloween! One of the WAC‟s favorite special events is just

around the corner – our annual spooky Halloween party including the famous „Trunk or Treating‟ – if

you‟ve never been before, you just have to come along and see what it‟s all about. Our Special Events

team Swapna and Natalie, assisted by Heike and WAC experts Nilsa and Ana, are busy getting every-

thing scarily ready - don‟t forget to pick up your tickets before they‟re all spirited away!

One of the areas the WAC board is looking at is to find ways to say thank you to our many loyal WAC

volunteers. Without our volunteers, our club wouldn‟t exist. I feel very proud and honored to be the

current President of the club, which plays such an important role in the lives of many of our members.

For me, the various volunteer jobs I‟ve done at the WAC over the past 3 years have enriched my life

no end. I missed my full time job when I came to Switzerland, but „working‟ at the WAC, be it sparing

an hour to cover a library shift, editing the

WAC on Track, running a playgroup or be-

ing on the Board gives me a purpose beyond

the unpaid full time job of being a mom. It‟s

also great fun – the WAC is such a lovely

place to be, to chat informally to people

from all corners of the world and from all

walks of life. As a volunteer you get to be

part of a team, learn some new skills and

brush up on some old ones. So in many

ways the job of volunteering is its own re-

ward – try it and see! And if you have any

ideas as to how we can encourage the spirit

of volunteerism within the club, please do let us know- we‟re always on the lookout for new ideas!

We are in urgent need of volunteers right now to run our playgroups, on Tuesday afternoons and Fri-

day mornings. For moms with pre-school kids, especially those new to Switzerland, our playgroups are

so important, providing some time to relax whilst the children play, and the chance to make some new

friends. Running a playgroup is not difficult; it only needs some energy and a couple of hours of your

time. If you think you could take on the challenge, or would be interested in co-hosting a group, please

contact our Playgroup Chairperson Danna at [email protected]

Until next month,

We have just had another successful Parent

Information Evening! It was so nice to see so many

Dads attending this year!

We started the evening with a short talk by Carol

about the WAC and the introduction of her board

members and we ended it with a scrumptious apero

prepared by April. My team and I would like to

thank the board for their support this evening!

I was given the floor to introduce the wonderful,

dedicated women who are the „backbone‟ of the

school – your children‟s teachers. To my teaching

team – Mahjabeen, Heather, Sangeeta, Caryn, Kathy,

Yvonne, Kate, Bettina, Stephanie – thank you! To

complete our team we have Sharon, our lunch club

lady and Jennifer, our Club office manager. These

two ladies are a very important part of the team

that makes the school and the club a great place to

be!

Lastly, I would like to thank all the families whose

children come to our school. Your support is

invaluable to us!

The PTA (Parents Teachers Association) has been

instrumental in helping the school and the teachers

in all their needs – from making playdough to

organizing class photos. The PTA is comprised of

the class reps and our new leader – Kristina

Linkomo. If there is anyone who is willing to help

out as a class rep or just for a task, please contact

either of us.

Kristina - [email protected] or Ida -

For those of you who couldn‟t make it, the teachers

and I are always available to answer your questions.

We are here for you and your children!

So, we wish you a nice Fall Break and see you next

month!

SHARON„S TIPS FOR EXPAT Sharon Whartmann

Having lived in Switzerland for more then 20 years, I thought I could pass on some tips to the many Expat

families at the WAC once in a while – things that I have experienced or found out the hard way – to make

your life a little easier.

When you sign up for health insurance, dental work is usually excluded. As you may be aware, dentist

prices in Switzerland are astronomical and can quickly run into thousands, and more. BIG GULP!!!

However, the younger your child is, the less likely your health insurance will ask for a dental pre-check

for your child to be approved for coverage.

Since both my husband and I needed orthodontic intervention as children, our girls will likely need to

see an orthodontist at some stage too. With our particular health insurance, Swica, a child up to the

age of 4 does not need a pre-check to be approved for dental coverage. We pay Fr. 20.- per month

per child, and the coverage is +/- 75%, with some small print.

My tip: don‟t wait until your child is older to inquire with your health insurance about dental coverage.

It is worth it, and much easier, to sign your child up whilst they are young and there are no foreseen

dental problems. Ask your health insurance for their rules and coverage for dentistry for children, and

be specific to also ask about orthodontic coverage.

Keep smiling

Celebrate, Integrate, not Isolate

Our first meeting took place on Sept 10th

2011. We were 14 girls strong with more in-

quiring already. Jana Parkin, Maria Frost and

I, Nilsa Stettler were blessed with many

smiling faces, laughter, song and crafting

hands. We have two groups again this year,

the 5-7 year olds called the Dolphins and the

Diamonds which are now the 8-10 year olds.

A preteen group for 11-12+ year olds has not

thus far formed. Our teen group the Stars

graduated. We wish them much success in

their studies and joy in their teen years.

Good Luck: Denia, Vivienne, Sara, Bridget and Genevieve!

The goals of the Girls Club are to provide our

daughters with an English speaking opportu-

nity to learn about their community, their

personal health, and their talents (among

other things) all while building strong friend-

ships and interpersonal skills. We work to

expose your daughters to strong female role

models. In addition to you parents, we hope

that your daughters will count us among their

friends and know that we are there for

them. It does after all "take a village to

raise a child", meaning one can't do it alone

and surrounding yourself and your child with

people who care about them will help to en-

sure a happy, healthy child ready to face her

future.

Our meeting dates are:

In 2011:Oct. 1, Nov 12th, Dec 3rd

In 2012: Jan 14th, Feb. no mtg, Mar 10th,

Apr 14th, May 12th, June 16th

Meetings are usually at the WAC.

Fees: 6 SFr for members, 12 SFR for non-

members of the WAC

READERS GONE WACky Alice Knöpfel

The Readers Gone WACky read Barbara

Kingsolver’s The Lacuna for the September

meeting. Members were entranced by this

novel which follows Harrison William Shep-

herd, from 1929 to 1951. The book opens with

Harrison and his dramatic husband-chasing

mother in Isla Pixol, where he risks taking a

dive into an underwater cave, and emerges in

a secret place. He begins writing in a note-

book to record his experiences and this note-

book becomes an important thread in his live,

and in the novel.

After breaking free from his mother, Harrison

falls into a job mixing plaster for Diego Rivera,

and then progresses to being a cook and typist

for Rivera and his wife, Frida Kahol, and, later,

their houseguest, Leon Trotsky.

Eventually, as the politics of the situation be-

come tricky, Harrison returns to the United

States where he writes novels and is perse-

cuted by the House Un-American Activities

Committee.

Members were pleasantly surprised by the

subject and enjoyed the fascinating rendition of

this particular period in history. In addition, the

readers were drawn to the interesting charac-

terizations of Rivera, Kahlo and Trotsky as well

as the vibrant setting of the novel.

The Readers Gone WACky explored King-

solver’s success as a female author writing in

the voice of a male, gay character. They

speculated that the closedness of the charac-

ter helped Kingsolver create a believable por-

trayal. The group also discussed how she of-

ten writes in various voices within one novel.

One member shared her own experiences in

Mexico and her impressions of the underwater

caves and setting of the novel. Topics also

included the wonderful, dense and poetic lan-

guage of the book, its interesting format and

satisfying ending.

The Readers Gone WACky enthusiastically

recommend this richly imagined historical fic-

tion to other readers.

Next meetings of the Readers Gone WACky

are: October 26 - When the Killing is Done by

T.C. Boyle; November 23 - Cleopatra – A Life

by Stacy Schiff; December 14 - Holiday Cele-

bration and Half Broke Horses by Jeanette

Walls; and January - Unbroken by Laura Hil-

lenbrand. New members are welcome at any

time! Contact Alice Knöpfel for more informa-

tion 044 912 2326 or

[email protected].

The WAC Clubroom and kitchen facilities are available to rent for private parties at very reasonable rates. If you are a WAC member, and would like to use the space, simply contact me at [email protected] for more information.

Goulash meatball.

We were watching Delia's latest advert for

Waitrose : meatball in a goulash sauce. It looked

positively mouth-watering and on the first cold

evening was promptly served to the family with a

standing ovation.

500 g minced beef meat

2 tsp grill seasoning

1 sp of maizena ( cornflour)

a bit of flour to roll the meatball in

1 can of chopped tomatoes

1 onion chopped

2 garlic

1 green pepper cut into 2 cm squares

2 tsp of paprika

creme fraiche.

1. Meatball making.. in a bowl put the minced beef,

the grill seasoning and maizena. Mix it all together

and roll into small ball shape and lightly coat in

flour.. I made about 12 balls .

2. preheat the oven to 160 C

3.In a casserole pour a bit of oil and brown the

meatball. Once browned transfer onto a plate

4. In the same pan, add more oil, add the onion and

cook for 5 minutes. Then add the garlic and paprika

as well as a tsp of flour. Stir. Now pour the can of

tomatoes in the pan, salt to your taste and bring it

to simmer as you keep on stirring.

5. Add the meatball and then put the casserole in

the oven for 3/4 of an hour, at this point add the

green pepper, stir again and let the closed lid

casserole in the over for another 20 minutes. Add

a bit of creme fraiche before serving. Best served

with Fettuccini. Bon appetit
