Good communication between the board

important for the continued growth and
improvement of the club. If you have any

Dear WAC members,
Spring has just drawn upon us as suddenly as the snow has
melted. I love perusing at nature, on the look out for buds,
humming birds, any sign of revival. There is something rather
thrilling at anticipating the rebirth of shrubs, flowers and fun
summer days.
On the theme of revival, our WAC board has just signed up
for another term. A summary of WAC finances and minutes
of the AGM are to be found in the first section.
You might also find in this issue, some good tip as to daily
swisslife. ( parking, BEA, recipe, sport)
As to activities around the WAC, Angela has once again
concocted us a delectable programm, whilst Kadi, our
librarian, has been busy remodelling downstairs in ways that
need to be checked. Finally, let us not forget our girl clubs, as
active as ever, our bookclub and the fantastic program the
LTCS offers over the Spring Break.
You will find this April edition full of zest and impetus that
describes best Spring time & the WAC.
Happy reading

Dear WAC members
Thank you everyone who could make it to the
recent AGM. It was a fun, up-beat evening, which
reflects the fun year we, as a board, have had. The
nominees (mostly current board members) received
a majority vote – thank you for your votes! - we
look forward to serving you 1 more year.
We are thrilled to have a familiar, reliable lady join
our WAC Board. Carol Conzelmann, who used to
be the editor of the WoT, was voted in as the new
Board Secretary. She complements our team well,
and we look forward to working with her this year.
A special thank you to the Nominations
Committee: Jennifer Langkjaer, Angela Watson and
Helen Mylius for heading up and organising the
nominations and voting process. This all has to be
done with precision, following the Verein-laws and
our WAC constitution. Not always an easy task!
Thank you ladies for your hard work.
As the sun shines, and the days are getting longer
and warmer, I wish you all a good warm start to
spring. It is one of my favourite times of the year, as
everything (including myself) seems to come to life;
tulips and daffodils pop up in all their vibrant
colours; crocuses and snowdrops announce the end
of winter. Oh, of course, and not to forget the
chocolate eggs! Ahhhhhhh – it‘s a lovely time!
Happy Easter, and God bless.

2009 Financial Highlights:
One of the boards‘ main targets this year has been to increase membership, with more advertising; mem-
ber welcome breakfasts and fun activities to entice new members.
Teachers salaries have been standardized and adjusted to one rate, instead of up to 4 and we hope to pay
the teachers a small bonus this year.
The BUSPRO system has also been updated so that it now has a standard configuration.
Together with Elke extra budget has been spent on brightening the hallways and clubroom of the WAC.
I have had an enjoyable year working with the WAC Board, and would like to thank Judith Winkelman for her
help.

WAC Annual General Meeting WAC Annual General Meeting Jennifer LangkjaerJennifer Langkjaer
The AGM took place in the WAC Clubroom on March 17th, 2010. In attendance were most of the current
Board of Directors, Committee Chairs and staff members, as well as some long-time members and even one
potential new member. The details of this meeting are available to all members in the AGM Minutes, but we
wanted to bring you the highlights here.
The meeting followed the agenda outlined in the WAC Constitution. Our President, Sharon Warthmann,
opened with an amusing story, which set a most congenial tone to the meeting. The President‘s report high-
lighted the accomplishments of the year, including the upgrading of our accounting system, the review and
pending renewal of our lease agreement, and the focus on building and involving our membership. Sharon
thanked the current Board Members and Chairpersons, crediting the team for working so well together in
the past year. Because of a potential relocation we will, unfortunately, be losing our Vice President, Sandy
Estrella-Schultz. The remainder of the current Board had agreed to stand for election once again, and she is
looking forward to their continued cooperation on behalf of the WAC.
The Treasurer‘s Report was delivered by Susan Keller and the news was good! This year the WAC is back in the black. It appears that past investments and a renewed focus on membership have really shown the desired
results. Additionally, our expenses have been reduced by 20% from 2008. It is the intention to continue this
momentum into the current year with focus on membership. Additional details of the WAC financial position
are available in the Treasurer‘s Report which will be on file, and available to all members.
The third agenda item was the completion and reporting of the election and voting process for this year. The
Nominations Committee was happy to report that the voting quorum of the membership unanimously
elected the candidates for Board of Directors. All Board Members will be continuing in their positions from
last year, with the exception of Jessica Bachofen who will now be serving as Vice President. The Nominations
Committee is also happy to report that Carol Conzulman agreed to serve in the position of Board Secretary.
The WAC Membership was also asked to vote on two other issues. The first involved the slight increase of
membership fees as well as an option for half year membership. The second proposal asked that members
give sufficient notification to the Club Office Manager if membership will not be renewed. Both items were
approved by a clear majority of the voting members.
The final agenda item, preliminary planning for the coming year, opened a lively discussion among those pre-
sent. Each of the Board Members as well as the incoming appointed Committee Chairs took a few moments
to discuss her vision for the year. There are a lot of exciting ideas and opportunities for this year!
The meeting was closed and the assembled group was treated to drinks, snacks and chat. All in all a successful
and enjoyable evening. I know that I am not alone in thanking all of our Board Members, Committee Chairs
and volunteers as well as our outstanding staff for a fantastic WAC Year.
See you all at the next AGM!

The Diamonds:
The weather pattern of sunny
weekdays and rain for the week-
ends seemed set for our March meeting.
However, with the official first day of
spring close to our meeting, we hiked un-
daunted to the forest. Jana Parkin* has
joined us as a Girls Club facilitator. We
marched our way up, found our favorite spot
and with Jana’s help reviewed and once again
built a fire. The fun started as we learned
campfire songs: The Old Duke of York, Prin-
cess Pat and the Bear Song. Of course, our
forest experience always includes climbing
the sideways tree.
It seems we have been on holiday most of
Feb/Mar and now again in April. It seemed
natural to examined the theme of holidays?
What are holidays? How do we celebrate
them?
Peasant life, contrary to belief, was not a
life of toiling in the fields for 14-16 hours a
day. Their days of work centered around the
seasons and available light. Work averaged
about 5-6 hours a day, 4 days a week. Indus-
trialization increased the workday to 10-12
hour days. Today the work days depend on
where you live. Originally, the word Holiday
comes from the Middle English word Häligday
meaning Holy Day. A special day set aside to
commemorate an event or person. What holi-
days have in common are special meals, peo-
ple coming together over a day or days, they
remind us of our common bonds. Each girl
presented a Holiday, its meaning and how her
family celebrates it. We learned about Pass-
over, Christmas in Sweden, England and in
Switzerland with Sami Claus, Easter,
Mother’s Day celebrated now in 85 coun-
tries, Thanksgiving and Grandparent’s Day.
The snack was a special treat because it in-
cluded a taste of Jewish foods for Passover;
thank you Jennifer Langkjaer!

RECIPE Nancy Dodds
Baerlauch rissotto:
You probably have seen and smell them
around whilst walking along the Greifensee.
Bärlauch, or wild garlic, exemplify best early
spring. The lushness of its leaves, or the
fact that they are full of antioxidant makes
them a staple favourite in our household
whenever they are in season. You can
attempt to scavenge your own, but beware as
poisonous Lily of the Valley resembles it.
Alternatively, you can buy them from your
local Migros... When I get a chance, I take
the kids for a nice Spring walk around the
Pfäffikersee and buy some at the
Seegraben's farm shop. They tend to be
more fragrant than the Migros one.
1 onion
350 risotto rice
1 litre chicken stock
100 ml dry white wine
a big handful of Baerlauch
25 g parmesan, grated
a tbsp of butter
salt and pepper
In a saucepan heat butter and then add onion
till soft, bt 5 minutes. Tip in the rice, stir
well till coated with butter, pour in the wine
and stir in. Next add some stock, cook until it
has been absorbed, stirring constantly. Add
another ladle and stir, repeat till the liquid
has thickened and your rice is al dente. That
should take you about 15-20 min in medium
heat. When the risotto is cooked, stir in the
Baerlauch, parmesan and butter. Season,
cover and rest for a few minutes. Spoon in
some bowl. et voila, bon appetit.
P.S. we would love to receive new recipe
contributions... especially seasonal one. just
send it to [email protected] and it will be
published.

BEA?
Have you ever noticed BEA points on the packaging of some of your household purchases
and wondered what they are? When I asked my Swiss neighbour where she got the
garden badminton set from, she explained what BEA was all about.
You simply collect the BEA stickers which you will find on products such as PERSIL
washing powder, EMMI dairy products or VOLG own products. This list of products can
be found on http://www.bea-verlag.ch/bea/punkte.aspx. Then you go to their online shop
to see what you would like to purchase, complete the order form and send this off with
your BEA points.
Their online shop has a variety of children’s games and toys as well as household
products. You purchase with a combination of BEA points and cash (a payment slip will
come with the delivery).
My boys and I really enjoy playing badminton in our garden – the set includes a wide net
on 2 stands, 4 rackets, shuttlecocks – and we paid Fr. 28 with 500 BEA points.

Welcome Spring!!
Spring at the LTCSchool is a happy, busy time.
We have had our class photos taken and picture
sales will be before our Spring Break. The
proceeds of our pictures will go to our PTA
fund which is used for the improvement and
support of the school. Last year’s proceeds
went to buying much needed electric fans.
We will also have our spring vacation program
from April 26-30. There are still spaces left so
please sign up if you’re interested.
A very important part of Spring is finalizing our enrollment plans for next
school year. As part of the School Improvement Program. The teachers and
I review possible ways to improve our curriculum. Two years ago, we changed
our Pre School structure which proved a success. This year we are looking into
our afternoon classes. I can say now that there will be changes and as soon as
we have finalized them, we will have an information evening. Please have a look
at our bulletin board for further details. A letter will also be given out to all
the children.
After the spring break, we will have our parent- teacher conferences. The
sign up sheets will be posted by the classrooms for those interested.
Lastly, the teachers and I would like to thank the PTA board, the Parent reps
and all our lovely parents who have volunteered and are always very
supportive. We really appreciate it!

LIBRARY NEWS Kadi Heinloo
It looks like spring is finally here. With the
return of warmth, sunshine, fresh flowers, and all
that goes along, you probably try to spend as
much time outside , gardening or hiking. Just don't
forget that a book can keep you as good a com-
pany on sunny day as on a long wintery night.
What could be better, after a hard day's work,
than to sit outside and catch the last sun ray with
a good book in your lap? (the obvious answer is
chocolate, how about combining them!) Here's
where our library comes in handy. As to the rainy
evenings, we have a wide and ever-expanding se-
lection of DVDs.
Our most recent DVDs acquisitions are, the romantic comedies Yes Man with Jim Carrey,;
The Proposal with Ryan Reynolds and Sandra
Bullock,. As to new children‘s DVDs , we acquired
a wide range from adventures of Barney, Winnie
the Pooh to classic fairy tales such as Cinderella
and Snow White as well as wonderful animals in
Macdonald's Farm.
As for the library, we have yet another inno-
vation. There is now a small table and some chairs
with puzzles, pencils, crayons, paper and coloring
sheets. These are here to keep children enter-
tained whilst their parents browse through our
selection in peace. Also remember that your chil-
dren are welcome at the library whenever they
have to wait around at the WAC for their parents
or siblings. You don't always have to borrow
something, we are happy for people to just come
and look around, especially children. It is our be-
lief, that the more a child feel at home in the li-
brary, the greater the chance he/she will familiar-
ize themselves with books.
With this in mind, I am very pleased to an-
nounce that the library will soon start its own
story time. Our two wonderful volunteers: Ana
and Judy are just finalizing the details of it. Story
time will be held sometime on Wednesday after-
noons, so keep your eye out for the posters.
The end of April signifies the beginning of the
spring holidays. Our usual holiday offer 2 DVDs
for the price of 1 will be running starting April
17th. So don't forget to come and stock up, and
while you're already there, also check out our
take-away boxes.

Dear fellow WAC members,
Firstly, I would like to say a big 'THANK YOU" to Elke Leser. As my predecessor, she has
done a great job as Interior / Exterior chairperson. This entails improving and maintaining
the facilities that all members can make use of.
Now it's my turn!!! I hope I can continue to provide such an efficient and practical service
to the WAC.
Secondly, for those that don't know me, let me introduce myself a little better. I am
Spanish born but very "Anglosized" after living in the UK for over 15 years and being
married to a Brit. I have two children born and raised here in Switzerland. We have been
members of the WAC for 7 years now. My children having greatly benifitted from
attending some pre-school activities and currently the reading and writing classes.
I feel now that the time is right for me to "give a little back".

Parking at the WAC
Very recently, parking fines
were being dished out in our
WAC parking area. Please remember that the
parking area is public, and requires a payment.
A recent article in K-Tipp, the leading Swiss
consumer magazine, reports how: Somewhere in
Zurich person ―A‖ paid for 2 hours parking in
the number 1 parking space. A short while later,
person ―B‖ parked in space number 4, but by
error paid for 30 minutes into number 1 instead
of number 4.
When person A returned after 2 hours, there
was a parking fine on his car windshield. He
pulled out the parking receipt which he had
kept, and noted that everything was correct,
and that he had in fact returned shortly before
his 2 hours were up. He took the receipt to the
police, and they cancelled his fine.
In summary, if someone pays into the wrong
number parking space (which may happen to be
your car’s space), it overrides the previous
payment. If you pay for 2 hours, and someone
accidentally pays for the same parking number
for just 15 minutes, the 15 minutes are
registered on the machine. The most recent
payment becomes valid.
The moral of the story, is to always keep those
paper receipts until you are driving
away and don’t need it anymore. There
is no other way to prove that you paid
the correct amount if someone
overrides your payment.

with fabulous new hair-dos. Keri
used to work for Elisabeth Arden
in London and will be re-styling
members for very reasonable
prices. Starting on April 10th,
Keri will be offering cut and blow-drys in the
conference room upstairs from 9am till 2pm. To
allow Keri to give you the best service possible,
please sign up on the notice board. It would be
helpful to all if you take the next available slot on
the sign-up sheet.
Women’s cut and blow-dry – 40 minutes – 45 CHF
Men’s cut and style – 40 minutes – 30 CHF
Children’s cut and style – 20 minutes – 15 CHF
Please ensure that you wash your hair before
coming as Keri is unable to do so at the WAC. Be
considerate of Keri’s time and of other members
needs by arriving early for your appointment. A
―no show‖ policy will apply if you have not notified
Keri and agreed to a cancellation. Keri has two
further dates for her salon for your diaries – 29th
May and 19th June. Make sure you
sign up early, as Keri is so good at
what she does that demand really
outstrips her available time.
Now that your hair is sorted, it’s
time to move onto your
wardrobe...how about make your
own!? Too ambitious? Well perhaps a smaller
project to start with – join the new sewing classes
and develop a new skill that will be the envy of
couture everywhere – or at least give you the
basics of repairing the odd missing button or two.
This weekly course will be held in Uster – please
check the notice board for more information
regarding time, dates and cost.
OK so here comes a bit of a lecture – keep reading
as it applies to you all...I’m sure you’ve heard it
enough times before, but for those of you that like
our children that need telling twice (if not a dozen
times), please help us maintain a tidy clubroom and
kitchen area. Take ownership of the place as if it
was your own home – run the dishwasher when it’s
full, empty it when it’s clean, help tidy away toys
and dishes – even if it wasn’t you that left them
there. It’s easy to walk away from the mess, but
not the best impression for the next person
walking through those doors. The great
improvements to the interior of the clubroom will
be soon overlooked if we let it turn into Hell –
grottoes, due to indifference.
Speaking of Hell-grottoes, the MDO are going to
the aforementioned on the 10th April – anyone over
2 years old is welcome to accompany daddy into
these caves near Zug. Please sign up on the notice
board if you are interested in joining them
discover the magic and mystery of these colourful
limestone creations.
Hope you all have had a lovely Easter and
have not overdone it on the chocolate
rabbits. If indulgence has been your
undoing, May brings more fitness and fun to
the WAC, so I’ll let you know more about
that in the next issue.

READERS GONE WACky Alice Knöpfel
The Bad Girl by Mario Vargas Llosa
This novel begins in 1950s Lima, Peru, with
fifteen year old Ricardo falls in love with Lily,
a ―bad girl". The story of their lifelong love
affair unfolds across continents as they meet
again and repeat the same pattern: he is
devoted to her and she eventually betrays him.
Not until the end of their lives do they find
some kind of harmony.
This dramatic story was often romantic, but sometimes shocking. The bad girl was often
capable of cruelly mistreating her devoted lover. Ricardo was a curious mixture of
passionate devotion and patient contentment with his modest lifestyle. Lily’s need for
glamour and security, at any personal cost, drives her often to dismissive, sometimes
contemptuous, attitude toward Ricardo, whom she often belittles as a ―good boy‖.
Some members tried to read this novel as an exploration of the redeeming power of
unconditional love, but the unsympathetic, manipulative Lily made this difficult for others.
We also wondered whether such a man as Ricardo was a plausible character—is love capable
of overlooking such ugliness?
Some critics have called this book a reworking of Madame Bovary; Vargas Llosa himself
wrote a book about that novel. Others have seen it as an allegorical account of Peru’s
political fortunes, domestically and on the international stage.
The book club focussed instead on the characters. One member remarked that the story
―transcended cliché‖, and all felt that the tone was typical of the Latin American
perspective; one that we wish to explore in future book choices.
On April 7, we will discuss My Life in France by Julia Child, and then on May 12, Northline
by Willy Vlautin. All of our meetings take place at 8 p.m. in the Club Lounge. New members
are always welcome!
Please call Alice Knoepfel (044-912-2326) or Mary Ann Little (044-991-7939) for more
information.

Wanted-needed. Parents to help with Girls Club
Moms/Dads our Girls Club is over 5 years old. It is strong and much appreciated.
The girls range from 6-8+ and from 9-12 years of age (two groups) I have been running
the groups consistently and enjoy every minute of it. I would like to be involved in
other WAC activities like start a decorating committee that can make new decorations
for the WAC events. Some if not all, our major parties are still using decorations made
10 years ago! They are getting tired to say the least.

With little thought and seldom enough care.
So…….Treat your feet and yourself to some
regenerating TLC. A relaxing footbath, gentle
grooming of nails and removal of all dry skin
then a foot massage.
Only 15mins from the WAC and it’s not a prob-

This is the sole woman only race in
Switzerland and was started in 1987. A
couple of us WAC ladies wondered if we
could not make our own fun WAC Team. A
varieties of discipline are on offer: Nordic
walking, 5K or 10K or a 5K or 10 K run. The
track starts in the centre of Bern. It is
supposed to have a great atmosphere. Just
imagine women from all over Switzerland
assembling in Bern on a sunny Sunday to
"run" or " walk". The fees might look
excessive ( 60chf), but you have to
remember that it includes your train fare to/
from Bern, a nice t-shirts, some
refreshment along the way, a donation to a
charity and a delightful sight seeing of Bern.
So why don't you join on the fun, register on
Datasport and than sign on the Notice Board.
