If you’re watching commercial television over the next few months, you’re likely to grow weary of being bombarded with political advertisements. Yet another distinction of public broadcasting is that we will not accept political ads. Come to us for a safe haven from the candidate bashing and the “super PAC” spots.

And stay with us if you want the real story of what’s going on in this heavily contested political year. WOSU will carry PBS’s NewsHour coverage of both conventions, which will differ from other national networks in that we will show all of each evening’s proceedings unedited and commercial free. WOSU is repeating the previous night’s convention coverage on the WOSU PLUS

digital channel the following night. And PBS will be making broadcast history during the conventions, co-anchors Judy Woodruff and Gwen Ifill will be the first all-female team in news broadcast history to spearhead a network’s convention coverage. Hard to believe it took this long, but true!

89.7 NPR News will broadcast each convention day from 8:00 p.m.–11:00 p.m., when proceedings are scheduled to wrap. Coverage will include live podium speeches; expert analysis; and interviews with newsmakers, delegates, and NPR reporters and editors inside the hall. Once again, you can count on central Ohio’s all day NPR station for unbiased, noncommercial coverage.

The political season will be in full boil across Ohio in the coming weeks and you can get up-to-date through our award winning weekly TV program, Columbus On The Record and through the guests on All Sides with Ann Fisher on 89.7 NPR News.

Nationally and locally, public stations provide a remarkable difference and a clear alternative to biased cable networks and broadcasters who have to take commercial breaks to sell cars and candidates every 14 minutes. We hope you tune in! By Tom Rieland, General Manager

Primetime and Weekend

The War August 2–9 on WOSU TV (times vary) begins Thursday, August 2 at 9pm on WOSU TV

The War, a seven-part documentary series directed and produced by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick, explores the history and horror of the Second World War from an American perspective by following the fortunes of so-called ordinary men and women who become caught up in one of the greatest cataclysms in human history.

Six years in the making, this epic 15-hour film focuses on the stories of citizens from four geographically distributed American towns — Waterbury, Connecticut; Mobile, Alabama; Sacramento, California; and the tiny farming town of Luverne, Minnesota. These four communities stand in for — and could represent — any town in the United States that went through the war’s four devastating years. Individuals from each community take the viewer through their own personal and quite often harrowingjourneysintowar, paintingvivid portraits of how the war dramatically altered their lives and those of their neighbors, as well as the country they helped to save for generations to come.

Orangutan Diary Wednesday, August 8 at 9pm on WOSU TV

Deep in the Borneo rainforest, veterinarians and caregivers have a massive and emotional task ahead of them: rescuing and nursingthejungle’smostappealing—andmost vulnerable — animals back to health. There are approximately 600 orangutans being cared for day and night at the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation Centre. Most have had traumatic lives, clinging to survival as rainforests are burned around them, while others are snatched from the wild to be sold as pets.

Great Performances: Jackie Evancho: Music of the Movies Sunday, August 12 at 6:30pm on WOSU TV

In June 2011, eleven year-old singing sensation Jackie Evancho dazzled viewers with her first Great Performances solo concert from the spectacular Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, Florida. In follow-up to her GP debut, the little girl with a big voice returns with a new special showcasing the great songs from the silver screen. On Story Marathon Sunday, August 26 at 3–8pm on WOSU TV

Austin Film Festival’s On Story is a half-hour series that gives a behind the scenes look at the creative process of the country’s most beloved movies and TV shows. The show is a mash-up of footage of screenwriter and filmmakers discussing their craft and films. Each episode is thematically paired with one or two short films, with an introduction from the film’s writer or director.

American Masters Marilyn Monroe: Still Life Friday, August 24 at 9pm on WOSU TV

Marilyn Monroe was, arguably, the most photographed person ever. This program tells her story through interviews with photographers such as Eve Arnold, Arnold Newman, Elliott Erwitt, George Zimbel and Phil Stern, and especially through the photos themselves, an ageless testament to her grace, guts and sexiness — her humor and vulnerability. She understood their power and she exploited it. She created, and curated, her own image. Though she died 50 years ago, Monroe persists in her image.

August 19 Baltimore: Outsiders In

Baltimore is a city of many neighborhoods, of intense divides — racial, class, and otherwise — not easily overcome. It’s a city bogged down by a reputation for crime, poverty and dysfunction — a reputation not entirely undeserved. But all of that overshadows the passion and dedication many Baltimoreans have for their city, and for taking on what’s wrong with it in ways small and large. In this episode, stories of people who are working from outside the system to take on Baltimore’s problems and shepherd its promises into fruition.

August 26 Ozarks: Full Circle

The Ozarks have long been an isolated part of the country. Here, families have stayed in the same hollows for generations with little influence from the outside world. Everyone knows everyone else, which means that daily life here is steeped in the past, for better or for worse.

September 2 Comics: With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility

In this episode, a community where when evil rears its head, someone finds a way to set things right, even if they have to make sacrifices and defy the laws of our universe to do it. In this hour, the stories of real-life battles between good and evil in the world of comic books, where underdogs often come out on top and fantasy merges with reality. From creators and whistleblowers to real-life superheroes who’ve brought comics to life, putting on their own capes and costumes to fightforjusticeintheircities.

August 5 Southeastern WA: The Unlikely Perfect Place

The Tri-Cities are Richland, Pasco and Kennewick, three cities clustered near one another in the vast plains and deserts of Washington State, to the east of the Cascade Mountains. It’s a region that seems like it would have little to attract newcomers. It’s largely remote, prone to dust storms, notclosetoanymajorcity, but over the decades, this area has drawn people from the world over. These are stories of people drawn to an unlikely place for myriad reasons: what drew them here and what communities they’ve built here.

August 12 Vermont: the Small Town State

QuaintstorefrontsalongMainstreets, covered bridges over clear streams, cows from dairy farms dotting green valleys: across the state, these are the iconic images of Vermont. But beyond its pastoral beauty, this is a place that prides itself on its independent spirit. This is truly a place where individual communities are self-determining, where geographic isolation has forced people to get creative, and take their town’s destiny into their own hands. In this hour, a range of stories of the way Vermont’s “small town state” identity manifests.
