Preparation for Semester Exams$VWKHÀUVWVHPHVWHUH[DPVDSSURDFKSDUHQWVFDQKHOSyour students begin the process of studying for exams. It’s not too early to start!

Many teachers will give students an exam study guide in the coming weeks. Helping your teen set aside a little time each evening to work on the study guide is just one step you can take to help your student prepare for the semester exams. Parents are also good resources to quiz students over material or allow the student to explain concepts to them. Even arranging to have a study group over and providing snacks helps establish the expecta-tion that studying is vital for success on semester exams.

Along with general “how to” advice and time lines, the presentation will include a line-by-line FAFSA form expla-nation. The FAFSA form is the federal “Free Application for Federal Student Aid”, which almost every college uses for calculating the expected family contribution (EFC) for each student.

ACT/SAT NewsJuniors should plan on taking ACT and/or the SAT late winter or early spring. WKHS will be hosting an ACT prep course from ZAPS during the week of March 16th to help prepare for the ACT. It would be ideal for students to take the course and then take the ACT on the April 18th administration. More information about the ZAPS course will be sent home late January/early February. Go to www.wkhscounselors.com for links to ACT and SAT reg-istration.

College Credit for Free!Mark your calendar now for the February 9th Academic Options presentation at WKHS. Both parents and stu-dents can learn about Credit Flexibility and the revised program allowing students to earn college credit while still in high school. Under College Credit Plus, the new name, students who meet certain criteria can take col-lege classes for free. The presentation will begin at 7:00 pm in the WKHS auditorium. More information about College Credit Plus and Credit Flexibility can be found on www.wkhscounselors.com.

Semester Exams will be held on December 17, 18 and 19

Semester Exams - December 17, 18 and 19Dear Parent(s) and/or Guardian(s):

Exams will be given December 17-19. The exam schedule is printed below. Students are required to be in attendance during their scheduled exam times each day. At other periods during the day, if your student does not have an exam they are not required to be at school. Academic Intervention Assistants will be available in Room 209. The Library and Com-mons will be open for students that remain on campus to study. Please discuss your expectations of how your student should handle this special exam schedule.

Buses will operate on the normal schedule during exam week; except on Friday, when buses will depart WKHS at noon. In addition, lunch will not be served on Friday; the cafeteria will close at 10:15. Students who are remaining for makeup exams Friday afternoon should plan to bring a packed lunch.

During the semester exams week, parking will be available to students with yearlong parking permits in the designated WKHS student parking areas. Any student parking in staff parking areas or McCord lot will be subject to disciplinary action.

In case school is cancelled due to inclement weather, all tests will be moved back one day. If, for example, school is not in session on Wednesday, December 17, all tests for that day will be moved to the 18th. Tests from the 18th will then move to Friday, December 19th, and Friday’s exams will move to Tuesday, January 6th when we return from winter break. If there were to be a 2-hour delay on any exam day, the 7:45 exam that was missed would be re-scheduled to ÀOOLQWKHPDNHXSH[DPVORWRQWKHWKLUGH[DPGD\DQGWKHEXVHVZRXOGEHUHVFKHGXOHGWROHDYHDWLQVWHDGRInoon.

Holiday Compassion Project

The WKHS Student Council has conducted a building-wide Holiday Compassion Project since 1992. This service project, referred to as Adopt-a-Kid or Adopt-a-Child, is sponsored and organized by the Student Council, but all WKHS stu-dents have the opportunity to par-

ticipate. Over the past 22 years, this project has raised over $159,000 and provided gifts for 1293 children. First names, ages, and special requests of elementary and middle school children living in the Worthington School District who would probably have a bleak holiday sea-son without our help are gathered from a community outreach group. Because it can be awkward and poten-tially embarrassing for the students involved, the WKHS Adopt-a-Child program is not designed to raise money for the families of students currently enrolled in our building.

Each third-period class at WKHS is asked to “adopt” oneof the children and solicit for contributions. Students atthe Linworth Alternative Program are also part of this project and “adopt” two children. The goal is to raise anaverage of $5.00 per student in order to spend $125 per child. The wrapped gifts, labeled with the child’s name, will be distributed by volunteers from the Dublin- Worthington Rotary Club.

The 2014 Holiday Compassion Project is being conductedfrom November 24 through December 11. If you would care to make a contribution, you may send it to school with your student.

WKHS Mission Statement

Our Mission is to teach all students to act responsibly and think critically and creatively.

The New IB@WKHS Year is Underway!by John Jordan

IB@WKHS had an eventful summer and has hit the ground running this Fall:

During their orientation to the program, IB Year One students volunteered to distribute medals and refreshments follow-ing the Gussstrong/Drewstrong 5K race from WKHS to TWHS.

IB Year Two students have their Creativity-Action-Service “Wolf” Projects underway, and there is a special focus on service within our school. For example, one student is focused on an improved recycling program at WKHS, while another is creating video content WRKHOSFHOHEUDWHWKHVFKRRO·VDFFRPSOLVKPHQWVLQLWVÀUVW\HDUV

IB Year One students have chosen to focus on the issue of global hunger for their Creativity-Action-Service “Pack” Project. They will host two fundraiser meals featuring international “small plates” -- a lunch for the WKHS staff on the last day before Win-ter Break and a dinner for the public prior to the school musical in January. Each dish will feature an ingredient commonly used by the poor in the country of origin and students will share infor-mation about hunger in that country as they serve. Funds raised will be used to support an international hunger relief charity.

IB Year Two students are also hard at work on their Extended Essays. This year’s topics include “The in-WHQGHG DQG XQLQWHQGHG FRQVHTXHQFHV RI HFRWRXULVP RQ LQGLJHQRXV FXOWXUHV RI &RVWD 5LFDµ ´+RZ ÀIWKJHQ-HUDWLRQ SURJUDPPLQJ ODQJXDJHV FDQ PDNH FRPSXWLQJ PRUH HIÀFLHQWµ ´7KH LPSDFW RI WKH 9LHWQDP :DU RQthe Hippie Movement,” and “How NASA space technology contributed to the collapse of the Soviet Union.”

Investigations on the WKHS Ravine stream will begin this fall and continue through the spring.

The WKHS IB Parent Organization conducted its inaugural meeting in November, with a mission to sup-port WKHS’ IB students with ac-cess to resources, including exper-tise and networking opportunities. Parents in attendance received a primer on the vocabulary of IB and learned how to access a custom-izable set of Google Calendars to help them assist their students in time management and planning.

The winter and spring will bring new challenges as Year One students be-gin Individual Oral Presentations of their memoirs for IB Literature HL and Year Two students conclude

Encourage your senior to engage in a

Senior Project, 2015(April 20 - May 15)

On November the 12th all seniors received information about Senior Project 2015. Ask your senior to show you the handouts with the project overview and the calendar. Also encourage your senior to complete the yellow Interest form and submit it to Senior Proj-ect Advisor Mr. Miller.

Seniors who engage in senior project say it’s one of the most important experiences of their high school career.

First, they say, it’s real-world application of many things they have learned.

Second, seniors build a valuable network of contacts for summer employment and college internships. Several seniors have received scholarship assistance from internship sites.

Third, because they spend the last four weeks of their senior year on a project, they have no classes to attend during that time, yet are still able to participate in co-curricular ac-tivities. (Those dates above are not a mistake. Seniors who engage in a senior project are done with all their classes on April 17, 2015.)

Project possibilities are virtually endless: -- Veterinary medicine -- Art, art therapy -- Fashion -- Fire Fighting/EMT -- Writing/publications -- Education -- Physical therapy -- Photography -- Finance -- Graphic design -- Law enforcement -- Forensics -- Criminal justice -- Information technology -- Marketing -- Small business -- Dental hygiene -- Medicine

Next Steps:

1. Reserve April 20-May 15 on your calendar for Senior Project.

2. Secure a site and community sponsor and draft your goals.

3. See Mr. Miller immediately to initiate the process.

When to Keep Your Child at Home:Your child is too ill to go to school if he or she has any of the following symptoms:

• Temperature above 100 F by mouth (see below) • Vomiting or diarrhea within the past 24 hours (see below) • Shortness of breath or has increase in wheezing during normal activity • Has a cough that interrupts normal activity • Pain from an earache, headache, sore throat or recent injury. • Has yellow or green drainage from nose or eye(s) • Rash over body or localized to one area of the body )DWLJXHDQGQHHGVEHGUHVWFRPPRQZLWKÁXOLNHV\PSWRPV

Students who are sent home with a fever 100 degrees or higher must remain at home until the student is fever free for 24 hours without the use of medication. In most cases this means that students will miss the following school day. Please understand that fevers can rebound within a 24 hour time period and this policy is in the best interest for all students.

Students who are sent home due to vomiting or diarrhea must also stay home for 24 hours to ensure that these symptoms are gone before returning to school.

Please keep your student home when they are sick. It is in the best interest of your student to stay home when they are ill and helps us protect a healthy environment at school for staff and other students.
