ST. MATTHEW CHURCH GAHANNA, OHIO
LETTER FROM FR. SILL
Dear St. Matthew Family,As we move into May and into the gradual reopening of the state, I am excited about the prospect of being able to celebrate the sacraments together with you in person. We still don’t know exactly when that will be or how that will happen, but I am hopeful that soon it will be safe for us to resume public Masses and other sacraments. As we look forward to that time, I invite all of you to read and reflect on the mission of our parish:
As a community of believers who know, love, and serve Jesus Christ, we celebrate the sacramental life of the Church, proclaim the saving message of Christ, and share the love of the Lord, especially with the least, the poor, and the suffering.
As I’ve often mentioned, our mission statement can be distilled down to three words - worship, serve, and evangelize. These three words define the identity of our parish family. They have continued to guide me and our parish staff in our work over the last few weeks, and they will continue to guide us as the state slowly reopens.Although these weeks of restrictions have been a great struggle in many ways, they have also given us an opportunity to break out of our routines and to see our faith and our mission with new eyes. For example, I am encouraged by the number of people who watch our live streamed Masses. We are not currently under an obligation to attend Mass, yet I know families are making an effort to watch Mass and pray together. The Holy Spirit is working through our families to strengthen our domestic churches so that our faith community will be stronger than ever when we can return to the fullness of the Eucharist.I am proud of the parishioners who are asking for service opportunities during this time and who are viewing this disruption of normal life as an invitation to help others. When the stay-at-home order first went into effect, Bishop Brennan spoke of the extreme charity to which we are being called, and many of you have taken that to heart through your acts of service and generous gifts to the parish and to other organizations helping others.I am excited about the virtual prayer gatherings and Bible studies that are happening over Zoom and other video tools. Many of us have been forced to learn new technology, but what a gift it is that we now know how to include members of our community who in the past haven’t been able to join a Bible study or faith group because of health or child care schedules. I am told we also have social media visits from those who are unchurched and curious but aren’t ready to walk into our church - an unintended but positive outcome that could be the beginning of something! As we slowly start to return to normal, I encourage everyone to continue keeping our mission to worship, serve, and evangelize in the forefront and to look for ways to build on the strong foundation that is our parish family united in Christ.Sincerely in Christ,Fr. Ted

PARISH FAMILY SERVICE PROJECT – Is your family puzzled out? Have you played every game in your house (twice)? Is the sidewalk chalk worn down to a nub? How about gathering the family together for a Parish Family Service Project? It's easy (and safe)! The Community Shelter Board (CSB) is an organization that supports the homeless community in Columbus, and they need our help assembling snack bags, food boxes, and other supplies. Here's how to help:
1) Go to this website: https://www.csb.org/how-to-help-covid-19/
2) Click on one of the options (gather supplies, make snack bags, or make food boxes, depending on the current need).
3) Gather the items on the list and deliver them to the CSB (or contact Julia Hoenig for other options).
If you have questions, you can call the CSB using their contact information on the website or you can contact parishioner Julia Hoenig, who is coordinating this effort for our parish (614-404-6366 or [email protected]).Thank you for helping us live our mission to Worship + Serve + Evangelize!
FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER MAY 3, 2020
IN OUR PARISH
PARISH PROJECTSAs good stewards of your generosity and curiosity during this closure, the Facilities Team is pleased to provide you updates on St. Matthew's campus pursuits.A few weeks ago, we quoted Albert Einstein, “In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity” and your Facilities Team has found opportunity to tackle some of our larger projects. What started out as an opportunity to do extra cleaning and maintenance has turned into an opportunity to do more for our parish community; things we never dreamed we would be doing a couple of months ago. When the pandemic spread into our area it triggered countless decisions that would change how we live, work and worship. In a short amount of time we were asked to do things we knew nothing about, in fact did not even know what questions to ask or where to start.Within a week we were posting videos of the Church and Stations of the Cross. At the same time, we were scrounging for equipment to build a system in time to stream Palm Sunday Mass. After overcoming a series of technical challenges, our parishioners were able to join our priests in our Sanctuary for Mass. As we gained knowledge and experience, we soon added daily Masses. Last week we were asked to combine medias to enhance your Mass experience for the May Crowning and beyond.Last week the Bishop expressed interest in opening our churches for Pentecost Sunday. With the Bishop’s guidance we need to ensure a safe and healthy environment practicing social distancing and minimal touched surfaces. We are removing hymnals and Missals from the pews, doors will be propped open, hand sanitizer will be available, and everyone will be asked to wear masks for the safety of your fellow worshipers. In the coming weeks we will be trying new ways to share hymns and readings without books to reference. Watch for additional information on our website and live streams. This week our parish will start offering the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Again, we are challenged with ensuring everyone’s health, social distancing and confidentiality. Please be patient with us as we work through this new process. It seems every week presents more opportunities to address challenges, learn new things and do more for our parish family; it is our pleasure. We appreciate this opportunity to provide updates on what we are doing in preparation of resuming Masses and activities. Please don’t hesitate to text or e-mail suggestions on how we can better serve you in these difficult times. Contact George Harvey at [email protected] or text 330-904-1083. Stay healthy and God Bless.
CONFESSIONS AT ST. MATTHEW - Starting Wednesday, May 6, we will be offering Confessions on Wednesday afternoons from 1:00-3:00 p.m. We will be following guidelines set by the Diocese regarding safety and social distancing, one of which is that Confessions will be by appointment only and that appointments will last five (5) minutes each. The Diocese is asking penitents simply to confess their sins; any parishioner who needs additional time for counseling is welcome to contact our priests separately. To make an appointment for Confession at St. Matthew, please call 614-471-0212 or email Hillarie Michaels at [email protected]. We want to offer the opportunity to make appointments anonymously, so we will do our best to answer phones on weekdays afternoons, from 1:00-4:00 p.m. Anyone who does not require anonymity is welcome to call anytime and leave a message or to email Hillarie. All Confessions will be held outside the south entrance of the church under the portico. Many parishes in our Diocese will be offering Confessions, and anyone is welcome to contact any other parish for additional Confession opportunities. For a full list of parishes offering Confession and to view additional safety guidelines, please see the Diocesan website: https://columbuscatholic.org/confession-information.
GOOD SHEPHERD WEEK – Today, Sunday, May 3 is the World Day of Prayer for Vocations, and today's Gospel tells the story of the Good Shepherd. In honor of our good shepherds, Fr. Ted and Fr. Peter, we ask you to help us celebrate their vocation by showing how you are living our parish mission in your family! Please take a picture of your family worshipping, serving, or evangelizing and send it to Brooke Warren at [email protected] so that we can compile them and give them as a gift to our priests. (Please note that these images will eventually be shared on parish social media.) Your family can do anything you like that shows our mission, but we have some ideas on social media and our website. Thank you for helping us celebrate our priests and their vocation!
RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS (RCIA) – Curious about Catholicism? A new Period of Inquiry will begin on Tuesday, May 12. Due to the guidelines regarding social distancing, our program will look very different than in past years but we will still find a way to assist you on your journey! If you are interested in becoming Catholic or would simply like to learn more about the Catholic faith before making a commitment, please contact Jennifer Cabe at [email protected].
STEWARDSHIP: HOW CAN WE HELP YOU? As good stewards of our Parish, we are called to care for and look after St. Matthew Parish and its parishioners. We want to know how our parishioners are doing in this time of struggle and fear. How can we help you? How can we pray for you? Please remember to check on your neighbors, check on your family, and check on those who are at risk, while practicing social distancing. If you have specific needs or prayers, please email Brooke Warren at [email protected] and she will make sure to add you to the prayer list or find a way to get your needs met. We know there are a lot of people struggling financially right now and we want to help, but to do that we need the support of our parishioners who are still able to donate. If you usually give via offertory envelopes, please consider using online giving during our time away from the church. Visit www.stmatthew.net/giving for more information. You can also call the parish and leave a message; someone will call you back with more information. Thank you!
NEW TO THE PARISH? YOU CAN NOW REGISTER ONLINE Through at least the end of April, we will only be registering new parishioners online. Please visit http://www.stmatthew.net/new-parishioners and we will contact you with more information.
FINANCIAL SUPPORT FROM CHARITABLE WORKS - Parishioners, we know that many people are experiencing financial insecurity right now, so please know that our Charitable Works Ministry can offer some financial support to parishioners who need some help. We keep all requests for help confidential. You can contact Dave Eldridge, head of Charitable Works, directly at [email protected], or you can leave a message on the Parish Office voicemail, and we will make sure to pass it on to Dave.
