LETTER FROM FR. SILLDear St. Matthew Family,This Sunday marks the Solemnity of Pentecost, the official end of the Easter Season. We celebrate today the birth of the Church and the moment when the earliest Christians were given the gift of the Holy Spirit and sent forth to make disciples of all nations. The public ministry of the Church began on Pentecost.It seems fitting to me, then, that this weekend should also mark our return to public Sunday Masses and the first opportunity most in our community have had to receive the Eucharist in a long while. Even though many in our parish family are not yet ready to return to public Mass, we can still rejoice together at this opportunity to renew our commitment to our public life of faith.Whether you attend Mass or watch our live stream this weekend, I encourage you to pay close attention to the Pentecost Sequence, a traditional hymn that dates from the 13th Century, which is chanted between the Second Reading and the Gospel. Notice how the Holy Spirit is described: “comforter,” “welcome guest,” “sweet refreshment.” The Holy Spirit gives us healing, strength, and nourishment. He guides us and gives us joy.The Holy Spirit is always with us, of course, but his presence on this Pentecost seems particularly significant. We are a people in need of healing, of comfort, of strength and of the other gifts that only the Holy Spirit can give us.When you hear and read these words at Mass, don’t simply notice them, but pray them. Welcome the Holy Spirit into your heart and be renewed!In Christ,Fr. Ted

PARISH PROJECTSAs good stewards of your generosity, the Facilities Team is pleased to provide you regular updates on St. Matthew campus projects, improvements, and on-going initiatives.What a difference ten weeks makes; seems like ten months. Your Facilities Team has utilized the time wisely. After the closure in late March, every surface, floor, piece of furniture, statue, window, restroom, and HVAC system was cleaned and disinfected. Preventive maintenance has been performed, floors have been waxed, kitchens scrubbed, and every closet and cupboard has been cleaned out and organized. All this has been done in preparation of your return, confident our church is as clean as it can be.As of now, all our Masses have been restored; including both daily morning Masses at 6:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. (also streamed). Two weeks ago, we opened the Sanctuary for private prayer and meditation. Last week we offered daily public Masses at 8:30 a.m. Our focus can finally be back on celebrating the Sacraments … while being tested by distractive blue tape. LOL!You may also notice, there is no more latticework over the Altar. The last two murals of Seraphim Angels have been installed. All the murals have been trimmed in oak. Welcome back!The lower level of the church remains closed, including the Adoration Chapel and Library. Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament is planned for the main Sanctuary of the Church when a schedule can be established and covered. The advantage of utilizing the church includes more space for social distancing and no capacity issues. Thank you for your kind understanding and patience.School is officially out for the summer and we are already four weeks into the classroom cleaning process. Several smaller construction projects have started. It stopped raining last week allowing us to commence weed control, tree trimming and power washing. It will be a productive summer in preparation for the return of our students next Fall.We appreciate this opportunity to provide updates on what we are doing on campus. Please don’t hesitate to text or email suggestions on how we can better serve you in these difficult times. Contact George Harvey at [email protected] or text 330-904-1083. Stay healthy and God Bless.

VENI, SANCTE SPIRITUSCome, Holy Spirit, come!
And from your celestial homeShed a ray of light divine!Come, Father of the poor!
Come, source of all our store!Come, within our bosoms shine.
You, of comforters the best;You, the soul’s most welcome guest;
Sweet refreshment here below;In our labor, rest most sweet;Grateful coolness in the heat;Solace in the midst of woe.
O most blessed Light divine,Shine within these hearts of yours,
And our inmost being fill!Where you are not, we have naught,
Nothing good in deed or thought,Nothing free from taint of ill.
Heal our wounds, our strength renew;On our dryness pour your dew;Wash the stains of guilt away:
Bend the stubborn heart and will;Melt the frozen, warm the chill;Guide the steps that go astray.
On the faithful, who adoreAnd confess you, evermore
In your sevenfold gift descend;Give them virtue’s sure reward;Give them your salvation, Lord;
Give them joys that never end. Amen.Alleluia.
