One: And still, and always, our God remains faithful. Our God comes to us and meets us in the most unexpected places, so that where we expect to encounter walls, All: we find instead wells of forgiveness and fresh starts, and an invitation into a new kind of holy. One: Trusting in God’s faithfulness, let us open our lives to God’s healing presence, forsaking all that separates us from God and neighbor. Let us pray: All: Loving God, in whom we live and move and have our being – whose face is hidden from us by our sins, and whose mercy we forget in the blindness of our hearts. Cleanse us from all our many faults and offenses: our vanity, our pride, our violence, our busyness; our trying to do it all ourselves, our looking the other way. And forgive us when we mistake safety for sanctuary: when we stand our ground rather than extending our hand, or when we rest in our privilege rather than wrestling with its grip on our lives. Whisper to us the promise of your grace and illumine our way home, where all will be made well. (continued) WORSHIP | EMBRACE | SERVE in the manner of Christ

Offertory Anthem(8:15) The Walk to Calvary Norma Sateren Anderson (pub. 1996)

One night the Lord went out to pray alone in that dark garden, Gethsemane. And as he knelt there, he asked for strength to bear his heavy burden, Gethsemane. Oh, yes, my Savior, oh, how he suffered there in that dark garden, Gethsemane! He knew the path that he must travel then as he walked on to Calvary. By friends rejected, he was betrayed that night near that dark garden, Gethsemane, the people mocked him, they shouted, “Crucify!” As he walked on to Calvary. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world; Lamb of God, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you bring us peace.

The Service for the Lord’s DayThird Sunday in Lent

March 24, 20198:15, 9:30 & 11:00 a.m.

WE GATHER TO WORSHIP

Greeting Karl ZinsmeisterOne: The peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. All: And also with you. One: Let us prepare for worship.

Preparation for WorshipEternal God, your kingdom has broken into our troubled world through the life, death and resurrection of your Son. Help us to hear your Word and obey it, that we may become instruments of your saving love; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Prelude(8:15) CANDLER arr. Michael Burkhardt (b. 1958)

(9:30 & 11:00) Prelude on CANDLER (A Scottish Melody) arr. Katherine Larson (pub. 1996)WMPC Handbell Choir

Christian Welcome and Announcements Gloria JohnsonPlease pass the Friendship Register to your neighbor and include all requested information.

Call to Worship from Psalm 86:11-12One: Show me your way, O Lord,All: that I may follow in your truth. One: Give me an undivided heart to revere your name,All: and my whole heart will praise you forever.

*Hymn 797 - We Cannot Measure How You Heal YE BANKS AND BRAES

*Litany of Confession and Assurance of God’s GraceOne: It is not always with malice that we build walls, maybe not even most of the time, All: but it’s what we do: we armor-up, we worship what we do not know, and we hold sacred that which we do not truly understand.

Simon Peter: Flawed but Faithful Discipleby Adam Hamilton

Mondays | 6:30-7:30 p.m. | C301orTuesdays | 10:30-11:30 a.m. | C304March 25/26, April 1/2 and April 8/9

Peter left everything to follow his teacher and possessed a passion that would change the world. That’s one way to describe Peter. Here’s another: poor, uneducated, quick-tempered, and full of doubts and fears. Peter was faithful, yet flawed. Peter was the first to profess Jesus as Son of God, yet he later denied knowing him. Peter went on to give his life for the sake of this call. In this three-week study, we take an in-depth dive into the life, faith and character of Simon Peter using Adam Hamilton’s book.

Identical classes are offered Monday evenings or Tuesday mornings. Books are available in Tonya Higgins’ office for $12. Register online at whitememorial.org/register. If you have questions contact Gloria Johnson at [email protected] or 919-834-3425 ext. 207.

All second graders and their parents or special adults are invited to participate in this two-part Worship Workshop held on March 3 and 10 in the Chapel. This fun workshop will include music, crafts, and games as children learn about congregational worship. No reservations are necessary.

On March 10 at the 11:00 worship service in the Sanctuary, the children will be specially recognized and receive Bibles and milestones.

If you have questions, please contact Lynn Springfield at 919-834-3425, x232 or [email protected].
