PASTOR’S LETTER Healing the Living, Raising

the Dead…

Whenever there is a crisis, people are bound to have different ideas about the best way to approach it. The same is true of the spread of COVID-19. This kind of disagreement exists among us Catholics, too. The main bone of conten!on is

access to Mass and Holy Communion.

On the one hand, there are those of us who think that the benefits of being able to physically par!cipate in Mass, or at least receive Holy Communion, outweigh the risk that those who do so may get seriously ill or die from COVID-19. Priests who have this opinion have been having Masses in church parking lots or distribu!ng Holy Communion to people in the parking lot right a%er a Mass indoors.

On the other hand, there are those of us who think that the goal of reducing the number of people ge&ng seriously ill or dying from this pandemic outweighs the spiritual good of con!nuing to be able to physically par!cipate in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, or at least receive Holy Communion. Priests who have this opinion have not been celebra!ng Mass outdoors and have not been distribu!ng Holy Communion.

I think both groups have good inten!ons, love God and the Holy Eucharist, and love the people of God. What should we do?

Like always, the Gospels and the Tradi!on of the Church can help us chart a course.

In the Gospels, Jesus shows His infinite love for human beings —and divine power—both by healing the living and by raising the dead. The la'er points to the Resurrec!on from the dead—first His own, and, at His second coming, the Resurrec!on of all the dead, either to everlas!ng death or everlas!ng damna!on.

The Church has always sought to imitate Jesus Christ. In so doing, she has tried to help people with both their needs in !me and their eternal needs—or you, might say, their physical and spiritual needs. I believe that trying to help people stay healthy and not die from COVID-19 is a worthy way, in our day, to help people with their physical needs. Sure, we will all die someday from something—as a number of people have pointed out to me recently—but while that fact should help those of us who trust in Jesus Christ and—as far as we can tell—are in a state of grace to not be afraid of death, it shouldn’t prevent us from trying to help people stay healthy and alive. That is why, over the centuries, countless Chris!ans have founded hospitals and clinics and have helped the sick as nurses, doctors, other medical professionals and priests—providing both medical care and prayers.

Another thing we can learn from both the Gospels and the Tradi!on of the Church is that God’s grace comes to us in many ways. The sacraments are the way par excellence—especially the Most Holy Eucharist—but God is generous and crea!ve and has many other ways to reach out and share his life with us. These include personal prayer, reading the Bible and other good spiritual books, praying the Liturgy of the Hours and spending !me serving Jesus in his disguise of those who are poor—materially, emo!onally or spiritually. As evidence of the efficacy of these ac!vi!es, we need only call to mind the lives of devout Chris!ans who were obviously close to the Lord, and had very frui(ul ministries, without having ever received the Body and Blood of Christ, like Saint John Henry Newman before he became a Catholic.

What I am ge&ng at is that we don’t need to go to Mass or receive Holy Communion to develop and maintain a close rela!onship with God. Of course, we should par!cipate fully in the Eucharist if we are able to. The Eucharist is the source and summit of our faith. At the Last Supper, Jesus said, “Do this in memory of me.” He also said, “Unless you eat my flesh and drink my blood, you have no life in you.” At the same !me, the Church has always understood this as referring in a general way to the need of the Church as a whole to receive life from the Eucharist, not as saying that receiving Holy Communion is a necessity for every Chris!an to be saved and to flourish spiritually. For example, in the La!n Rite Catholic Church, children normally can’t receive Holy Communion un!l they are about seven years old. That doesn’t mean they are spiritually dead before that. There are also adult Catholics who can’t receive Holy Communion for various reasons, like their physical condi!on or where they live. God hasn’t forgo'en about them.

So, what is my conclusion? I think in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, and given that the Mass and Holy Communion are not the only ways to stay close to Jesus Christ, it’s more important for the !me being to protect people’s health than to insure con!nued access to physical par!cipa!on at Mass and recep!on of Holy Communion. So, un!l further no!ce, here at St. Raphael’s, we will not be having outdoor Masses, distribu!on of Holy Communion outside of physical par!cipa!on in Mass, or any Masses at which lay people are present, other than funerals and weddings, which will be limited to ten people. I know this is difficult for many people. I pray this long Eucharis!c fast will help us all grow in union with the sacrificial love of Jesus Christ. May the example of what he suffered on the cross for us help us to embrace our suffering at this !me for the sake of others.

Your fellow pilgrim through Lent, Father Rudolph

A new Plenary Indulgence During the Coronavirus Pandemic

Plenary Indulgences in General. The Catechism of the Catholic Church n. 1472 teaches that “sin has a double consequence. Grave sin deprives us of communion with God and therefore makes us incapable of eternal life, the priva!on of which is called the ‘eternal punishment’ of sin. On the other hand, every sin, even venial, entails an unhealthy a'achment to creatures, which must be purified either here on earth, or a%er death in the state called Purgatory. This purifica!on frees one from what is called the ‘temporal punishment’ of sin.”

Just as the Sacrament of Reconcilia!on removes the eternal punishment of sin by sacramental absolu!on, so too an Indulgence removes the temporal punishment of sin. The word “indulgence” comes from the La!n indulgere, meaning “to be kind or yield to another.” The Lord wants to be kind to his people, and the normal channel he does so is through the Church. The Church’s authority to grant indulgences is based upon the mandate of Jesus Christ: “Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven” (Ma!. 16:19). When the Church grants an indulgence, she “looses” someone from the temporal punishments resul!ng from sin, and this has heavenly consequences.

The Church desires to dispense this grace generously, yet not indiscriminately. She wants the faithful to be prepared for this grace, lest it overwhelm them. Consequently, the Church prescribes spiritual prac!ces the faithful are asked to perform, not to earn the indulgence—no one can earn grace—but to demonstrate their readiness to receive grace. These prac!ces can include praying certain prayers and receiving the Sacraments.

Some prac!ces are less demanding. These demonstrate a person is par"ally ready to be loosed and thus can receive a Par!al Indulgence. In extraordinary circumstances, however, the Church grants a Plenary Indulgence, meaning the recipient will be loosed from all (the plenitude of) temporal consequences due to sin. The Holy See has determined that the Coronavirus crisis is one such extraordinary circumstance.

Plenary Indulgence During the Time of Coronavirus As Archbishop Hebda indicated in his March 20, 2020 le'er, the Apostolic Peniten!ary has announced the gi% of a special Plenary Indulgence for the faithful suffering from COVID-19 disease, commonly known as Coronavirus, as well as to health care workers, family members and all those who care for them in any capacity, including through prayer.

Who can receive this Indulgence? The Decree specifies (1) those who have contracted the Coronavirus and are thus quaran!ned and unable to receive the Church’s sacraments normally; (2) health care workers, family members, and those exposing themselves to contagion as they care for those with the Coronavirus; and (3) those who visit the Blessed Sacrament, do Eucharis!c Adora!on, read the Holy Scriptures for at least a half hour, recite the Rosary, pray the Way of the Cross, or recite the Chaplet of Divine Mercy “to implore from Almighty God the end of the [Coronavirus] epidemic, relief for those who are afflicted and eternal salva!on for those whom the Lord has called to Himself.” How do candidates for this Indulgence receive it? To receive a Plenary Indulgence a person is required to: Have been bap!zed, in a state of grace, and not excommunicated; Desire to be free from a'achment to sin; Pray for the Holy Father’s inten!ons with the Creed, the Lord’s Prayer, and a Marian prayer such as the Hail Mary; Confess one’s sins and receive sacramental absolu!on; and A'end Mass and receive Holy Communion.

Normally, these should happen in proximity of each other, usually within a week. However, the Decree acknowledges that because of the Coronavirus persons might not be able to a'end Mass (except electronically/remotely), receive Communion, nor individually confess sins and receive sacramental absolu!on. Nevertheless, they may s!ll obtain the Plenary Indulgence, provided they intend to go to confession, a'end Mass, and receive Communion “as soon as possible.” The Decree does not put a !me limit on this condi!on.

What about those unable to fulfill the condi!ons? As can be seen above, virtually any of the faithful with the right inten!ons, even those quaran!ned, can fulfill the requirements. God is merciful and understands persons’ hearts.

Can indulgences be gained to benefit others? Persons on earth are responsible for their own des!ny and cannot be granted grace against their will; hence Indulgences cannot be applied to others s!ll living (they may refuse the grace). But those who have died and been judged worthy of eternal life, but are not yet ready for heaven because of a'achments to earthly pleasures, are being purged of these a'achments. Hence, those in Purgatory can benefit from our Indulgences. We can pray, “Lord, may X who is being prepared for heaven benefit from these graces which I am obtaining.” The Lord looks lovingly on us as we selflessly surrender our graces to another in need.

How many indulgences can I obtain? There is no limit to the number of Par!al Indulgences a person may obtain, but the Church limits the gran!ng of Plenary Indulgences to one per person per day.

SAINT OF THE DAY - SAINTS GWYNLLYW AND GWLADYS These two saints lived in the sixth century. Gwynllyw was a chie%ain of south-east Wales. He is said to have kidnapped Gwladys, one of the children of Brychan of Brecknock, and made her his wife. Cadoc was their first child. He was bap!zed by Saint Tatheus, to whom he had been entrusted for his educa!on, and became a monk and a much-travelled founder of monasteries. Cadoc was instrumental in his parents’ conversion and succeeded in convincing them to leave a worldly life. The couple then led an austere life close to each other on what is now Stow Hill at Newport in Monmouthshire, where the ancient Saint Woolo’s church—“Woolo” being derived from “Gwynllyw”—s!ll stands. However, Cadoc urged them to separate altogether, so Gwladys went to Pencarnau in Bassaleg, where a Catholic church is dedicated to her. They both lived in solitude un!l they died. Saints Gwynllyw and Gwladys, pray for us! Sunday Sermon for March 29, 2020, the Fi&h Sunday of Lent, Year A - by Fr. Robert Al!er Readings: Ez 37:12-14; Rom 8:8-11; Jn 11:1-45

In the second reading St. Paul makes the dis!nc!on between those who are in the flesh and those who are in the Spirit. By this he is not speaking of those who are alive in the body as opposed to those who are in Purgatory or in Heaven. Rather, the dis!nc!on is between those whose focus is on the things of the flesh (worldliness, materialism, sensuality, etc.) and are, thereby, giving themselves over to occasions of sin as contrasted with those who are striving to live a deeper spiritual life and have sought to remove sin from their lives.

St. Paul says that if Christ is in us, meaning if we are in the state of grace, then the body is dead because of sin while the spirit is alive because of righteousness. Elsewhere St. Paul talks about pu&ng to death the desires of the flesh, so when he speaks of the body being dead, he is talking about the fact that we put to death our sinful desires. This has been a struggle for human beings from the beginning, but with the internet and social media, it has become a far more difficult problem for many people in our day.

In order to put to death these sinful desires that rise up within us, we have to be aware of the way the devil works to tempt us. While some of the desires are natural and, of themselves not sinful, they can become sinful if they are sought for a purpose other than what God intended. In the desires that become tempta!ons to sin, the devil’s usual strategy is to make us look only at the immediate gain. The pleasure or perceived good we think we can obtain is placed before us. Since most of us grew up in the “immediate gra!fica!on” culture, it can be very difficult to resist and reject these tempta!ons.

The vile creature tries to tell us that this thing, whatever it is, will be good for us. For the moment, while a person is ac!ng on the tempta!on, it may even appear to be good because it provides the gra!fica!on we were seeking. However, most of us have fallen enough !mes to these tempta!ons to know that while we may obtain a momentary pleasure, it does not take long for the emp!ness to set in. The fact that we know the ac!on is wrong and, therefore, harmful to our souls, should be enough to keep us from giving into the tempta!on, especially if we remember the emp!ness we know we will experience and that we have fallen into sin.

Learning to look beyond the immediate is cri!cal, not only for overcoming sin and pu&ng to death the desires of the flesh, but for living a truly spiritual life. Anyone who has waded deeply into the spiritual life knows it is definitely not about immediate gra!fica!on. In fact, because God is trying to help us put to death anything that is not of Himself, there is o%en dryness and struggle. The goal of the spiritual life is not to seek gra!fica!on for ourselves, but to learn to love God with our whole heart and soul and strength.

This love for God and the growing union with God that happens in prayer will bring about the righteousness by which our spirit is alive. Our spirit is alive because of the Holy Spirit Who dwells within and animates us with His divine life. Since this life is the life of God, or sanc!fying grace, it moves us to conform our lives more perfectly to His. At the same !me, as we die to our selfish desires, our sole desire is loving God and seeking to be with Him. This is the promise God made to the Jewish people through the Prophet Ezekiel when He revealed the resurrec!on. Our ul!mate call and purpose is Heaven, not earth; it is supernatural life, not merely natural life.

When Lazarus had been in the tomb for four days, Jesus told Martha that her brother would rise again. Martha professed her faith in the resurrec!on, but Jesus encouraged her faith by saying: “I am the resurrec!on and the life.” When He asked Martha if she believed this, she responded by making an act of faith in the divinity of Christ by saying: “I have come to believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, the One Who is to come into the world.” If you and I can make this same act of faith in the Person of Jesus, then we need to choose Him Who is our life. This means coming out of the tomb of our sinfulness and living for Jesus now, believing in His promise that we will share in the glory of His resurrec!on and life forever.
