Time for an Update
Several folks in different settings have asked about plans for my concluding months with First Church of the
Brethren. Christy and I will be moving to Harrisonburg, VA. The exact date of moving is still being worked out. My last
day will be August 31 with my last Sunday being August 20. This is to coordinate two schedules. My wife Christy will
conclude her ministry with Stone Church of the Brethren, Huntingdon on August 27 and of course I wanted to be with
her on this significant day of transition. She will plan to be here at worship on August 20. Because of all the transition
issues in our lives, we decided not to attend Annual Conference in Grand Rapids. So, I will be here on July 2 to preach.
There may be a few days of vacation scattered during the summer, to work at moving, but no trip to Hawaii this year!
We are in the midst of selling our home and securing a home in Harrisonburg, VA and so many details wait to be
revealed as we work hard to make sure everything is in order to sell and buy. I would ask for your prayers as I continue
to pray for you and minister during these remaining weeks. Thank you for your interest and care in so many different
ways.
Summer Is Coming!
Many of us look forward to summer! The pace of life often slows down in a certain sense. Perhaps routines are
different and that all important vacation looms on the horizon. In the church, perhaps the pace of activities slows
somewhat, but the work of the church continues. Even with vacations, family reunions and other events that take us
away from regular participation in Sunday morning Christian Education and Worship, all of us are encouraged to
remember our stewardship commitment to the church’s ministry. Your commitment to the ongoing ministry of First
Church of the Brethren is essential in order for us to continue to provide outreach. Paying the pastor’s salary or any of
the paid staff is part of our ministry outreach. Keeping the building cool on hot days helps us
worship in a more pleasant atmosphere. So, if you are not going to be here, double up your
offering on the Sunday’s you are present. Our offering is our thanksgiving for what God has done in
our lives and in the life of this congregation. A continued regular giving pattern helps with the needs
of ongoing ministry during the summer months. May you find real joy and blessing in your generous
giving during the summer. Enjoy the wonder of God’s creation! Pastor Dale Dowdy

Relay for Life Team The Relay for Life team is once again selling subs from The Ultimate Sub
Company. There is a variety of types and there were many positive comments
the last time we sold them. Orders need to be turned in by June 4th to Krista
Snyder or Paul Witkovsky. Cost is $7 and they will be delivered June 13th.
This year’s Cove Relay for Life Event, held at the football field, is June 23rd into the 24th. There are many ways
you can be involved and help support our 1st Church Team.
- Donate for a Luminary in memory of or in honor of someone and it will be placed around the track. A
donation of $10 per Luminary is suggested.
- Sign up to walk. We strive to have someone representing our team walking the track from the opening
ceremony Friday morning until closing Saturday morning. You can sign up for a ½ hour time slot or longer.
- Make a Gob Cake. We will be selling gob cake during the event. See Linda Steele if you can make a cake.
- Help at our site. Spend ½ hour or more helping sell cake and popcorn and
handing out survivor gifts.
- Visit the event to check out the activities, purchase items sold by the teams,
attend the evening ceremony honoring survivors and the fight against cancer,
or just to say, “Hi, I’m here to show my support”.
See Nancy Forshey, Jim Hoover, Krista Snyder, Janet Imes, or Paul Witkovsky
with questions.
Listening to God’s Mission Among Us Celebrating God’s Guidance
The PROJECT VISION TEAM formed one year ago in May with 7 persons called to the task of helping our church family
look at where our congregation would like Roaring Spring First Church to be in 5 years. After a lot of discernment&
prayer, the Team developed 3 main missions:
1.To evaluate our building’s interior storage areas, and work at clearing out and de-cluttering
2.To look at ways to expand our knowledge of Brethren History
3.To develop opportunities for small group meetings to include fellowship time and where persons could share
where their hearts are leading them as vital parts of our congregation’s future
All 3 missions have been progressing simultaneously throughout the last 8 months with different persons on the
Team taking leadership roles in the different missions. The de-cluttering project is ongoing and will continue as
needed, and as volunteers surface. The Brethren History informational sheets have been appearing periodically in
the bulletins and will soon be complete. The small group cottage meetings held last fall led to a combined
celebration gathering in February where further informal conversations produced excellent results in gathering
person’s visions and dreams. These results were then categorized according to popularity, and the top five visions
were then presented to the congregation at large during a Sunday School hour in March. Participants were able to
share their voice in how they could see these 5 visions becoming realities within the life of our congregation; some
happening within the next 6-12 months. The compiled data has most recently been shared with the current
Leadership Team, it’s 5 Core Ministry Teams, as well as with representatives from the Deacon Body. It is the desire
of the Project Vision Team that these Core Teams begin to dedicate sufficient amounts of time, energy, and prayer
into looking at ways to bring the data from paper to real life opportunities not only within our congregation, but
within our community and the wider church.
With this last presentation being completed, the Project Vision Team feels as though it’s work has gone full circle,
and is at a point of completion. It will now become the responsibility of each of us: the Leadership of the church, the
ongoing new energy of our church family, and our love for God to continue His work through these findings as we
move into the last half of 2017 and beyond.
The Team thanks each and every one of you for whatever way you helped to support our 3 missions. Well done,
good & faithful servants.
Team members included Janet Imes, Pat Frazier, March Garach, Matt May, Hank Meetze, Kaye Russel, and our
facilitator, Pastor Dale Dowdy.

FINANCE AND FACILITY
FINANCE
We are meeting our income projections
through week 19 (May 7). Total income is
103 percent of our budget plan and Giving
income is 102 percent. Our expenses
continue to run below budget. This results in
some surplus which will be used to address
spending changes in the remainder of the
year.
ATTENDANCE
Attendance for church service since the
beginning of the year has averaged 147, and
77 for Sunday School.
FACILITY
- New down spouts from the roof have been
installed and runoff will ultimately go under
the sidewalk and into the street in the
church front.
- A new dishwasher was installed in the
kitchen eliminating much hand washing and
improving sanitary handling of plates and
eating utensils.
- The Fellowship Hall floor is scheduled to
be professionally cleaned and waxed on May
24. Some tile replacement will be done
around the kitchen area.
“So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly
or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver.”

Notes:
Doing faith Faith is better understood as a verb than as a noun, as a process than as a possession. It is on-again-off-again rather than once-and-for-all. Faith is not being sure where you’re going, but going anyway. A journey without maps. [As theologian] Paul Tillich said … doubt isn’t the opposite of faith; it is an element of faith. —Frederick Buechner
