THE TRANSFIGURATION OF OUR LORD: This festival of the church occurs on the Sunday prior to Ash

His humanity. Traditionally, it occurred on Mt. Tabor and was intended to prepare the disciples for Christ’s

identifying who Jesus is and by anticipating the events in Jerusalem.
SHROVE TUESDAY: This day is observed as a day of merriment and feasting. It immediately precedes the

A MESSAGE FROM
PASTOR FRED
Jesus said, 'I AM...'
Karoline Lewis, professor of homiletics writes: 'Jesus as the one-and-only God, ...
is the distinctive claim of Christianity. Yet in today's world what's said and
believed about Jesus has the tendency to divide Jesus' humanity from Jesus'
divinity.
Our Christologies seem comfortable with choosing one or the other, depending
on whom we need Jesus to be in a certain time or place - or, for a certain purpose.
What difference does this make? Well, when we collapse Jesus' humanity into
Jesus' divinity, it gets harder to imagine the purpose and pathos of the cross. After
all, if that was God nailed to a tree, to what extent was that true suffering? And
when we minimize Jesus' divinity, it becomes easy to reduce Jesus to an above
average teacher, miracle worker, and advocate of the poor.'
This year during our Wednesday Lenten worship we will look into the five great
I AM statements of Jesus in the Gospel of John and ask what is being humanly
said and what is being divinely said.
Or, is it impossible to separate them?
In Peace,
Pastor Fred

Pastor Fred’s Mid-week Bible Study
Pastor Fred’s Mid-week Bible Study meets on Wednesday mornings at 10:30am.
Please join us for a weekly study and discussion on scripture. Pastor Fred uses a variety of study methods as we delve into the text of the bible. How do the words speak to us today? How can we apply them to our daily lives? Pastor Fred invites you to come and discover new insights
into the Bible with him and the rest of the class. You don’t even need to bring a Bible if you don’t want to, we have plenty at church. We hope to see you on Wednesday morning for Bible Study!

Flower Dedications
The Ministry of flowers is an important part of the Sunday
Service at St. Luke Lutheran. Flowers are used to beautify
our sanctuary and are a gift to God and those who attend
Worship services.
Altar flowers may be dedicated to “The Glory of God”, “In
Memory of” a loved one or “In Honor of” a special person,
an anniversary, birthday, birth, baptism or other special event. More than one
person may find a certain date important so flowers may be given in more
than one name on any given Sunday.
If you would like to donate and dedicate flowers for any Sunday service,
arrangements cost $27.00 each. You will be billed directly from Coleman
Brothers Flowers and the flowers will be delivered to the church. The flowers
are yours to take home after the service that Sunday or you can ask that they
be taken to one of our ill or homebound members. Please return the container
the flowers are in to the church at your convenience.
You may sign up on the flower chart that is located in the fellowship hall.
Please contact Tammy in the church office or Jean Stewart if you have any
questions. Thank you.
The 2018 Flower Chart is up in the fellowship hall.
The 2018 Flower Calendar is now up in the fellowship hall. To those of you who give flowers every year during the same time frame, thank you. If you’re new to St. Luke or haven’t signed up yet to provide Sunday altar flowers, won’t you consider doing so? Flowers can be planned for a date on or near your special date, to occur yearly. Flowers may be given in more than one name on any given Sunday. If your date seems to be taken, please sign up anyway or call the church office to do so. If you would like more information about our Flower Calendar or if you have any questions about Altar Flowers, please contact Tammy in the church office at 804-272-0486 or [email protected]. You can also contact Jean Stewart, our sacristan, at 804-276-2690. Thank you.

St. Luke’s Weather Policy and Worship Cancellation Information
We are now into the time of the year when we may have to
deal with wintery weather and the cancellation of worship
services or fellowship events. In the event of inclement
weather, please be advised that St. Luke follows the same
protocol of the public school systems in the area. Usually,
if local schools are closed because of bad weather, St. Luke
will be closed for all church activities and to all groups using our building.
Please check www.stlukerichmond.org, the St. Luke web site, for the most up to
date info on any changes. All weather related cancellations and changes will be
posted on the home page. If you do not have a computer available, please call the
church office at 804-272-0486. If possible, the message there will be updated as
changes are known.
