Thursday afternoon brought everyone together…literally. Our practitioners were joined in the main lecture hall by our auxiliary (ADIA) attendees. Typically, the auxiliary attendees (dental hygienists, dental assistants, front office staff and implant coordinators) are in a separate lecture hall. However, we decided to bring everyone together to kick off this event. The emphasis on the team approach was evident in several lectures from our Young Implantologists who started off the afternoon. Drs. Ali Afshar of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, Jarrett Foust of Gibsonia, Pennsylvania, Cyndi Nguyen of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Scott Watkins of Dallas, Pennsylvania were selected for this Young Implantologist Program. These speakers came across as knowledgeable, confident and poised from the podium and we hope to see them again at a future event - well done! Following these practitioners were several seasoned speakers in our Pearls of Wisdom segment. These speakers included, Drs. John Conness of Ottawa, Illinois, H.Ray Hazen of Rochester, Indiana, Katherine Misch of Sarasota, Florida and John Olsen of Franklin, Wisconsin. Their delivery was hailed by many attendees as they all spoke to the team effort involved in implant dentistry as well as different aspects of avoiding dental implant complications. With the success of this portion of the program we plan to bring everyone together again at future events so be sure to bring your team.

After a very busy Friday, Dr. Rick Ferguson did a fantastic job kicking off our Saturday morning lectures to several hundred attendees with his lecture on, “Reducing Implant Placement Complications with the Convenience of In-Office 3D Printed Surgical Guides. Same Day, Next Day, Every Day”. Immediately following was Dr. Jack Hahn with his presentation on, “Immediate Extraction Replacement Complications; Single Tooth To Full Arch: ‘The Thrill of Victory and the Agony of Defeat’”. Dr. Ady Palti resumed the morning session after a short intermission with, “Implant Solutions for Narrow Ridge Cases: How to Deal With Them in the Daily Implant Practice” and Dr. Craig Misch completed the morning with, “Avoiding Complications of Bone Augmentation”. After the lunch break, Dr. Francis DeLuca provided information on, “Managing Your Risk When Things Go Bad”. Next up was Dr. Michael Tischler who addressed, “Zirconia Full Arch Screw Retained Bridges: a Multi-Year Perspective. Avoiding Surgical and Prosthetic Complications”. Our last two speakers of the day were Dr. Yvan Poitras who lectured on, “The All-on-4 Concept: A Biomedical Research of its Long Term Success” and, last but not least, Dr. John Preece finished up the day and the symposium with his presentation, “Avoid Complications, Add A Maxillofacial Radiologist To Your Team”.

As mentioned earlier, in addition to the scientific session there was a full 2 ½ day program for auxiliary team members sponsored by the ICOI’s component

society, the Association of Dental Implant Auxiliaries (ADIA). Doctors are realizing that the education their hygienists, dental assistants, front office staff and implant coordinators obtain at our symposia, adds great value to their practices. We hope you will consider bringing your team to our next event and let us train them for you.

With the success of this event behind us, we look forward to our World Congress XXXV on August 17-19, 2017 in Vancouver, Canada. We hope to see you there as we pay tribute to the late Drs. Carl Misch & Leonard Linkow as well as celebrate the ICOI’s 45th Anniversary. It’s an event you won’t want to miss. For more information visit www.icoivancouver2017.com.

The new ADIA website is up! Please visit www.adiaonline.org to see the new website and let us know what you think. The ADIA continues to charge forward in its mission of providing the most up to date dental implant education for the entire auxiliary team.

To that end, the ADIA meeting in New Orleans in February 2017 was an outstanding success. In an effort to emphasize the importance of the entire dental team, auxiliaries started the program with the doctors in the main auditorium on Thursday. This was followed by the evening cocktail reception and table clinic presentations where several ADIA members presented outstanding table clinics alongside the doctors.

The meeting continued on Friday with a stellar lineup of ADIA speakers and concluded on Saturday with the ADIA advanced certification courses for assistants, hygienists, practice managers and implant coordinators. These full day courses provide education focused on the specific knowledge and skills necessary to become an integral and indispensable part of the dental implant team. Once an auxiliary completes all four certification programs, they are eligible for ADIA Fellowship, the most advanced ADIA credential. Our most recent ADIA Fellow is Ms. Stephanie Sertic from Denison, Texas, who received her advanced credential award at the ICOI/ADIA awards ceremony in New Orleans and was cheered on by her peers.

Please join us in Vancouver, Canada for the ICOI/ADIA World Congress XXXV. It promises to be an outstanding program full of valuable take home information and pearls. I also encourage all auxiliaries to present a table clinic. It is a wonderful venue to share your knowledge and experience with your peers.

Best regards,

Dr. Avi Schetritt, ADIA Executive Director

Speakers and Opinion Leaders Training

FDI and ICOI

In a world where technology dominates our lives, and social connections occur at the speed of light, there is still great power in effective oratory. Yet the technology that is supposed to support our communication, often undermines it.

PowerPoint and Keynote are often the largest focus of many presentations in dentistry today. Hours can be spent on photography, layout, animations and so on, in an effort to stand out on a podium. In this focus on our technology, the pure skill of speaking, of public communication, and being able to persuade and emotionally engage an audience, is often lost.

In February, dentists involved in public speaking or teaching came from Brazil, Australia, Germany, Poland, USA, UK and Lithuania for the first Speakers and Opinion Leaders training. The focus was on speaking with power, with emotion and with appropriate support from visual slides.

Each member presented short clinical PowerPoint/Keynote presentations as if they were lecturing and had their presentation dissected and feedback on what went well, and what did not. Little mistakes that are extremely common in lecturing (like looking at your own slides and turning your back on the audience, or bouncing laser pointers) were brought out and discussion about how these lose the energy and engagement of the audience. Then the group moved on to pure speaking exercises having a short period of time to come up with a non-clinical speech to be delivered without slides or notes.

Each participant was amazed at how much more interesting, emotional and engaging they were when speaking without electronic support. Even very experienced speakers found weaknesses in their technique which could be improved. Overall it was a tremendously successful event and consequently, it will be repeated.

The FDI and the ICOI have started a collaborative effort to see that oral implantology / implant dentistry becomes part of several future FDI landmark conferences. An African Regional Congress organized by the FDI and supported by the ICOI took place in Marrakech, Maroc 27-29 of April. Several African dental leaders and several thousand delegates took place. ICOI Europe President Dr. Ady Palti gave an engaging presentation. Multiple question/answer exchanges took place. Six additional FDI / ICOI events will take place in the next two years. The weather in Maroc was so delightful that an ICOI Congress will be held in Maroc in March 2018.
