How Drivers Can Enhance Nighttime VisibilityMany drivers are considerably less comfortable driving at night

than during the day. Even though roads tend to be less congested when the sun goes down, reduced visibility at night can compromise the safety of drivers and their passengers.

Statistics indicate that drivers’ fears of driving at night are not unwarranted.

According to the National Safety Council®, traffic death rates are three times greater at night than during the day, and the anxiety many drivers feel when behind the wheel at night no doubt contrib-utes to nighttime driving fatalities. But drivers who take steps to enhance their nighttime visibility may feel more comfortable driv-ing at night, making the roads safer for themselves, their passengers and their fellow motorists.

• Turn your headlights on earlier. Daytime running lights can make it easier for drivers to be seen during the day, but they are not designed for nighttime driving. If you find yourself struggling to see as evening transitions into nighttime, turn your headlights on earlier or use your car’s automatic switch setting if it has one.

• Prioritize headlight maintenance. Headlight maintenance is often overlooked, but properly maintained headlights can go a long way toward improving driver visibility at night. Check your head-light bulbs. If they are more than three years old or dimming, it would be a good idea to replace them to ensure the best perfor-mance. Headlamp clouding is also an issue. Plastic headlamp lenses, which are common on most vehicles, grow hazed and yellowed over time from the effects of sunlight, ozone, road pollution, and wash chemicals. While many motorists accept this as inevitable wear and tear, clouding reduces headlight output and compromises nighttime visibility. Designed to restore plastic lenses in less than 30 minutes, the Philips Headlight Restoration Kit quickly and effectively com-bats clouding on headlights as well as taillights, turn signals and reflective lens covers, improving driver visibility while also making cars more visible to other drivers. In addition, the Philips Headlight Restoration Kit employs a protective UV coating that produces longer lens clarity while preventing future clouding for up to two years.

• Take steps to fight fatigue. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that driver fatigue contributes to 100,000 reported traffic accidents each year. Drowsiness is a concern for any motorist driving at night for long periods of time, as heavy eyes can make drivers less alert and less likely to see fellow motorists, pedes-trians or animals. When driving at night for long periods of time, take periodic breaks so you can get out of the car and revive yourself with a quick walk and some fresh air. In addition, avoid smoking while driving, as the NSC notes that the nicotine and carbon mon-oxide from tobacco smoke can further compromise nighttime vision.

• Upgrade your headlights. According to a recent study from the automotive club AAA, the halogen headlights found in more than 80 percent of vehicles on the road today fail to safely illuminate unlit roadways, even when vehicles are moving at speeds as low as 40 miles per hour. The solution for this problem is simple: Put more light on the road. There is new bulb technology available to help you do just that. Philips Upgrade Headlight Bulbs can deliver up to 100 percent more light on the road than standard halogen bulbs. They also create a better beam pattern for the drive, greatly improv-ing nighttime visibility.

ACT Releases 13-Event 2016 Schedule

Bear Ridge Speedway honored the champions from its 48th Season of dirt track stock car racing on Saturday, December 19. More than 300 drivers, crew members, sponsors, fans, and officials filled a sold-out banquet hall at the Lake Morey Resort in Fairlee, VT for the gala, and more than $20,000 in prizes and point fund purses was awarded.

Adam Pierson of E Corinth, VT headlined the guest list as the Bond Auto Parts DIRTcar Sportsman Modified Champion. Pierson held off the runner up once again, Kevin Chaffee of Bradford VT, taking the title by a mere 10 points. The young-est driver in the division came home in third, Jordan Fornwalt of Bradford VT with Derek Graham hailing from Woodsville NH, and Josh Sunn of White River Jct rounding out the top five.

Bob Shepard of Topsham, VT was honored as the DIRTcar Wells River Chevrolet Sportsman Coupe champion. Shepard had a dominate lead for most of the season slipped a bit in the end to make things more interesting, but was able to hold on to the crown by seven points over runner up Thomas Placey of Bradford VT. Finishing third three points behind second and five over fourth was Topsham VT’s Josh Harrington. Melvin Pierson, not present, was 4th and last year’s champion Jason Colbeth of Newbury, VT survived a rough season to hold on to fifth.

Adam Pierson of E Corinth claimed his second USAC Dirt Midget Association Championship in three years. Pierson continued to be too tough to beat with his team mate Josh Sunn White River Jct VT, only able to get to second. Dean Christensen recorded his best finish ever coming home in third, with Kevin Chaffee back in the Skip Matzcak machine coming home in fourth and Scott Holcomb rounded out the top five.

James Fadden of Plainfield, NH was named the Crazy Ed’s Laquerre’s Sports Limited Late Model champion over Rookie Tim Martin of White River Jct. Rookie Matt Lashua came home in third and Travis Smith completed the eligible drivers present in fourth.

Rookie Justin Severance of Brandon, VT won his first Weglarz Property Service Four Cylinders championship in a dominating fashion, winning 15 of 19 races. Last year’s champ Mike Ryan would have to settle for second with Jesse Durkee taking home third. Good Time Charlie Lakin finished in fourth with rookie Robert Welch taking the fifth spot.

Special awards were given in several categories, headlined by the prestigious John Poor Memorial Award, given annually to one driver from each of the Modified and Coupe divisions.

John Poor was an important official at Bear Ridge Speedway for many years and the award bearing his name is given to drivers who elevate the sport of stock car racing through exceptional conduct on and off the track. Kevin Chaffee won John Poor Memorial trophy in the Modified division, with Brian Chaffee taking the honors in the Coupe division.

The Bob Shepard “Drive, Desire, Determination and Dedication” award, given by an anonymous fan sponsor was awarded to two recipients this year, Herb Gray and Gene Pierson.

Kevin Chaffee was the winner of the Modified division’s annual Sportsmanship Award. Matt Ellsworth won similar honors in the Coupe division, as did USAC Midget legend Ray Miller, Tim Martin in the Late Models, and for the first time ever a female wins the award in the Four Cylinders with the honors going to Kaitlyn Coates.

Race fans voted Richie Simmons as the Most Popular Driver in the Modified division, with Josh Harrington earning the honors in the Coupes. Kevin Chaffee in the Midgets, Travis Smith in the Late Models, and Rookie Robert Welch in the Four Cylinders took home the hardware for this award.

The Big Al’s Photos “What A Picture” Hard Luck Awards were given to Modified driver Robert Tucker, Coupe Jeremy Beckley, Midget driver Kevin Chaffee, Late Model driver Travis Smith, and in the Four Cylinders Kaitlyn Coates.

Josh Currier was given the Lap Leader Award for the Modified division with Buster Kathan taking the honors in the Coupe class. Josh Sunn won the award in the Midget division, with Late Model Tim Martin, and Mike Ryan in the Four Cylinders leading the most laps in their respective divisions.

The Raymond/Cliff Bullis Memorial Award for perfor-mance on the track and conduct in the pit area was awarded to Ryan Christian, Buster Kathan in the Coupes, Jeff Horn in the Midgets, Matt Lashua in the Limited Late Models, Jacob Roy in the Fours Cylinders.

More than 50 prizes were given to racers by random draw. The night was capped with the deal or no deal event for 5 lucky drivers the top award of a $1,000.00 gift certificate was taken home by Josh Currier.

Our ever favorite Speedway Illustrated’s Karl Fredrickson honored us as once again being the Keynote speaker.

The American-Canadian Tour (ACT) has announced the release of the 2016 ACT Late Model Tour schedule. The 13-event series will see the Tour visit 12 different tracks in six U.S. states and the province of Quebec as they pursue the $10,000-to-win ACT Championship.

The season will once again kick off with the New Hampshire Governor’s Cup 150 at Lee USA Speedway on Sunday, April 10 and crown the 2016 champion at Connecticut’s Thompson Speedway on Saturday, October 15. Other traditional early-season events which have returned include the 18th Merchants Bank 150 at Barre, VT’s Thunder Road on May 1, the Spring Green 116 at Plattsburgh, NY’s Airborne Park Speedway on May 14, and a 100-lap event at Fair Haven, VT’s Devil’s Bowl Speedway on June 4.

The 2016 schedule will again feature three ACT/Pro All Stars Series (PASS) double-headers. The two series open the Oxford Plains Speedway racing season on Sunday, April 17. ACT and PASS then travel to

Quebec’s Autodrome Montmagny on Saturday, July 23. The 150-lap event is the ACT U.S. Tour’s first visit to the speedway since 1999 and is a combination event with Série ACT.

The third ACT/PASS doubleheader is set for Saturday and Sunday, September 17 and 18 at Scarborough, ME’s Beech Ridge Motor Speedway. The ACT portion will mark the return of the Fall Foliage 200 to Beech Ridge, which previously hosted the event from 1987 to 1989. Beech Ridge will be the only track to host two ACT Tour events in 2016, with the Fall Foliage 200 being held in addition to their traditional early-August date.

Autodrome Montmagny is one of three tracks the ACT Tour will return to in 2016 after a long hiatus. The Tour visits Connecticut’s New London-Waterford Speedbowl on May 21 and Massachusetts’ Seekonk Speedway on July 16 for the first times since 2010 and 2007, respectively, as part of the Southern New England Tripleheader. The three-race, three-track series concludes in the ACT season finale at Thompson as part of the World Series of Speedway Racing. Annual summer vis-its to N. Woodstock, NH’s White Mountain Motorsports Park and Groveton, NH’s Speedway 51 round out the schedule.

Vermont Mountaineers Staying in MontpelierThe Vermont Mountaineers, the current NECBL champion

will continue to call Montpelier Recreation Field home through at least the 2036 season. The City of Montpelier and the Vermont Mountaineers came to terms on extending the team’s lease for twenty more years.

Mountaineer General Manager, Brian Gallagher stated, “We are extremely happy to know that going forward we can reassure our fans, volunteers, host families, sponsors and donors that the team will remain at this historic ballpark. The City of Montpelier has been very supportive over the years and we look forward to continuing to work together to make this facility one of the nicest in the NECBL.”

According to Montpelier Mayor John Hollar, “The Mountaineers are a tremendous asset for our community. In addition to the hundreds of thousands of dollars the organiza-tion has invested in the city’s facilities, we benefit from thou-sands of out-of-town visitors each summer and the great rec-reational opportunity the team provides for families.”

As a thank you, the Mountaineers have agreed to send two game tickets out with every Montpelier tax bill each July through the term of the lease that will be good for any regular season game.

The team has invested over $550,000 into the cities prop-erty since 2003 and this past fall laser graded the outfield to improve the playing surface and drainage. The organization is now starting to raise funds to improve fan safety by increasing the netting down the baselines.

“This is a priority of the board and we hope to have some of the areas done by opening day 2016 and more as we can afford to in future years,” Gallagher said.

The Mountaineers have sent 10 players on to Major League Baseball in their short history and you never know when you will be watching a future MLB star, such as former Mountaineer

and current MLB All-Star and gold glove winner AJ Pollock. Mountaineer season tickets are now on sale and are good

for all 22 regular season games as well as playoff games. Tickets are reasonably priced at $50 for students and seniors, $75 for adults and $130 for a family of four.

The NECBL northern division teams (located in Montpelier, VT, Hartford, VT, Keene, NH, Laconia, NH, Sanford, ME, North Adams, MA and Holyoke, MA) have all agreed to honor each others season tickets. This is a huge win for those fans that like to travel to follow the team and should increase crowds at all locations. Tickets can be purchased at www.thevermontmountaineers.com.
