SAVING THE EARTH AND LOOKING GOOD!!!The most characteristic aspect of eco-fashion (the manufacture, use, and promotion of sustainable and environmentally conscious products) is by no means a new phenomenon, but rather a continuation of an ongoing history of organic modes of production.

The organic movement got its start in the 60s, and among the innovations of this era was an unprecedented push for locally-grown food products free from pesticides or chemicals, eventually expanding into the realm of cosmetics and beyond.

It was this 60s movement which helped develop a base for environmental and sustainability concerns in the manufacturing, production, and marketing of goods, contributing substantially to the current trend of ethical consumerism in the world of fashion apparel.

Eco-fashion additionally evolved from a history of dedication to fair trade. In the late 1990s, after a huge outburst in activism against sweatshop labor and worker exploitation (most noticeably in 1998, when the Fair Labor Association developed a code of labor practices for apparel companies manufacturing within the States and abroad), many sweatshops operated by large apparel companies were shut down. Thus the seed for eco-fashion was planted.

The Ready-To-Wear-Away Dress is eco-friendly and green fashion. The dress is the result of a collaboration between couture designer Sylvia Heisel and Paper No. 9‘s Rebecca Cole Marshall.

This unique dress is crafted out of a recycled Kraft paper from Paper No. 9 that gives a leather-like look. This paper-fabric is then skillfully crafted with a sheath underneath with quotes written by imminent personalities that eventually get revealed as the outer coat of the paper breaks away due to body heat and movement. Heisel has reinvented herself by designing this chic-looking ‘green’ dress that not only looks stylish but also conceals a series of hand-written inspiring quotations from famous artists, writers ranging from Gandhi to Truman Capote.

The designers, came up with an idea to design a dress that reveals hidden inspirational quotations as the dress becomes worn. Body heat & movement enable the dress to reveal a variety of printed words from iconic figures such as Ghandi and rapper Tupac. The Ready-To-Wear-Away Dress is a modern example of the ever-changing world of fashion as well as the need to protect the environment. It definitely makes for one good conversation piece.

The designer kept it simple with silks, organic cotton, and silk linens. “I wanted to keep it really natural, just beautiful fabrics that wear really well and wash easily,” Pleet explains. “Nothing is shiny. Fabrics are muted but really glamorous.”

Particularly memorable are the vivid, saturated hues, a result of the digital technology they use. “It really comes from the AirDye process,” Costello says. “We really play with the back colors as much as the front colors. That really pops the color a lot.”AirDye uses 90 percent less water and 85 percent less energy than conventional dyeing methods.

A South Beach-inspired palette of pinks, greens and turquoise felt soft yet appro-priately vibrant, and pocked, rough surface textures, created with dense beading and sequins, added oomph to solid pieces.

While the clothes were undeniably inspiring - a ladylike bouclé trench and a floral-camo blazer were among the standouts - the fabric that served as their backdrops had a story of their own. Benz intends to turn the pastel silks into dresses to be auctioned off for charity, according to Melissa d’Attilio of Fly Productions, which put the show together. That wasn’t the only sustainable element of the show, either. The models stood on platforms made from recycled apple crates gussied up with fluorescent tape.

M.PatmosThe M Patmos SS12 collection evokes one word: wearable. Every piece stood on its own and simultaneously mixed in with all the other pieces seamlessly. Soft beige and grey tones set the mood that was then accented with a bright pop of lime green and navy. As a feeling, the collection can best be described as gentle. Gentle colors in very gentle on the skin fabrics such as organic cotton and hemp. Just enough designer detailing to set each piece a part and add interest. The knit pieces are exceptionally special and are all produced using a women’s cooperative in Bolivia who hand sew the pieces using dead stock yarn.

Earthquakes, nuclear meltdowns, stock-market crashes; is it any wonder that Suzanne Rae yearns for simpler times? Showcasing her Spring/Summer 2012 collection at New York Fashion Week on Monday, the Brooklyn designer delivered a convergence of bikinis, playsuits, and fluttery gowns - constructed from organic cotton, recycled hemp, raw silk, and even raffia - on a platform that was more boardwalk than runway. Suzanne Rae nostalgia for the past was apparent: Paired with tai-chi flats and Tumble-weeds sunglasses made in San Diego from remnant woods, Rae’s beachy, laid-back looks ushered a rare moment of calm amidst the tumult.

Using traditional garment construction in addition to experimental draping and patterns, the designs are both beautiful and edgy. Fine and natural fabrics are used to make each piece not only look good but feel good. Suzanne Rae produces well fitting garments that thought-provokingly expose, conceal or enhance the natural curves of the female figure.

Short for “Creative Opportu-nities,” Crop by David Peck is a Houston, Texas-based ethical fashion line and if their successful debut says anything about their future, they’re not going anywhere anytime soon.

For summer 2011, Peck transforms photojournalist Jaime Collier’s images of villages, children, and living conditions in Uganda into fashion. The result: gorgeous prints on fair trade and certi-fied organic materials in form-flattering silhouettes.

and/or certified organic materials, they collaborate with local artists and artisans and all of their fabrics are handmade by weavers; many of whom work on ancient looms more than 300 years old, which require only the energy of the weaver.

When it comes to silk, they opt for traditional milled silks, which they dye by hand with low-impact dyes. They often reuse the dyes and rinse water and also digitally print their garments.

Jewelry designer Ted Muehling traveled to Pohnpei and studied the carvings of ivory-nut palm tree seeds by local craftsmen.The seeds are known as ”Vegetable ivory” because their hard, creamy inner core resembles ivory. Over the course of its life, each ivory-nut palm tree produces hundreds of seeds that drop naturally to the ground.

Muehling also collected black pearls that come from the black lip oyster. Because the oysters can thrive only in extremely clean and healthy lagoons, conservation works hand-in-hand with developing a pearl industry.

Back in his studio in New York, Muehling fash-ioned a series of jewerlry pieces, including a pair of earrings from vegetable ivory carved in the shape of a manta ray. He also assembled a neck-lace that celebrates the innate variations in shape and color among black pearls.

Designer Jesse Herbert, who is also a musician, wanted a way to distribute his music to friends and customers different from CDs. He decided on USB keys and built them into steampunk-inspired, vegan-friendly cuffs, made from a pretty surprising source: recycled linoleum flooring.

Herbert’s first version of the bracelet was made of leather in the form of a wine rack made for bikes. For the cuff, he wanted an option that would be acceptable to vegan friends and customers.

The necklaces are made of human hair, a material we are familiar with and take pride in. However once off of the body it becomes an innate source of aversion. I wanted to see if I could make discarded hair attractive again.

Through the familiar form of a necklace, and using patterns and symmetry that we instinctively find aesthetically pleasing, I hoped to create a delicate balance between the viewer/wearers feelings of aversion and attraction.

Jeffrey Wang, founder and director of the creative platform Blanq World, is an old acquaintanceof Lancia TrendVisions. He is back under the limelight with a project in collaboration with Levi’s and the Taiwanese Fubon Art Foundation.

Wang is a master at the art of recycling, and without any sartorial work on the jeans, he manages to put together statuary garments joined together with simple safety pins.Every pair of trousers is a cerulean wave in the drapery of the Korean stylist-artist, who in “Persona” carves out five garments while retaining the worn weft and the coarse personality of recycled denim. Designed to preserve the sustainable sensibilities of its components, the end table comes with a recycled steel top and fourteen, yes fourteen, bamboo legs that have been carbonized to give them the extra edge. The bamboo used in the legs has been heated to give it the strong and rich caramel tint. The legs have been cut to peek tantalizingly through the surface of the tabletop and give the top a unique and interesting texture.

The jaded surface top features geometric water jet-cuts that lend the table a surprisingly innovative texture. It doesn’t make it ideal for keeping little things like pins and pens on top of it, but what’s a little discomfort when it comes to fashionable pieces like this.

Domination implies taking over. If we had it our way, natural systems would dominate entirely. Natural systems operate in perfect efficiency. Humans are both part of those natural systems and also somehow separate. The further we stray from connec-tions with nature, the more alien we become. Tres Birds Work-shop was commissioned to concept, design and build an art installation in Downtown Denver for the purpose of encouraging people out of their offices for daily fresh air breaks. We highly recommend it. The installation made up of part vintage office furniture and part 100% live vegetation reminds us not to let office overgrowth affect a healthy relationship with the outdoors. All of the vegetation used in the installation were reused + recy-cled afterward.

But how could we counter these alienation of our basis of life?The expensive, highly compacted urban area doesn’t leave much room for agricultural prac-tices and not everybody has access to a balcony or garden. Our poetic answer to that question is the “Parasite Farm”: A system that enables you to compost your biological waste, produce humus soil and to grow your own vegetables and herbs — all within your apartment!

To integrate with your interior and your habits both the vermicompost system and the plant boxes use existing furniture as infrastructure. The parasitic objects are fed by your food scraps and provide you with fresh vegetables. We hope that this small-scale nutrient cycle makes people discover the fascination of growing you own food and evokes questions about the current industrial food production and possible alternatives.

World’s LargestROOFTOP FARMThe 40,000 square foot organic roof-top farm built by Bromley Caldari Architects is believe to be the largest of its kind in the world! The almost 1-acre farm is an oasis surrounded by little greenery and lots of concrete in Queens at 37-18 Northern Boule-vard. After a successful first growing and selling season that began last spring, the farmers at Brooklyn Grange are continuing their produc-tion of organic produce.

Brooklyn Grange is the product of Wisconsin native and Head Farmer Ben Flanner, who in 2009 started the Eagle Street Rooftop Farm, the first rooftop soil farm in NYC. Flanner’s interest and passion for farm-to-table food led to a farming team with roots in the restaurant business. The owners of Roberta’s in Bushwick,

Chris Parachini and Brandon Roy, as well as restaurant veteran Anastasia Plakias, sustainable food advocate Gwen Schantz, and the team’s first apprentice Rob Lateiner, in addition to dozens of volunteers, all contribute to the farm’s growing success. The team partnered with Bromley Caldari, a NYC architect firm dedicated to problem solving, and Acumen Capi-tal Partners, a private company dedi-cated to the reuse and sustainable renovation of commercial spaces in New York City. Acumen has leased the warehouse rooftop to Brooklyn Grange for 10 years.

Brooklyn Grange‘s organic produce is grown in 7.5” deep beds with Roof-lite soil. Produced by Pennsylvania soil company Skyland, Rooflite is a lightweight soil composed of organic

matter compost and small porous stones which break down to add trace minerals that are needed for the produce to grow into a healthy and mature state. The use of organic soil means that everything produced by Brooklyn Grange is sustainable and good for you. The farm had a nine-month growing season last year, and during the winter, they used cover-crops such as rye, buckwheat, vetch, and clove, resulting in a year-round production of organic goodness right in the heart of NYC!

It turns out that cooking with solar energy completely changes the taste and texture of dishes cooked with other forms of energy. Solar cooking also requires a certain amount of flexibility. When the sun is blazing, dishes can be churned out in no time, but less intense sunshine will require longer cooking times. Rain is even more challenging for the solar-chef: in the event of such weather, either the restaurant has to cancel its dishes planned for the day or shift gears completely and prepare meals that don’t require a lot of heat.
