When the Germans caused

destruction in Belgium and

France, this was also included in Posters. Please note the innocent

little girl in the foreground.

Page 9: World War I Propaganda Posters…

This is a very famous poster.

What do you think the artist was trying

to convey?

Page 10: World War I Propaganda Posters…

Many friends joined up together and died

together. These friends joined

battalions, and these were called the “Pals”

battalions because the soldiers were serving with their

friends.

What is the message of this poster?

Page 14: World War I Propaganda Posters…

Even today, Army posters recruit by

saying that soldiers can receive money for education and training. That was the same way in

World War I.

Page 15: World War I Propaganda Posters…

Germans were scene as “home-wreckers.”

Page 16: World War I Propaganda Posters…

The French posters are

especially artistic and beautiful…

In the next poster, please note the pickelhaube helmet that was very distinctive. It was used by

the Germans during World War I. The spike was meant to be intimidating…but it actually

ended up being a good target site for the French, British, and Americans. The German

helmets in World War II did not have the spike.

Who is in the picture on the wall?

Page 22: World War I Propaganda Posters…

This is a German War poster—from 1917—the year

that the Americans joined.

Page 23: World War I Propaganda Posters…

Who do you think that man

is with the fancy helmet?

Page 24: World War I Propaganda Posters…

The Germans felt that Jesus Christ was on their side—what do

you think? What kind of person would this

poster motivate?

Page 25: World War I Propaganda Posters…

In American, food rationing began, so that food could go to the war effort. Both

Soldiers and Civilians (other people) needed food in

Europe. The War had disrupted the

harvests.

Page 26: World War I Propaganda Posters…
Page 27: World War I Propaganda Posters…

Even children were encouraged to sacrifice for the

war effort…

Page 28: World War I Propaganda Posters…

The word “Hun” was used for Germans. It was similar to “Japs”

that was used in World War II. The “Huns”

were actually ancient German tribes who

fought the Romans two thousand years earlier!

version of Uncle Sam…

Page 33: World War I Propaganda Posters…

You should recognize this name—yes, its

General Pershing who led the unsuccessful

search for Pancho Villa. He was our chief

commander in World War I.

Page 38: World War I Propaganda Posters…
Page 39: World War I Propaganda Posters…

Page 40: World War I Propaganda Posters…

Finally, at what stage of World War I do you think this poster was

created? Does it look like a great motivator? Why or why not?

Page 41: World War I Propaganda Posters…

World War I and World War II were the golden age of War Posters. These posters, in their

original condition, are now very valuable.

Page 42: World War I Propaganda Posters…

The posters were meant to “sway” opinions, motivate soldiers to enlist, and encourage

civilians to help with the war effort.

Page 43: World War I Propaganda Posters…

Propaganda posters do not have a place in our society anymore. There is more information,

and we can easily decide for ourselves what to believe.

Page 44: World War I Propaganda Posters…

But there are elements of these posters in our modern recruitment posters…

• Bold Designs • Catchy phrases
