Failure of the League of NationsA. Purpose: The league of nations was thought up to prevent

against nationalistic aggression and maintain world peace.

B. Why did it fail?q It failed because it did not have a military to enforce its

decisions. q Examples: 1931 – Japan invaded Manchuria and 1935 Italy invaded

Failure in 1931 – Japan invaded Manchuriaq What happened as a result?q The Chinese government

appealed to the League of Nations to punish Japan.

q Response: The League condemned Japan’s action and tried to negotiate, but Japan responded by withdrawing its membership from the League.

Failure in 1935 – Italy invaded AbyssiniaqWhen Italy invaded Abyssinia, the League of Nations immediately voted to impose trade sanctions against Italy. qProblem: France and Great Britain were reluctant to punish Italy as they wanted Italy’s support in case of a new war with Germany.

Foreign Policy: AppeasementWhen Hitler began to violate the Treaty of Versailles (occupying demilitarized zones), France and Britain choose not to act.

They were willing to make concessions to maintain peace.

Hitler saw the appeasement as a sign of weakness and this made him bolder.

Treaty of VersaillesqThe harsh terms of the Treaty of Versailles paved the way for the German public to be receptive to the Nazi’s promises to defy and get out of the Treaty of Versailles.
