The cause of the war.

There was a number of reasons the war started.

One of these was that Countries were joining alliances so if one went to war so would the others!

Another reason was that Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated in Siberia so Austria-Hungary declared war on Siberia!

The guy who killed me caused the war!!

The war Germany was on

Austria-Hungary’s side and wanted to invade France.

But, to do that they had to invade Belgium.

As Belgium was such a small country, Britain joined the war!

The battle of the Somme

The battle of the Somme was one of the bloodiest battles in history.

As Ireland was still in the British empire they had to fight too.

This battle lost the most Irish lives of WW1!

It took place beside the river Somme.

Christmas 1914

Nobody thought that the war would go on until Christmas never mind to 1918!

On both sides, on one of the battlefields there was an unofficial ceasefire everyone went on to no man's land and exchanged gifts, ate Christmas dinner and

to top it all off, had a game of football!

Great craic!

Food! Glorious food!

• There was very little food in the trenches during WW1.

• There are 2 reasons for this:

• The commanding officers didn’t want their armies to get comfy so when they had to leave, they left without question.

• The other reason was that they only had a limited amount of food supplies.

• The maximum amount of food per day was ½ kg!

U-boats

• U-boats were actually German Submarines and were the cause of the food shortage as they sank all supply ships and civilian ships!

• One such ship was the Lusitania. An American ship which was carrying 1,200 people. America was so angry, it Joined the war

• In both Ireland and England there were lots of posters urging people to join the army. Here are some examples:

• In November 1918, Germany surrendered and the war was finally over!

• There was a massive 37million casualty list!
