Three Basic Layers

• Balungen = “Nuclear Melody” – the basic “tune” (played one pitch per beat) [“skeletal melody” in textbook]

• “Colotomic Structure” = “metrical structure” of Balungen (marked at end by largest gong)

• “Elaboration” = fastest moving upper parts, division of the Baungen into smaller units
