Soybeans could not be competitive if 50% of their materials were waste. Similarly, as holistic uses evolve, it will place pressures on existing producers.

The protein of this particular strain is almost 20% arginine, which should be of interest to cosmetic manufacturers in regards to wound healing and other cosmetic applications.

In anchovy oils, Docosadienoic (C22:1n6) is the largest co-concentrate, followed by an almost equal amount of the combined Heneicosanoic (C21:0), Behenic (C22:0), Erucic (C22:1n9), Tricosanoic (C23:0), Lignoceri (C24:0), and Nervonic(C24:1n9). In general, there is often a higher degree of general isomerisation present.

In EPA oils, the co-concentrate is Arachidonic (C20:4n6).

In DHA oils, the co-concentrate is Docosapentaenoic (DPA, C22:5n3).

Beyond the cost issues, several reputable groups believe we are already past the ability to sustainably harvest fish. Groups like GOED are already projecting that we’ve surpassed sustainable harvest.

Whereas conjugation is now common practice in order to increase the EPA/DHA within the phospholipids of krill oils, the process is expensive. Algae naturally begin with higher start values and a 50/50 blend of EPA/DHA algal strains would naturally yield values of up to 50% EPA/DHA in the phospholipids.

TMA’s can be problematic in krill oils whereas the JIT processing of algae omits this.

Though the list is far from being complete, aside from infant formula, the ultimate consumers of algal products are aligned with one or more of the above. A good reference would be companies such as Patagonia and Method, where people first buy the products because of the quality, but also feel good about the purchase in that it has been made from a company they feel is aligned with their values.

Whereas this influence is less in regards to pharma applications, it is greater in foods and cosmetics. There are questions RE the ability for a GMO to also appeal to customers when their positioning is also predicated on sustainability.
