WORKSHOPS THAT WORK
RUNNING WORKSHOPS TO DRIVE CUSTOMER ENGAGEMENT AND STICKY KNOWLEDGE
what is a workshop?
ironically, we are not doing a workshop today!
workshops are not presentations
they are interactive
workshops are not discussions
they are guided and designed
workshops work well for corporates
workshops work well for start-ups
workshops work across cultures: Malaysia
workshops work across cultures: Japan
workshops work across cultures: India
workshops work for university students
(Thailand)
workshops even work for families!!!
they work for year-end 1-on-1 performance evaluation meetings
or building personal development plans
why a workshop?
workshops are fun – no sleeping or email!
participants learn better
participants execute better
you may know the material, but they know the context
helps people who learn differently
allows for surprise
create long-term relationships and
coaching
more long-term consensus - lots of
opportunity to disagree and commit
less stress / work for you!
outputs tangible deliverables that are totally tailored for the
customer

how?
be clear on the objectives
get the right people in the room
4 < participants < 80
create the right atmosphere
bring the right tools
be clear on the rules
warm up the room
(but keep the tempo rockin’)
idea -> activity -> debrief -> personalize
activities move from induction to deduction

WORKSHOPS THAT WORK PART 2
BEING AN EFFECTIVE FACILITATOR
Eric TachibanaPreviously at UBS, Bank of America, Merrill Lynch, and eXtropia (Singtel, M1, Maxis, Telstra)
YOUR FACILITATOR TODAY
DISCUSSION ONE
It’s not too late to chuck the agenda! What is it that you want to get out of
today?
GROUND RULES
• WORK VERSUS WORKSHOP• VEGAS RULES• DIVERSITY & INCLUSION• WHAT & HOW BEHAVIOURS• PARTICIPATION PRIZE!!!!!!• STAY FOCUSED ON OUTCOMES!
PART ONEWhat effective facilitators do before the workshop starts
ACTIVITYIndividually, brainstorm as many best practices as you can that apply to the “before” period. One best practice per post-it note. (7 min)
ACTIVITYIndividually, brainstorm as many best practices that you can think of that apply to the “before” period. One best practice per post-it note.
There are 4 areas to post your ideas. Post and then we’ll discuss as a group. (13 min)
• Logistics• Material• Participants• Misc ideas
PART TWOWhat effective facilitators do
during the workshop
ACTIVITYEach of you has a sheet of flip chart paper. I’d like you to “draw” the journey of the facilitator as a story (sci-fi, fantasy, comic book, whatever). (20 min + 20 min discuss)
Who are the other characters, what are the highs and lows of the journey? What must the main character overcome? What traps does he/she need to avoid? What weapons or tools does he/she use?
PART THREEWhat effective facilitators do
after the workshop
ACTIVITYLet’s break into 3 groups. Each group will focus on detailing best practices around one of the following topics (20 min):
1. Call to Action (getting participants to commit to real change)
2. Collateral (what we capture and how we present it back to the customer)
3. Surveys (how should we design & use surveys)
Groups present. (15 min, 5 each)
PART FOURNext Steps
ACTIVITYWrite yourself an action plan – what do you
need to do before your next session?!?
Pair up with one other participant and share your plans.
Both of you sign against each plan.
Agree when you’ll set a joint checkpoint to ensure that you are on track to deliver your
plan.
thank you and let’s continue the dialog…
