Workshop objectives It is increasingly common for children to self-identify as “anxious” “stressed” or “overwhelmed”. In this workshop we will explore the impact of anxiety on engagement and learning in young people. We will explore positive, practical strategies and approaches that can be used in school settings to develop emotional literacy in children and encourage the development of personalised coping strategies. Workshop content In this one-day workshop participants will:

Consider the differences between stress and anxiety and how these feelings can have both positive and negative effects on learning and engagement

Workshop objectives In this practical two-part course, delegates will gain an understanding of the theory and practicalities for the use of LEGO kits with children who have communication and interaction difficulties, as well as guidance and feedback on setting up and running LEGO groups in school. Workshop content Originally devised in the U.S. as a therapeutic intervention by Daniel Legoff, there is now a growing interest amongst schools in the use of LEGO kits to promote the development of communication and interaction skills in children and young people with ASD. The format and structure of a LEGO group session combined with the inherently motivating and engaging aspect of using LEGO kits to build a model, has been demonstrated to have a positive impact on the development of key pro-social skills. We will also consider how other toys and games can be adapted to suit the LEGO intervention model to ensure it is engaging and motivating for all young people, including adaptations that can be made for very young children. Workshop objectives The skills of play and friendship are an integral step in developing healthy relationships and learning to turn take, share and collaborate. Some children, including those with social communication difficulties, may need additional structure and support to develop and generalise these skills.

Workshop content This one-day workshop will provide a breakdown of the range of skills necessary to establish and maintain a friendship and offer strategies for their application

Participants will consider the normal development of friendships and how supporting pupils at their correct developmental stage is preferable to placing expectations on outcomes by age.

Participants will consider the value of play as a method of relieving stress and anxiety amongst children.

Participants will consider when, where and how friendship skills programmes can be delivered so that there is a measurable impact on learning, behaviour and wellbeing for pupils

Participants will consider what the structure and content of a friendship or play skills group might be, in particular regard to children and young people with social communication difficulties.

Participants will receive a range of practical resources and strategies including:

A two-part friendship skills pack that may be used to deliver a friendship skills group for children and young people with social communication difficulties.

A play skills pack that may be used to support staff to develop inclusive playtime practices and provide structures and ideas for developing supported play as well as supporting children to develop confidence with their peers and on the playground.

Target Audience This workshop has been designed for staff working with primary aged children but will have some relevance for older pupils. The emphasis is upon children who seek friendships but fail to maintain them and those who need structure and support to play collaboratively.

This half-day workshop will provide ideas and strategies for a young person has failed to develop effective handwriting to meet the curricular needs going into upper KS2 and into secondary school. Some students may benefit from intensive handwriting interventions while others will benefit from alternative paper-based methods of recording because their handwriting is only functional. We will consider alternative ways of recording understanding and knowledge which are not paper based, as well as the use of assistive technology and its implications for public examinations.

Workshop objectives Participants will learn the principles underlying the use of signing and symbols. They will learn signs and symbols for stages 1-4 and additional of the Core Vocabulary.

Workshop content

The Level 1 and 2 course provides a practical introduction to the Makaton language programme. Over 100,000 children and adults use Makaton symbols and signs, either as their main method of communication or as a way to support speech

Sessions include discussing commonly asked questions, hints and tips for effective signing and symbol use and how to start using Makaton in everyday situations at home or work

Participants will learn the signs and symbols for Stages 1-4 and additional of the Core Vocabulary

Participants will consider what signs and symbols are relevant for them and plan for how to establish and maintain an inclusive signing environment

They have good decoding skills to read text but struggle to take meaning from what they’ve read. This one-day workshop will look at the causes of this, what assessments might be helpful in early identification and how we can provide effective intervention to improve the outcomes for learners who can read but not understand. Workshop objectives Participants will gain a basic understanding of some of the causes of Selective Mutism and consider the challenges that it presents.

Workshop content The day is split into four distinct sessions so that the information and ideas shared are age appropriate for the child that you are supporting, but you are welcome to attend the whole day if you feel that would be beneficial. It will incorporate not only the theory behind the condition but also practical step by step strategies that can be followed to help reduce the child’s symptoms.

Participants will:

Gain an understanding of why someone may be selectively mute and the impact that this can have on all aspects of their life

Reflect upon how we interact with these children and consider if we need to modify our actions

Explore practical strategies that can be used, both at home and at school, to support interaction

Look at a range of practical resources that will both support and record any interventions that you introduce

Target Audience All Early Years setting and school staff as well as other professionals working with children and young people who appear withdrawn and reluctant communicators. Parents will also be invited to attend this workshop.

Workshop objectives Children can experience trauma as the result of a range of negative life events, these are usually referred to as Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE). As educators we seek to support children experiencing obvious trauma, to lessen its impact on their learning and their long term wellbeing. Participants will consider how we support young people for whom trauma is part of their everyday lived reality. We will look at how can we seek to create environments that enable children to develop coping strategies that will reduce their vulnerability to common adverse experiences including divorce, deprivation, prejudice and bereavement. Workshop content In this half-day workshop participants will:

Consider what constitutes an ACE and explore the potential long term impact of these experiences for children and young people

Consider ways to identify children at risk of ACE and consider the impact of these experiences on their engagement, learning and social development in school settings

Consider how early intervention can seek to address the effects of ACE and limit the impact

Consider practical strategies and approaches to improving pupil wellbeing and creating positive learning environments that help to mitigate the effect of trauma on development

PERCY

Percy is the STLS Wellbeing Support Dog. In his role he visits Early Years settings

and mainstream primary and secondary schools. Percy visits schools as part of

pupils’ personalised curriculums, as a reward for pupils and quite simply to add a feel

good element to the children and staff’s day. In 2019 Percy qualified as a Pets as

Therapy (PAT) dog. Percy is now two years old and has been a valued part of the

team since he was 12 weeks old.
