GWP in Africa working with AMCOW

• In 2007 GWP in Africa signed

an MoU with AMCOW

• 2008 the Sharma el Sheik

Declaration by AU Heads of

State

• 2009 – GWP and AMCOW

meeting in Abidjan.

AMCOW EXCO to

operationalise WACDEP

Page 4: Workshop WCP WACDEP Africa_andrew takawira_1 sep

WACDEP implements

commitments in the 2008

Sharm el Sheik

Declaration by the AU

Heads of State

And is central to the

delivery of climate related

objectives in the AMCOW

Triennial WorkPlan

Page 5: Workshop WCP WACDEP Africa_andrew takawira_1 sep

WACDEP builds on

the lessons learnt in

IWRM Planning

carried out from

2004 - 2009

Page 6: Workshop WCP WACDEP Africa_andrew takawira_1 sep

• WACDEP

contributes to the

implementation of

the GWP Strategy.

• Within the GWP

Global Climate

Change Operational

Strategy.

4 WACDEP COMPONENTS1. No/low Regret investments in Regional and National

developmentWith the following sub-componets:

• Contibute to Regional and Transboundary Cooperation

Through supporting regional organisations to

integrate water security and climate

resilience

• National developement and sector plans

Through supporting national organisations to

integrate water security and climate

resilience

• No/low regrets investments Support organisations to develop

investments which integrate water security

for climate resilience

• Project preparation and financing Support to strengthen preparing projects on

water security and climate resilience

2. Demostration local projects: focusing on innovative solutions and water-food-energy nexus

WP 3: No/low regret investments in water security

and climate resilience

To prioritise no/low regret

investments that provide

returns under a range of

current and future

scenarios (socio-

economic and climatic)

Page 19: Workshop WCP WACDEP Africa_andrew takawira_1 sep

Framework is key to

the identification and

prioritisation of

no/low regret

investments

Page 20: Workshop WCP WACDEP Africa_andrew takawira_1 sep

Investments will be for:

• Infrastructure (both natural and engineered

approaches)

• Ensuring reliable and timely information to

support decision-making

• Building institutional capacity to manage

water security in Africa

WP 3: No/low regret investments in water security

and climate resilience

Page 21: Workshop WCP WACDEP Africa_andrew takawira_1 sep

• Database on Project

Preparation Facilities (PPF)

for water management and

development

• 8 national workshops on

project preparation and

financing

• Pan-African Project

Preparation and Investment

Conference

LESSONS LEARNT FROM

IMPLEMENTATION

What will WACDEP deliver?

Page 29: Workshop WCP WACDEP Africa_andrew takawira_1 sep

KNOWLEDGE PRODUCTS

At early stage ensure

knowledge products are

developed

Page 30: Workshop WCP WACDEP Africa_andrew takawira_1 sep

Defining country and regional teams for implementation

At an early stage it is

important to build strong

implementation teams and

identify partners to work with

Page 31: Workshop WCP WACDEP Africa_andrew takawira_1 sep

New waters

• Deepening the

understanding of

developing investment

options

• Project Preparation and

Financing

• Working with different

partners at local level in

the demonstration projects
