South African mines have experienced aggressive load shedding and opera-tions across West Africa are dealing with utilities unable to meet their energy requirements affordably. Supply constraints are often exacerbated by high electricity rates which are driving mines to consider supplementing their power needs with renewables. This session will focus on how alternative energy solutions can play a role in addressing grid supply concerns and the practicalities around implementing these solutions.

14.30 ThE ECONOMICS OF BIOENERGy FOR MINESSelectra led the development of Harmony Gold’s groundbreaking bioenergy project on mine-impacted lands and is now working with a number of mines to develop biomass and biogas projects across Africa.
14.50 CASE STuDy: REALIZING FuEL COST-SAVINGS FROM BIOGASArcelorMittal’s Saldanha Works is currently implementing a biogas project to reduce its dependency on liquid petroleum gas. The steel mill currently consumes 13 000 tons of LPG per year and is aiming to save 16% through the use of biogas. An energy service company is currently building a bio-digester onsite and ArcelorMittal will purchase biogas through a take-or-pay agreement.
