Meditation Pavilion

Mouchão do Tejo, Portugal

Atelier Francisco and Manuel Aires Mateusvisiting critic: Luigi Snozzi

The course is focused on the design of a meditation space with no specific functional program. The spatial research was focused on the use of pure geometric forms, archetypes, to fit in the site in a timeless way. As well as meditation raises the question on the principles that surround us, this building wonders about the primi-tive forms that characterize architecture: the section of the house, the circular as a symbol of aggregation and the spiral symbol of an infinite path.

Small Theatre

Locarno, Switzerland

Atelier Quintus Millervisiting critic: Éric Lapierre

The theme of the project is the garden-house. The theater, located in a void of the city, has a totally introverted character. The audi-ence of the show enters in a microsystem detached from reality, a place in which spectators and actors can interact closely, as well as the interior of the building interact with the patios. The structure in rough concrete guarantee and emphasizes the atmosphere of a courtyard house.

Bath House

Budapest, Hungary

Atelier Valerio Olgiati visiting critic: Angela Deuber, Tom Schoper

The project deals with the relation between artefact and nature. The function of the thermal bath is reduced to a minimum, a single public pool placed below a garden. These two realities are put in communication through a hole in the slab that brings hot steam from the bath to the garden. A circular space situated halfway be-tween the bath and the garden is a communal dressing room and closes the building to its surroundings.

Spiritual Path and Chapel

Lodrino, Switzerland

Atelier Francisco and Manuel Aires Mateus visiting critic: Gonçalo Byrne, Aurelio Galfetti, João Nunes

The site analysis highlights the uncontrolled urbanization of the Valle Riviera. To fight this statement the project must be respectful of the surroundings. The idea of the project is to link the existing church of Lodrino with an hypogean chapel through an existing path. The path and the chapel are joined by a relation of solid and void. The granitic material taken from the mountain to dig the chapel is re-used for paving parts of the path that need maintenance. Fourteen steps along the path mark the Stations of the Cross. The elevation of each step is covered with a brass plate engraved with the num-ber and the inscription of the respective station. Getting into the celebrative hypogean space we immerse ourselves in the dark and then rediscover the natural light through a crack in the mountain.

Memorial to the Church of the Virgin Mary

Valenza, Italy

Independent work

The project, commissioned by the pastor of the parish of N.S. della pietà in Valenza, involves the construction of a roof that shelters the outer corner of the church so that it can become a place of memory. Follow-ing a principle of simplicity, the structure consists of two walls supporting a flat roof. Under the roof two spaces are defined: the first one, where a wooden sculpture of the Madonna is placed, faces the opposite square; the second one is turned toward the side of the church, a sheltered corner suitable for prayer.
