What are seaweeds?

✔ Seaweeds are a diverse group of living beings.

✔They range from microscopic to macroscopic organisms.

✔Their structure vary from unicellular to pluricellular complex structures configuring tissues. We also have them from a size of micrometres to a full length of more than 20 metres.

✔They are autotrophic organisms, so their main duty is obtaining light from aquatic ecosystems and provide organic material to make it available for consumers.

Seaweeds relevance I.

•Oxygen producers.

• Primary growers and producers in food chain: -Phytoplacton: floating seaweeds in the sea or suspended freely into the sea. -Benthic seaweeds: They are located on sea depths.

Page 17: Workout: The unknown world of seaweeds.

Seaweeds relevance II

•Diatomic land: -Metal polishing. -Filter material. -Thermal insulation. -Biofertilizer.

Page 18: Workout: The unknown world of seaweeds.

Seaweeds relevance II

•Agar production (Gelidium, Graciliaria, Pterocladia, Ahnfeltia)

Seaweeds applications I

•Production of alginate by dun seaweeds: -Purifying and cleaning face/ body masks. -Odontological alginates.

Page 20: Workout: The unknown world of seaweeds.

Seaweeds applications II

• Production of: -Carrageenin (Gigartina stellata, Chondrus crisps, Euchema). -Jelling emulsifiables and thickening agents used by the pharmaceutical, chemical, photographic, food and beverage industries, as well as by the textile and leather manufacturing.

More uses of seaweeds II

• Vitamins A andD from diatom. They are concentrated in fish liver. They can be extracted for human consumption.

• Fertilizer. They are rich in nutrients, proteins and potassium. Phaeophytas.

• Composition: 30% seaweeds; Ascophylum nodosum, Laminaria bongardianay Macrocystis periferia. Citoquinas y giberelinas: 210 ppm.

Environmental applications of seaweeds.

•They produce pigments which are used in aquaculture. Astaxantina by pluvial Haematococcus.

•Pollution indicators. They remove inorganic nutrients and toxins in water treatment. Clorophytas.

Environmental applications of seaweeds II

•They produce toxins (dinoflagelics).

•Red tide by Gymnodium breve.

• Fish infection and production of neurotoxins by Pfiesteria piscicida.

Tutorial practice and Erasmus + visit to Spain.•Each student receives a a questionnaire to fulfill

with relevant information to classify a specific type of seaweeds.

•Afterwards, the teacher values this task and receives all questionnaires to classify them.

•Then, he or she to explain other students in his/ her class about his/ her single file.

•Then we had a practical lesson at researchers’ working field.

We organized a walk around “ La Caleta” beach to show teachers and students how this ecosystem works, as well as its benefits and importance.

We went on having a nice visit around Cadiz city, its most typical squares and streets as well as its botanical park “Genovés”.

We enjoyed a typical lunch at a Flamenco Leisure Asociation (Peña), where we even dare to take a photo at its stage (tablao).
