MY DEFINITION OF EDUCATION TECHNOLOGY
Education technology is the facilitation and integration of applications such as virtual classroom, discussion forums, online videos, interactive quizzes to assist in the students understanding and learning.
4
PRIMARY SCHOOL TECHNOLOGY LATE 80S Teachers used chalk boards as opposed
to whiteboards. We had one computer pool in the
primary school. Desktops computers were used by students.
Students were allowed to borrow the desktop computers to play games such as Granny’s Garden, Astro, Pacman
5
HIGH SCHOOL TECHNOLOGY EARLY 90S We hand computer pools and subjects were
available on how to use Office Works and Excel. Students work was saved on Floppy Disks. Teachers worked on whiteboards as opposed to
chalk boards. Borrowing books at the library weren’t
electronic at this stage. We needed to fill in the traditional library card.
6
UNIVERSITY TECHNOLOGY MID 90S Interactive whiteboards were
introduced. Lecturers still preferred to use overhead
projectors when conducting their classes.
No internet was available. Students work was saved on floppy
disks however there was a rapid serge in the use of CD ROM.
7
TECHNOLOGY AT WORK IN THE EARLY 2000 The use of the internet was very rare in
the work place. Was only used by the Executives.
It was not user- friendly. Search engines were very difficult to
navigate. Websites were very boring and basic. Even the use of emails were not greatly
used.
8
TECHNOLOGY CHANGES AT PRESENT Emails are used as the primary source to
correspond with people. Meetings are scheduled online. LearnOnline website are used as the main platform
were students can download information, materials and content of the unit.
Students must submit assignments online and teachers will only mark assignments electronically.
Interactive discussion forums and virtual classrooms are now available.
Students are using their smart phones and tablets to access all information including recorded lectures and tutorial classes.
9
HOW TECHNOLOGY CHANGED MY CAREER Electronic textbooks are probably the
biggest change in the classroom, bringing both advantages and disadvantages.
Virtual tutorial classes. Active discussion forums Recorded lecture videos Tablets, net-books, portable laptops
10
FUTURE VISION OF CLASSROOMS N THE FUTURE The workplace, schools and university buildings and
infrastructure will change to cater for wireless connection and also to make it more environmentally friendly.
Buildings will become more environmentally friendly with the greater use of solar panels, underground/controlled heating and better recycling facilities.
Since most resources will become electronic, libraries will become smaller. As a result more computer and technology rooms, can also be expected.
Technology is moving quickly, currently teachers are preparing students for jobs that may not exist yet. Technology is becoming a more popular method of teaching in schools.
11
CHALLENGES AND OBSTACLES The biggest challenge and obstacle
would have to be plagiarism and bullying online. These are growing concerns and stricter guidelines and regulations must be put in place.
The use of technology alongside traditional teaching methods supports flexibility and choice in the curriculum, and extends learning beyond the school environment.
12
CHALLENGES AND OBSTACLES I think we can all agree, that technology
will continue to be used in schools, and help future generations to reach their full potential.
Academics, stuff and students will need to continually be trained and retrained to sustain a vibrant and technologically changing society.
