Dear Parents/Carers,

We have produced this guide to support parents and carers of pupils using the VLE to complete work from home. The Heads of Year have spoken to a number of parents to check that the VLE is being used, and this guide responds to some of the queries and issues that have been raised.

“We only have one device that can be used for work, but three children need to use it so it is hard to complete all the work online” – we have created a timetable for each year group that can be found on the Year Group page. If a pupil knows which assignments to complete each day, they can collect the resources needed and in many cases complete work offline. Teachers are trying to consider this when setting work so that some tasks can be completed offline, therefore freeing up the device for othes to use.

“We don’t have a Microsoft Office package on our computer” – Staff will upload documents with the assignments as both Microsoft and PDF files. PDF files can be opened on any device however they cannot be edited. In this case, pupils can complete work offline on paper, take photograph and upload this when the assignment is handed in.

“I don’t know how to find the work for the week and when I ask my child they tell me it is all done” – this guide shows you how to view assignments and check how many have not been handeed in.

“My child is struggling with the workload, there seems to be a lot of work added every week” – moving to working from home has been a difficult adjustment for everyone in the school community. Using the suggested timetable should make the work more manageable and help pupils complete assignments on time. If you have any further concerns about your child’s wellbeing, please speak to the Head of Year as soon as possible.

“There are a lot of different systems being used and it is confusing” – the VLE is the central system where you can view all the work that is being set and upload completed work. Some subject areas use complimentary systems such as Google Classroom, GCSEPod, MathsWatch and Seneca Learning. These resources are excellent tools to support learning. Pupils still need to hand in the assignment on the VLE to show the teacher that they have completed the work.

“My child does not know how to upload work when they hand in an assignment” – see page 8 for instructions detailing how to do this

This guide covers using an internet browser such as Google to access the VLE and also using the downloadable APP to access the VLE. If your child is having any problems logging in to the VLE, please let your Head of Year know and our IT team will support you.

Thank you for your continued support

Logging in

The VLE can be found at https://www.stpetersbook.com, via a link on the school website or by downloading the MyFrog by Frog Education APP.

Pupils log in using their usual school log in details. Please let your Head of Year know if there are any issues with logging in.

When a pupil logs in, the VLE displays the dashboard, which is the pupil homepage.

Internet Browser view APP view

You can see the links to the different year group pages. The Head of Year is updating each page with a weekly assembly and important information.

Finding the weekly assignments

There is a calendar to show the pupils all the assignments set for this week. To find this click on MyData and select homework.

Internet Browser view APP view

The pupil then selects Homework from the drop down menu and you will be able to see the assignments. You may see a lot on Friday because this is when teachers set the deadline date, but work can be submit at any time in the week. You can look back at previous weeks using the date tool at the top.

You can also see the number of outstanding assignments. In the APP there is a button on the homepage called assignments that will show a list of all current and outstanding assignments. In an internet browser such as Google, there is a circle in the top right hand corner.

Red with a number shows how many outstanding assignments there are

Green with a tick shows all assignments have been handed in and work is up to date

Pupils should go back and ‘Hand in’ any old assignments they have not yet handed in. This will show you up to date assignment information.

Click on ‘Choose Files’ which will open your documents area on the computer. Find the file you want to upload and double click on it.

Uploading evidence to assignments

When the assignment is complete, evidence of the work can be uploaded to show what has been done. This is done using the purple tool at the bottom of the assignment. If the work is done on a computer, this must be saved in a place that it is easy to find. If the work is done offline, you can take a photograph of it and upload it in the same way. This may be easier to do via the Frog APP on a phone or tablet.

The pupil clicks upload shown at the bottom

You can upload more than one document to each assignment. You will see them listed as above. This printscreen shows an image and a word document uploaded as evidence of the completed work.

**If the assignment states that the work should be completed on GCSE Pod, Google Classroom, Seneca or MathsWatch, there will be no expectation that work will be uploaded to the VLE – Please read all the assignment information to be clear on what is expected for each assignment**

When the bar at the top turns green, click done.

Handing in work

The final stage is to hand in the assignment when it is complete.

The red button at the bottom of the page must be clicked to complete and hand in the assignment.

One final box will appear.

Finally, click Hand in. The assignment will disappear from the calendar and pupils can move on to another task.

When all tasks are complete, the calendar will be empty.

Use the slider to show how well the assignment was understood.

In ‘Your Comments’ pupils can write a WWW/EBI (What went well/Even Better If) to review and reflect on the work they have completed.
