HE TYRES of thousands of tractors from vintage and modern day machines will be rolling onto Newark

Showground in November to celebrate and display some of Britain’s key agri-cultural tools.The Midlands Machinery Show and the Newark Vintage Tractor and Her-itage Show will return to the show-ground attracting thousands of visitors later this year. Organisers of the show are urging people to book the dates in their diary early in order to not avoid missing this spectacle.Taking place on 23rd and 24th No-vember, the Midlands Machinery Show 2016 is a rapidly growing event for visitors and traders to brush shoul-ders with some of the key innovators in industry.Organised by the Newark and Not-tinghamshire Agricultural Society, already confirmed to exhibit this year

The Newark Vintage Tractor and Her-itage Show (12th and 13th November) is a two-day event showcasing close to 1,000 vintage machines either lovingly restored or in original condition. Act now on ‘mid-summer rise’ in sheep and the threat of lungworm in cattle

he latest NADIS Parasite Forecast sponsored by Merial Animal Health highlights the importance of taking an integrated approach to parasite control in lambs to

reduce the risk of disease now and later in the season; the importance of including rams in the overall parasite control strategy; and the risk of lungworm in cattle.“Given the high risk of nematodirosis in many regions of the UK this year, lambs grazing contaminated pastures will almost certainly have been treated, often with a Group 1 anthelmintic,” says Sioned Timothy, Veterinary Adviser for Merial Animal Health. “However, Group 1 products may not be as effective against other nematode species and additional treatments may be necessary to prevent disease, reduce the impact of worm burdens on growth, and minimise the number of eggs shed onto pasture.“The need for such treatments will depend on a number of factors including ewe anthelmintic treatment at lambing time, grazing conditions, stocking density and weather conditions over the coming weeks. It’s also

achieving expected growth rates is also increasingly carried out to maximise the benefits seen after treatment, and reduce unnecessary treatments.”Oramec® is a Group 3 anthelmintic which can be used for treating a wide variety of round worms, as well as lungworm and nasal bots in sheep.In cattle, lungworm may appear from June onwards in unvaccinated calves, those not subject to strategic worming programmes, and in naïve adults. Early signs include coughing and an increased respiratory rate. In some outbreaks losses due to severe respiratory disease can occur, but the major impact of lungworm is on growth, condition and productivity. “Cases of husk can be treated effectively with a long-acting wormer. Beef cattle and dairy youngstock can be treated with Ivomec Classic®, while Eprinexâ is suitable for use in lactating dairy cows. These products provide persistent activity for up to 4 weeks, and so prevents re-infection during this period, “ says Sioned, “A further important benefit of Eprinexâ in dairy cattle is its zero milk withhold, which means it

can be used during lactation without the need to discard milk.“Since the diagnosis of lungworm is

largely based on clinical signs, treatment should be given as soon as possible after diagnosis to minimise the impact of the parasite. Furthermore, although only a small number of animals may be showing signs of infection, all cattle in the herd are at risk as infection can spread quickly through the herd via pasture challenge. To reduce the impact of a drop in productivity, all cattle in the herd should be treated.”Strategic early season treatment of cattle will reduce the risk of parasitic disease due to nematodes throughout the grazing season, however it’s important to ensure that cattle remain set-stocked on the same pasture for the entire grazing system, or move to safe grazing such as silage aftermath to ensure season long control.

Safe grazing includes pasture not grazed by sheep last year, reseeded leys, and any ground not grazed by sheep until mid-summer such as aftermath, where parasite contamination from last year will have died off.Sioned says: “Safe pastures are an important component of your farm’s sustainable parasite control and should be used to best effect to reduce the parasite challenge posed to at-risk lambs, reducing reliance on wormers.“Taking an informed approach to treatment decisions will optimise parasite control whilst minimising selection for resistance, and potentially save money through fewer treatments. The use of faecal worm egg counts to assess whether groups of lambs require worming is one proven approach.

Big plans ahead for ‘Model Combines for Charity’f you had told Sam Snellin, Trevor Garrett and Sammy Watson that, years down the line, they would be at-tempting a ‘first of its kind’ model display of over 180 combines, they would have laughed at you, but that is

exactly what they have planned later this year.Having grown up on farms and later becoming farmers themselves, the three friends from County Down, Northern Ireland, grew up surrounded by agricultural machinery, and that love of machines has stayed with them ever since.After having a heart attack nearly 10 years ago, Sam wanted to give something back to the Northern Ireland Chest, Heart & Stroke char-ity, which helped him during his recovery, and in 2009 he started the North Down Farm and Construction Show in Bangor as a fundrais-er. However, it failed to attract the numbers of visitors he hoped to get. And so, after four mildly successful shows there, he moved it to the La Mon Hotel & Country Club, changed the day from a Saturday to a Wednesday night, and when a few hundred people began flood-ing in he soon realised that he was on to a winner. It was during that time that he struck up friendships with Trevor and Sammy, and the three men have since partnered in their model display shows.All of the men agree that the core of their enjoyment is having the opportunity to recreate scenes from their own lives on the farm, while at the same time giving others enjoyment by looking at them.

“I restarted collecting from childhood days and really like collecting vintage Britains from the pre-war era, lead animals, figures, 70s, 80s and 90s models,” Trevor said. “In fact, one of my displays includes all of these eras up to present day machines.” He added that he is also interested in scratch building and conversions, such as threshing machines, slurry stores, tractor vintage reaper, milking robot and round roof barns, to name a few.Sammy has owned model Britains since he was a ‘wee fella.’ “I never lost the interest in the models and over the years I have built up my collection,” he said. “My collection is made up of mainly scratch built models and conversions from local scratchbuilders and conversion-ists. John Deere tractors make up the majority of my collection.”Similarly, Sam’s love of them goes back to his childhood days, “play-ing with models in a sand pit. The original farm that I grew up on I have built to exact 1:32 scale with every detail on it.” Sam can also boast of having Northern Ireland’s largest model JCB collection, with 40 of them permanently on display in his home but another eight boxes stored away for shows.However, for Sam, there is a bit more to the hobby. “The enjoyment is meeting different people every year from the same walks of life, doing the same things as us: building models,” he said. “For the last few years at the La Mon we’ve brought in young fellows - seven and eight year olds - with their wee farm displays that they’ve had in

Big plans ahead for ‘Model Combines for Charity’Sam believes this is the first time that a display of this kind on such a large scale has been attempted and they are eager to get the word out that all collectors can be a part of it by lending them their 1:32 scale combines. “At the minute we’re aiming for 180 model combines,” Sam said, “but if we get more we won’t turn anybody away. We’re going to keep spare matting at the show on the day for anybody who wants to bring some.”While there will be 55 display tables at the show, there will be a section dedicated to the special attraction. And while there are still a few months left to go before the big day, the men have already re-ceived a boost in the numbers thanks to David King, who is regard-ed as having one of the biggest model collections in Ireland. To enter any number of com-bines, which will all be returned after, it costs £10 for the first model and £2.50 for every subsequent one. The cutoff for entrants is 31st August. You can also contribute a combine on the day but it needs to be with the men by 1pm at the latest.To date, the shows have raised over £3,000 for Northern Ireland Chest, Heart and Stroke, and all proceeds from 16th November will go the charity.

They’re the future for us, which we get a lot of enjoyment out of.”And seeing the reactions of the children as they walk around is also priceless for them. “The look on the kids’ faces when they come in and see all this is great,” Sam said. “You hear them saying, ‘I have that in my house, I have that in my yard, my daddy’s got that.’”With agriculture playing such a large role in Northern Ireland’s economy, it is no surprise that the majority of visitors to the model shows are from farming backgrounds, and as word has spread, so too have their popularity. “It’s getting bigger too,” Sam said.The men visited County Louth in 2012, where the ‘Combines for Charity’ Guinness World Record attempt was underway, during which 208 combines worked together and cut a crop of winter bar-ley, and taking the record in the process. Inspired by that event, in July last year, Trevor suggested to Sam that they could try something similar, except using 1:32 scale models, and that was when the idea soon became a reality.On Wednesday 16th November this year they will be attempting the ‘Model Combines for Charity’ and, as Sam said, they have the sup-port of the original farmers behind the 2012 record. Brothers Tony and Philip Brady, who organised the original ‘Combines 4 Charity’ will be taking part in the model show.

New Education Website helps children understand where grain based food comes from

he National Association of British and Irish Millers (nabim) and AHDB Cereals and Oilseeds have recently launched their newly

designed and upgraded website, offering UK teachers free access to the very latest, national curriculum linked, lesson plans and resources exploring farming, food and healthy eating.To mark the launch, Grain Chain has commissioned a new, double sided, pictorial, education poster to help children understand where our food comes from. Entitled ‘Where does bread come from’, one side of the poster is for primary and the other for secondary schools and can be ordered free of charge from the website, http://ahdb.cmail19.com/t/r-l-slkco-hlhitdlkul-f/Priya Nicholas from nabim said: “These new posters are a great and simple way for teachers to show children where bread comes from and to help them understand the processes involved in making bread.”The updated Grain Chain website

now offers a range of new classroom resources that can be easily downloaded and will help teachers deliver effective lessons covering the subjects of Nutrition, Cooking, Food Provenance and Food Science. Simon Gray from the Food Teachers Centre, said: “The Grain Chain website is a ‘Fantastic’ resource for all teachers whether or not they are experienced, newly qualified or in training. In fact anyone involved in educating our young people would find this resource very useful. The site looks amazing, it is easy to navigate and there are lots of well thought out resources that will help any teacher involved in food related education in our primary and secondary schools to deliver really interesting and engaging lessons. You can simply download the lesson plans and classroom resources and off you go; what could be easier?”The Grain Chain project also offers Continuous Professional Development (CPD) training for teachers and will hold its next training session, focussing

on high-skill bread making and finishes, in Manchester on 11 June.Priya explains: “The courses are designed to help students achieve the best marks they can by providing teachers with the necessary skills, knowledge and expertise they need to deliver first class lessons. Home owners could boost the value of their property by 21 per cent by adding a loft conversion, a study shows.Putting in an attic room has been found to have the potential to add £37,000 to the value of a home, while just adding an extra bedroom can equate to

N an extra £20,000, according to research by the Nationwide Building Society.Based on the average house price of £178,124 in the first quarter of 2014 according to Nationwide’s price index, this would mean that an extra bathroom could add £8,900 to the value of a home.Boosting floor space by 10 per cent could add a similar amount of value to adding another bathroom.

Four Rangers for Belvoir Estate

The end of April saw a charity clay pigeon shoot held in the grounds of Belvoir Castle, to raise money for the Belvoir Cricket and Countryside Trust

he quality and quantity of forages produced on the farm will have a major bearing on farm

profitability” says Graham Ragg, Mole Valley Farmers Senior Agronomist and Product Manager.Grass is by far the biggest ‘crop’ in terms of acreage in the UK and needs to be nurtured to realise its tremendous potential on livestock farms. The starting point is to look closely at the growing medium, the soil. Farmers wanting to improve grassland performance should review the texture of the soil; remedy drainage or panning issues as well as measuring soil nutrient levels. The aim should be to create free draining soils which have a healthy microbial and earthworm activity. Soils are a living medium which need to supply water, nutrients and air to growing roots to power plant development. Grass is no different to any other crop in requiring the

right

balance of nutrients for

optimum growth. pH levels in the UK

on grassland currently average 5.5 pH and at

these levels up to 35% of nutrients are locked up in

the soil and not released to the plant. This is a massive waste of nutrients already in the soil reserves, nutrients in applied organic manures and nutrients from bagged fertilisers. The first priority must be to lift soil pH’s to around a minimum of 6.0

pH for grassland. This will also help to preserve the sward with more productive perennial ryegrasses and clover.Phosphate and Potash levels should be a minimum of 2 index (satisfactory) but again over 50% of soils would be either low or deficient for these major nutrients. By measuring the levels on your farm you can direct valuable slurry of FYM to the right fields to bring levels up or decide whether it is worth investing in additional bagged fertiliser to bring phosphate and potash levels up.Sulphur is the fourth major nutrient after N, P, K to boost yields and protein content of silage grass. On second and subsequent cuts it is worth buying a fertiliser with additional sulphur. In

sulphur responsive areas yield increases of 30% can be

achieved.Nitrogen is the main driver to

increasing yields so long as pH and the

other major nutrients are sufficient. Nitrogen can come from FYM, slurry, fixation from clover or bagged fertiliser. On low stocking density farms nitrogen can be provided from organic manures and clover alone. However on more intensive farms bagged nitrogen still offers the farmer to maximise the return on the most expensive resource, land on the farm. On intensive units, particularly dairy where a large number of units have cows inside all year around or for forage for winter feeding on more grazing based systems, having enough quality silage is essential. Up to 300 units of nitrogen per acre, applied through the season will maximise the cheapest feed on the farm, grass. Even at current fertiliser prices using optimum amounts will reduce overall

feeding costs on the farm and reduce the need to buy supplementary feed.Measuring the performance of grass through the growing season and from year to year on each field will help to see which fields are performing and which need improving. The reasons for poor performance could be numerous, but one of the main concerns could be poor grass species increasing in composition of the sward over the years. Most sown swards will diminish to around 50% sown species after 5 years. So assessing sward composition should be done on a regular basis and a reseeding programme undertaken where possible. In areas where conventional reseeding is impractical overseeding with grass and or clover is becoming increasingly popular. Overseeding tends to be more successful on ‘open leys’ with bare soil patches. Pelleted clover seed is now available to broadcast on the surface of grassland as a way of introducing more clover into a sward. The clay and polymer coating on the clover seed acts as a growing medium in the early stages of germination to aid establishment.Weed and pest control, either at the establishment phase of a new reseed or established leys is also important in getting optimum economic performance.In theory it would be great if when you did a new reseed you got 100% of the sown species to establish. In

practice this is at best 90% and at worst about 50%. This can be as a result of pests such as slugs, frit fly or rabbit damage. In high risk situations an integrated approach to control using cultural and agrochemical control is advisable. For instance slug damage can be reduced by ensuring seedbeds are rolled well and this will reduce slug movement in the soil. However slug pellets may need to be considered, particularly in wet seasons or where direct drilling where slugs are prone to following the slits and eating seeds and seedlings. Frit fly attack can also cause considerable damage, particularly in autumn reseeds and a Chlorpyrifos type spray should be used in high risk situations or the first sign of attack. Broadleaved weeds in established grassland such as docks, thistles, nettles, buttercup, dandelions and ragwort can cause large yield and quality reductions on silage leys. It is adviseable to control docks between cuts, allowing a regrowth of two weeks before applying a proven dock herbicide e.g. Doxstar Pro. Clover safe dock sprays are available but are generally less effective at controlling docks.The prompt application of fertilisers between each cut of silage is important in encouraging quick regrowth and maximising yields of silage. Each 1 day delay of aftercut fertiliser will reduce the subsequent cut silage yield by 2% so a weeks delay could lead to a 14%

decisions in determining silage quality. To achieve 75 D-value silage you need to have a good understanding of the heading dates of the grasses in your purchased seed mixtures or swards. First cut for instance should be around the end of April to mid-May depending on geographic location and subsequent cuts, at 6 week intervals for Perennial Ryegrass and 5 week intervals for Italian Ryegrass. A clear plan is therefore important and one which should be shared with your contractor to ensure cutting takes place as much to plan as possible. Other considerations could be the chop length required for the silage, liaising with your nutritionist is advisable as they should know the other elements of the diet and what length will be complementary.Choice of silage additive is also important. Only use a proven product with animal performance benefits and one that stabilises a good lactic fermentation. An additive can reduce fermentation losses of untreated silage which are typically 15% to half that figure. This will easily justify the cost of application and ensure you have a palatable silage to feed.After having made a large amount of quality silage the job is only half done. The next problem is how to get economic performance from it through your stock. This is where a trusted nutritionist in the team is important to realise the silages full potential.

There may be a few situations where only medium quality D-value silage is the aim for example dry cows or suckler cows where you don’t want animals to put on excessive weight. However for high yielding cows and beef finishing aiming for up to 75 D-value (12.0 ME) silage is the aim on most units.Where different levels of quality silage are targeted, big bale silage can have an important place in ensuring the right stock receive the right quality of forage. However by for the majority of silage made in the UK is in the form of clamp silage. Clamps need to be thoroughly inspected well before silage making to repair any damage and ensure it is structurally sound. Silage sheets need to be purchased in advance of silage making and the relatively newly introduced clear plastic cling film is a well worth investment to ensure air does not enter the clamp. The cling film is placed over the top of the pit underneath the black sheet. The black sheet needs to be weighted down adequately with an increasing amount of farmers using the heavy gauge woven sheeting rather than the more traditional car tyres.Cutting date is one of the biggest
