Introduction:
Syracuse currently has approximately 1,600 vacant homes, with about 50 to 60 units being demolished each year. Deconstruction, an alternative to demolition, offers economical, equitable, and ecological advantages. The goal of this project is to describe the state of deconstruction in Syracuse and to identify policy, workforce, and other barriers for implementation.
Conclusions:
• Implementing hybrid deconstruction, rather than stick-deconstruction, would be more economically competitive compared to traditional demolition
• Deconstruction companies, crews, and processes must be more fully developed in order for the City of Syracuse to be able to make strides in the deconstruction industry.
• SUNY ESF plans to “take-down” a city block of units within 1 to 2 years. President Neil Murphy has verbally committed to deconstruction; this project offers many opportunities for research and capacity building.
• Local markets for deconstruction materials are in their infancy. However, adequate infrastructure exists, and with additional development and investment, deconstruction in Syracuse is poised for growth.
