Workflow Guide for QuibiCreating content in Premiere Pro for delivery to QuibiQuibi is a new video platform designed for short form content on mobile devices. By rotating their phones, viewers can switch between two video streams: horizontal 16:9 and vertical video. Content creators can leverage the two streams functionally — by optimizing their videos for the two viewing formats — and creatively, to enhance their storytelling. Premiere Pro is an ideal production platform for creating and delivering content to Quibi.

This guide explains the deliverable requirements and outlines the workflow in Premiere Pro for creating content for Quibi, including advanced features like Auto Reframe, which automates the process of extracting alternate versions of your sequences for vertical video.

Creating for the Quibi platformAs part of their digital platform, Quibi has created a new “dual asset” format for mobile streaming which allows the end user to dynamically switch between landscape and portrait viewing modes as they rotate their device. Quibi specifications require two master files for delivery: 1 x landscape (16:9) and 1 x portrait (9:16) version.

For capture, this means framing content a little more conservatively, anticipating the vertical crop and adding a little extra title-safe and action-safe space. For editors, post-production will typically require two additional steps: reversioning content for a different aspect ratio and reviewing the two streams side-by-side for quality control before final export. This can be accomplished efficiently in Premiere Pro and creators and studios who wish to deliver content for Quibi can develop their pipeline accordingly.

The Quibi workflow in Premiere ProDepending on your content, creating dual assets could become a time-consuming process. Auto Reframe in Premiere Pro allows you to accelerate a significant portion of that work. Using position and scaling, graphics and titles can be quickly resized for the new aspect ratio. Creating a multi-aspect viewing sequence allows you to check your results and custom Export presets streamline final output. Quibi recommends that source material is captured horizontally at a 4k resolution, which providings additional flexibility for cropping and repositioning your video, especially within the vertical frame.

Keep it simpleBegin Quibi projects editing in the traditional horizontal format in 1920x1080. This allows you to focus on the narrative in your familiar workflow before moving to the vertical version.

Import your media assets into a newly created Premiere Pro project. Organise the content into working folders and generate a new sequence by right clicking in the project browser window and selecting New item > Sequence.

To save the settings as a sequence preset, navigate to the Save Preset’ button and enter the name for the preset, along with any additional descriptive details.

This gives you a Horizontal 16:9 sequence with the correct settings and are ready to start editing.

Easily modify graphics for different aspect ratiosThe titles and graphics that you use or create during your edit will be easy to modify for your vertical version. You can resize or reposition your graphics and titles manually on screen or by adjusting positioning and scaling in the Effects Controls panel.

Creating vertical output using Auto Reframe:Once the Horizontal edit has picture locked, you can focus on generating a new vertical cut from the existing timeline.

Auto Reframe allows you to create that version, while keeping your video and audio elements in sync. Auto Reframe uses Adobe Sensei machine learning technology to analyses your sequence and repositioning the video within the new aspect ratio.

To apply Auto Reframe, highlight the Sequence, right click and select Auto Reframe Sequence.

Premiere Pro provides a choice of aspect ratios. Select (9x16) from the Aspect Ratio drop down list and match all other settings to the screen shot below. Then click Create

Auto Reframe analyses the sequence, and a new 9x16 vertical sequence is generated inside an Auto Reframed Sequences folder in the Project panel. Review the 9x16 Auto Reframe results. If needed, you can and use the Transform controls to adjust Position keyframes for additional fine-tuning.

Extending storytellingThe Quibi platform introduces interesting creative options for vertical delivery. For example, the vertical view could be presented as a split screen, single or two shot positioning or even an entirely different, vertical-friendly camera angle, giving the viewer new ways of watching video.

Creating a review timeline for review and approvalA crucial goal of the creative edit is ensuring that the content is editorially and technically excellent and meets Quibi’s delivery specifications.

Using nested sequences and video layers allows editors to compile horizontal and vertical cuts on a single 4K timeline. This provides a reliable side-by side review with the ability to quality check each frame for audio sync and editorial continuity.

To create the 4K review sequence, use the recommended settings below:

Nest each Horizontal and Vertical cut by selecting all clips on the sequence. Right click and choose Nest.

Copy across each nested instance to the 4k timeline and arrange on two separate video layers.

Use the in-built motion effect controls to reposition and adjust each view as required.

The sequence is now ready for review and quality checking. If further picture changes are required after the initial review, make those edits on the original timelines for both the horizontal and vertical versions to preserve frame accuracy.

Refer back to your 4K review sequence to quality check the changes.

Exporting finished content for deliveryOnce the quality check is complete you are ready to export your finished content. For delivery, Quibi accepts two digital master formats in either ProRes 444 XQ or DNXHR 444. Each file can be easily exported out of Premiere Pro by right clicking the sequence and selecting Export Media.

To export as DNXHR 444 use the settings below on either Windows or macOS systems:

For Horizontal delivery:

For Vertical delivery:

For both delivery formats, ensure that the stereo audio track is set as PCM Uncompressed and the Sample Rate is 48000Hz.

Quibi technical specificationsUnderstanding Quibi’s core delivery principles is a key first step in ensuring that content produced is of the highest visual quality.

For initial video capture, Quibi recommends shoots native 4K with 15% extra framing to anticipate vertical reframing. Shooting the highest resolution possible, allows for greater flexibilty within the edit, in particular when repositioning and cropping images within a 9x16 frame.

For captions, lower thirds, and other title elements Quibi requires a title safe margin of 82% for both horizontal and vertical delivery.

A required action safe of 89% is is especially important for vertical output as it allows audiences to focus on the main areas of interest within each shot increasing the level of engagement for the user when viewing on their mobile device.
