Hospital Design in BeijingAdvisor: Prof. Lv FuxunMar.2009 ~ May.2009

CONTOURING GREENIntroductionThe project locates in Xizhi-men Railway Station, which is one of the busiest and most crowded places in Beijing. The project is to build a new inpatient building for Peking Uni-versity Hospital. An old inpatient building and an outpatient build-ing exist and live little place for the new one.

ConceptThe design uses the form of terrace to create outdoor space on each stair of the building. It also functionally separates intermediate care unit into two parts. The connection between the two parts provides a great view of the sunset of Beijing, where everybody could feel peace.

Concept In this project, we have a strong willing to build a man-made central park in Beijing. To fulfil the goal, we try to con-struct several huge green boxes as the core of design, in order to create some green islands in the city. The boxes not only have the function of skirt buildings, but establish a 3~4 floors floating gar-den. We try to construct a set of structures outside of the buildings. The structures could be some trees and plants, or open spaces, or even air corridors.

ProcessingThis studio is held between Architecture and Landscape Architecture Department of RISD, and between graduate and undergraduate students. Just like the studio name, the studio is to introduce a design priciple, or a method. The studio begins with a rope as a prototype. The individuals need to transform it hundreds of times based on some types of theories, and finally construct a building on a site. The transforamation could be divided into two processes. Before Mid-term, the first process is to abstract the rope, and transform it into an enclosure. The second half part is to capture some moments during the transformation and create a building which has certain functions

During the first half part of design, I capture a moment which happens in the transformations. By bending my unit with different forces, there are different forms and spaces appearing, and I use the nature of the fold as my inspiration of the building.

This is my thesis project, which relates with human experiences in a landscape. When there are too many discontinuities in a current existing site, a continu-ous feature can be established to create uniformity in the site with a simple gesture. The gesture here is a series of methods that can generate a geometrical framework based on spatial information of the site, in order to establish a new structure, which supports the existing urban structure and reinforce it.

The whole project is a series of studio work, we used many software and techniques to record an old village in China.

1. Ancient village mapping and drawing (measured and AutoCAD drawings)2. Photography recording3. Modelling (3Ds-max modelling with all texture hand drawing)4. Virtual world creating and experiencing (using Vrml software)5. DV making (3ds-max rendering and Aftereffect cutting)

This pendant is dedicated to my mom. In Chinese tradition, Kite represents a son travelling or residing in a place far away from home. The main body is a shape of Phoenix, which is a character of my mother’s first name, FENG, and which can represent me, who is studying outside the country, trying to hone myself and expecting to fly one day. The hang buckle is a shape of kite wire wheel, which means I am the kite which wheel is still in my mother’s hand. The Phoenix and the buckle are connected by a chain, so that when it is not been worn, it is like a kite flying in the sky.
