2016 AP Euro Summer Work You will need to read Niccolo Machiavelli’s The Prince and answer the following questions. Work must be hand written (no typed pages). 1. Why did Machiavelli write The Prince? 2. Name 3 reoccurring themes in the book. 3. Describe the role of armies according to Machiavelli. 4. Why does Machiavelli say that it is better for a Prince “to be both loved and feared?” Is it possible for a Prince to be both? Explain. 5. In Chapter 20, what 3 bits of advice does Machiavelli give the Prince? 6. In Chapter 21, what must a Prince do to be esteemed? 7. List and describe 10 characteristics of a Machiavellian ruler. 8. As you perceive (understand) it, describe what a state might be like under a Machiavellian ruler. Students will also read the first chapter of our class book and complete the following… 1. Study Guide-define or identify each term or person, and write complete short answer questions. Do this on a separate sheet of paper 2. Complete each worksheet for all three sections. You can answer directly on the worksheets utilizing the front and back, or do it on separate sheets of paper. If you do use separate sheets of paper, make sure you clearly title each sheet to help me identify what section it is. Also, please make sure your name is on every page. This is all due the first day of class in August! A short multiple choice quiz/test will be given the first week and will be part of your first semester grade. No typed pages will be accepted. 10% will be taken off for everyday the work is late.
