To balance work and family … friends..means to give yourself

equally to both areas of your life and not neglect one over the

other. Creating this balance does not always come naturally and

needs organization and discipline.

Any balancing formulae?• No single formula for attaining a balanced life.

• It is a personal decision how one combines their career, spouse/significant other, children, friends and self into an integrated whole.

• Separate “self” and “work”

Page 5: Work and familty balancing 2

Any balancing formulae?• Adopt some of the same skills and strategies

you use at work for achieving a satisfying, fulfilling and well-balanced life both personally and professionally

– Planning,

– Organizing,

– Communicating,

– Setting limits and

– Delegating

Page 6: Work and familty balancing 2

Planning: Establish your priorities

• Decide what takes precedence when both areas of your life need nurturing at one time, thus creating a conflict. Baby is ill and report required urgently!!!!!

– Neglect one to take care of the other?

Page 7: Work and familty balancing 2

Planning: Establish your priorities

• Determine which one is the most pressing at the time.

– Urgent and important

– Important

– Urgent but not important

Page 8: Work and familty balancing 2

Planning: Establish your priorities

• If your child is sick but you have to go to work, you should choose to stay with your child because the sickness is more pressing than a regular day at work.

• But:

– does the boss see it this way?

– Is there an alternative care programe?

Page 9: Work and familty balancing 2

Prioritizing?

• Compare preparing for a scheduled meeting and a family day out at the beach.

Page 10: Work and familty balancing 2

– Don't beat yourself up if you find that a work obligation conflicts with a family commitment.

– Decide which should take precedence by determining the significance of each, and then learn

from the experience.

List of family goals and deadline

• Rank family goals and objectives with time lines.

– When is the holiday to village home

– Birthdays

– home improvement project

• By writing these goals down and scheduling them, you are committing yourself to doing them.

Page 12: Work and familty balancing 2

Flex work changes with family needs

• When there is room for more time off work then stay with your family because work allows it, -advantage of that.

• When work is consuming then look for a compensation immediately available to regain your family and career balance as soon as possible.

• Ensure moments of imbalance are compensated accordingly

Page 13: Work and familty balancing 2

Time management• Develop your time-management abilities so that

you are able to give your family their due time.

• Time-management skills also means learning how end your day at work and begin your day at home.

• Learn how to say "no" when a work colleague asks you to help on a project that you just cannot fit into your schedule

Page 14: Work and familty balancing 2

Communication • Keep the communication lines open with your

spouse, and don't be afraid to voice your concerns about the lack of imbalance between home and work.

• Don't fail to listen when your spouse accuses and complains about neglect

• Work and home balance should be respected by both parties in order to be successful.

Build a Support Network

• Between work and family, surprises are inevitable.

– Can a neighbor collect a child from school?

– Can children and other family work as a team

– Create back-up and emergency plans; always have a contingency.

– Find a reliable child care

Avoid a guilty mind

• Determine Your Own Standards

• Get rid of the notion of being a perfectionist.

• Make compromises--figure out where the best places to make the compromises are without short-changing yourself, your spouse, your children, your boss, etc.

• Live by your own standards

Page 17: Work and familty balancing 2

Create Time for Yourself

• Being a good parent, partner and professional means being good to yourself first.

• Find ways to relax, relieve tension and minimize stress. Taking some time off for yourself will not only benefit you, but it will benefit your work and family tremendously, as well!

Page 18: Work and familty balancing 2

Get Organized

• Set priorities, work smarter not harder, delegate -and really let go!.

• Create lists and save them for re-use. Keep a main calendar centrally located to post everyone's activities.

Page 19: Work and familty balancing 2

Achieve an Integrated Life

• Keep things in perspective. Create harmony in your life--a mixture of work, family and friends.

• Remember, there is no single formula for balancing work and family. It is a personal decision how one combines spouse, children and career.
