Akabe – Who, what, where?

Maybe you have noticed them, maybe you have already met them: the boys and girls of two Akabe groups or one of the Akabe service team members. Time for Words of Imagination to tell you everything you need to know about Akabe.

Akabe is a special branch in Belgian scouting that caters to scouts with physical or mental disabilities. Akabe has a long tradition, there have been groups for over 40 years. Akabe participants and staff took part in the 2011 World Scout Jamboree and the both Flamborees.

At JamBe, Akabe is again represented by participants and IST. At Magnatio, you can meet the ‘Sjoetka’ group, while Somnius has the ‘Tinamoe’ group. There are five Akabe service team members who are integrated in different workgroups. All of those are accompanied by a ‘buddy’, who helps them enjoy the camp, perform their tasks and make new friends. We asked some leaders, buddies and Akabe scouts how they are enjoying the JamBe.

Unforgettable“JamBe is exhausting, but our participants are enjoying it so much, it’s all worth it”, says a Tinamoe leader. “This is a unique opportunity for our scouts to meet new people and new cultures.” Apparently, making new friends hasn’t been a problem, some scouts have even been learning new languages. Julie writes down all new words and also has a list of words to help her while swapping. Casper is proud to show us his new badges which he swapped with his new friends. “I really like swapping, but all the activities have been great, this is an unforgettable experience!”

But working with disabled scouts isn’t always easy. “The rain, the heat and the scale of the JamBe can be very stressful”, a leader explains. Getting everyone to go to sleep at night can be a challenge as well: “No one wants this camp to end, so no one wants to go to sleep!” This probably sounds familiar, after all, Akabe participants are scouts like you and me.

Akabe staffAt JamBe, Akabe staff are a part of the logistics team, work in the kitchen, take pictures… This is unique in world scouting, and the staff and their buddies are proud to take part in the JamBe. Despite the challenges, the Akabe staff members are having the time of their lives. “Helping out at JamBe is amazing,” Emiel tells us enthusiastically. “All these experiences, all these happy scouts… I want to keep doing this for the rest of my life!”

Véronique is looking forward to the Mass game: “This will be so cool! A thousand scouts all together, I can’t wait!” Veerle liked the ropes course the best and Tanja likes nothing more than seeing everyone with a smile on their face when she carries around the mail. Mathias is proud to see his photos in the newspaper every day. Their buddies are equally enthusiastic: “It isn’t always easy, but it’s totally worth it!”, says Kamil.

Akabe, c’est oké !Akabe, c’est une branche spéciale de Scouts en Gidsen Vlaanderen. On y accueille des jeunes qui ont un handicap mais qui veulent quand même participer au jeu de scoutisme. Ici, pendant JamBe2013, il y a deux groupes Akabe qui sont présents : Sjoetka d”Ostende à Magnatio et Tinamoe de Nijlen à Somnius. Ils se sont déjà bien amusés et leurs activités préférées jusque maintenant étaient swapper, rencontrer du nouveau monde, apprendre quelques mots en anglais ou en espagnol, la bataille d”eau qui a eu lieu spontanément pendant Create2Impress...

En plus des deux groupes, il y a aussi 5 collaborateurs Akaba parmi les IST. Ils participent dans les équipes de communication, collaborateurs, nourriture, magasin, logistique, … Eux aussi ont des moments moins réussis, mais il y a plus d’accomplissements d’équipe ou personnels: voir sa photo dans le journal, entendre “merci” après avoir distribué le courrier, rigoler et s’amuser comme des fous… C’est vraiment du scoutisme !

Wat betekent uniform voor je? What does (wearing) your uniform mean to you?

Timothee, France« Grace à l’uniforme on voit les différences entre les troupes et les pays. Je ne trouve pas que c’est bizarre de devoir porter un uniforme. Je trouve que, il y en a qui on un foulard uni, et ça c’est moins sympa. Car, si on veut swapper c’est un peu moins drôle que les foulards multicolores. »

Shannon, UK “I feel proud to wear my uniform, because it means I can represent my unit and where I come from to all the international groups. Thanks to my uniform everyone can see where I am from. Some of the uniforms at the JamBe look amazing.

Yeah, I love the Israeli uniform because it is very smart . They have different uniforms for different occasions and then every other group has a different uniform to represent where they come from.”

Willem IST België“My uniform represents my life as a scout. I’ve had it for many years and it shared all my experiences. The uniform also gives a sense of unity, you’re not a scout without it. I also like the difference in uniform traditions, like how countries in the south have lighter ones. A Belgian uniform is strong and not fancy. We always wear it, not just for ceremonies. It has to be resilient when playing games and you’re proud when it is dirty, because that means the game went well!”

One of the evening activities at JamBe 2013 is an international scouting classic. A campfire is all you need to get everyone in the mood for songs from around the world. Some scouts and guides were, as it should be, very well prepared. The Dutch scouts had all brought camping chairs and were by far the most comfortable. “We use these a lot. It’s better than sitting on the floor for two hours”, one of them explained. “My chair usually lasts only a year, that’s how often I use it!”

Chronos was clearly in the mood for a party. When we arrived at the campfire site, sub camp staff Marco and a Catalonian colleague had everyone peeling, cutting, eating and digesting bananas. The Danish guides took over with another banana song, which had everyone going bananas!

A Flemish song proved to be a bigger challenge, but everyone tried to make something out of it (for those who are still wondering, it was about eating a chicken). We asked the Thai scouts if they knew any of these songs. “The banana songs we recognize, but the other ones are more difficult”, their leader told me. “Maybe we’ll try a Thai song.”

After a while, the Thai guides mounted the “stage” and gave Chronos an exclusive show. A campfire song and dance from Thailand had everyone cheering. Singing along proved to be too difficult, but it was great to see Chronos’s enthusiasm. When we left the campfire, the party was far from over!

Scout & kiss

• Latexgirl kan niet kiezen tussen de twee jongens, J en R. Het is een dilemma. De ene is charming en de andere is lief. Er geeft er eentje stille hints maar die ziet ze precies niet. Wij wel.• Isa heeft twee Spaanse hotties, en ook ne Franse. Maar ook zij kan niet kiezen. Shame.

Brandweer

Onweer voorspeld! Dat was het grote gerucht dat gisteren doorheen heel JamBe 2013 zoemde. Uiteindelijk werden we aangenaam overspoeld door een verfrissende plensbui en was het onweer voor andere regionen in het land. Maar, wat gebeurde er achter de schermen?

“Wij stonden natuurlijk klaar om uit te rukken”, zeggen onze fiere brandweermannen. Net net als tijdens de openingshow waren ze nu ook weer op tijd om in te grijpen. “Dit keer moesten we geen liefdesbrand blussen,” aldus Wasbeer, “maar gingen we in de diepte werken.” Pompen werden bovengehaald, slangen uitgerold. “Na de kleine zondvloed die we net voor JamBe 2013 te verduren kregen, kunnen we maar beter goed voorbereid zijn”, zegt Katrien van de organisatie ons. “We laten ons geen derde keer wegwassen.”

Laura, t’hauria encantat…

És molt interessant estar aquí, ja que estem en contacte amb diferents cultures i podem practicar diferents idiomes. Pots sentir cançons de bon profit i de bona nit d’altres països. A vegades tenim dificultat per comunicar-nos, però és fàcil de solucionar.

Ens han agradat molt totes les activitats, especialment el dia de « Let’s go wild », on vam poder triar entre tres tipus de boscs verticals, passar per una speleobox i anar en steppen.

Estem trobant a faltar a una cap nostra , la Laura, que com l’han operada no ha pogut venir, però en representació seva hem portat una nina igualeta a ella, encara que no és el mateix.

Plongez dans notre crèche, installez-vous confortablement et faites le vide. Tous les types de thérapie sont adaptés à ces précieux moments de relaxation. Les cris de bébé et les pleurs contribuent à la détente et à la relaxation. Après une séance, la crèche est idéale pour relâcher vos muscles.

Baloe maakt er graag gebruik van, vertelt hij ons. Zoals je kan lezen in ons hoofdartikel heeft hij op het einde van de dag wel eens nood aan een portie Neuro-care-body-talk-therapy. “De mengeling van gehuil, gekrijs maar ook een gulle babylach krijgen me er weer helemaal bovenop. In het begin was ik niet zo enthousiast, maar nu kan ik niet meer zonder.”

Vandaag krijgt u niet één, maar twee werkgroepen voorgesteld: Secretariaat en Financiën: een olijk duo met een hartverwarmend karakter. Vanuit hun kantoor in het hoofdgebouw coördineren en delegeren zij de administratieve kant van JamBe 2013, tussen telefoon en sanseveria.

We ontmoeten Jeroen, Esther en Lynn op een rustig moment. “Voor het secretariaat was vooral de aanloop naar het kamp een bijzonder drukke periode. Alle aanwezige medewerkers en alle deelnemende groepen hebben met mij mailcontact gehad”, legt Jeroen uit. “Ook de administratie van de tijdelijke medewerkers is onze taak, want dat kan soms wel chaotisch worden.”

Esther en Lynn vervoegden het team pas later. “Wij vullen onze dagen met kleinere administratieve taken en proberen iedereen die hier langs komt met vragen zo goed mogelijk te helpen”, vertelt Esther me.

Recht tegenover Jeroen vinden we Baloe, die instaat voor de financiële en boekhoudkundige kant van het kamp. Samen met Janina, Bert en Julia(UK) is hij ook verantwoordelijk voor de JamBe 2013-shop, waar de eerste artikelen stilaan uitverkocht raken. “Alles waar geld voor moet

betaald worden, passeert via mij. Dat is best een fijn gevoel”, zegt een grijnzende Baloe.

Speciaal om sfeer en gezelligheid te scheppen, nam Baloe zijn sanseveria’s mee van thuis. De dames hebben dan weer een ‘Jan Becaus-herdenkingsmuur’ ingericht. “We hebben zijn laatste journaal met z’n allen bekeken, dat heeft voor een hechte band gezorgd”, vertrouwt Lynn me toe. “De samenwerking tussen de twee teams is meer dan een verstandshuwelijk, ondertussen delen we meer dan enkel een lokaal”, vertelt Jeroen met een glimlach. “Veel meer.”

“We hebben ook al heel wat cadeautjes gekregen van enthousiaste en dankbare deelnemers!”, zegt Esther. “Vooral het verzorgingssetje van Abid uit Maleisië was een verrassing, tot bleek dat Jeroen in Maleisië als een meisjesnaam beschouwd wordt.” De vele bezoekers die het secretariaat over de vloer krijgt staan er soms een beetje naar te kijken, maar het mag duidelijk zijn dat de sfeer binnen beide teams optimaal is. Jeroen sluit het gesprek af met een kritische noot: “Al moeten we Baloe soms wel met zijn voeten op de grond houden.” Bedankt, visbokaal!

Muggen

Jeps, je kent ze wel. Die kleine beestjes die hier op De Kluis toch net iets groter zijn dan thuis. En ja, ook het resultaat mag er zijn. Tot nu toe hebben we een record met Loes, zij heeft de knapste beet: 23,2cm op 14,5 cm is haar aanwinst op het been. Het is wetenschappelijk aangetoond dat hierover nog geen verdere studie is uitgevoerd. Het zou dus goed kunnen dat Loes hier met het wereldrecord rondloopt.

We volgen het op, hoe Loes haar immuunsysteem de bindingen tussen IgC en IgE antilichaampjes laten anticiperen met het antigen van muggenspeeksel.
