A sailor knew that land was nearby if he saw a special cloud formation, a fresh seaweed, nesting birds returning home in the evening or fog.
Sailors used sea currents or tides and winds to increase their speed.
Finding longitude (Ex 4 on P14)
4. There are two methods to find longitude
1) measuring time and speed
2) Compass & complicated mathematical tables
to measure the sun’s shadow and compare it with the height of the sun at midday.
to tell the position of the ship in relation to some stars or the sun.
to measure how height star are above the horizon, and compare that measurement with previous measurements.
to measure the angle between two fixed points outside the ship using two mirrors.
1. This seems to have been the first and most useful form of exploration, which carried the minimum amount of risk.
1). Mary is quite familiar with the people in this town. She seems to have been there a lot.
2). His voice carries the ring ( 声调 )of authority.
3). What’s the minimum age for leaving school in Britain?
2. On a clear day especially during the summer the sailors could use the sun overhead at midday to navigate by.
3. There is a special cloud formation which indicates there
is land close by. 4. An early method of measuring speed involved throwing
a knotted rope tied to a log over the side of the ship. This lesson involves a lot of work.
Don't involve other people in your trouble.
5. They are developments of one another. We help one another with the work.
6. It was awkward to use as one of the points of reference was the moving ship itself.
7 As the ship rose and plunged (跳进,投入) in the waves, it was extremely difficult to be accurate with any reading.
I am sailing , I am sailing , Home again , cross the sea , I am sailing , stormy waters , To be near you , to be free 。 I am flying , I am flying , Like a bird , cross the sky 。 I am flying , passing high clouds , To be near you , to be free 。 Can you hear me ? Can you hear me ? Through the dark night faraway 。 I am dying , forever crying , To be with you , who can say ?
