1957 : 1st artificial satellite (Sputnik 1) was launched into orbit around Earth.

1961 : the former Soviet Union's Yuri Gagarin became 1st man to orbit Earth.

1969 : Armstrong became 1st man to walk on the moon.

1973: Skylab, America's 1st space station was launched into space.

1981 : Columbia, 1st space shuttle, was launched.

1986: The shuttle Challenger exploded 73 seconds after liftoff. All seven crew members were killed including the 1st female teacher Christa McAuliffe.

1988: The space shuttle program began again with the takeoff of Discovery.
