HERE was a great deal of competition to buy a large pale bisque
open mouthed Jumeau doll with heavy painted brows and wth its
original costume at Brightwells recent toy sale in Leominster. It
eventually made 1,350. Another Jumeau but with slight damage to its
bisque head and also with an open mouth sold within estimate at
880. A 35in doll marketed by Jumeau and wearing its original marked
shoes made 1,300, while a dolls trunk with a leading 19th century
toyshop label sold for 210. Dolls heads mounted on turned wooden
sticks and containing a musical movement are known as marottes: a
small collection of these colourful toys had been assembled mainly
from German sources in the 1960s and attracted interest because all
were in original costumes and in working order. The most ornate,
probably assembled in France, its particoloured satin embellished
with silk tassels, sold for 420 and another in cream and blue
reached the same price. An example with a closed mouth but lacking
its hat made 240 whileanother in a checked outfit sold for 200. A
squeaking version, also in its original state the head made by
Heubach went for 130. Among jointed German dolls a closed mouth
character Bruno Schmidt sold for 420 while a damaged version of the
same model reached 90. A small closed mouth girl with fixed eyes
and a sheepskin wig achieved 380; a Jutta 1379 girl, 260; a 33

Mary should stick to selling clothesAPPARENTLY 79 per cent of
people dont trust estate agents and shopping guru Mary Portas is
one of them. Her latest Channel 4 TV series, Secret Shopper has,
for the past few weeks, been analyising the workings of various
businesses high street fashion shops, sofa superstores and last
Wednesday it was the turn of estate agents. In her crusade for
better customer service she pounced on the profession and told it
to buck up and be honest. Charlotte Razzell, Philip Laney &
Jollys manager of communications, said: Watching Mary stalk about
London with a secret camera it was not hard to get worked up.
prestigious turning. Madness? Yes. On the face of it Portas did
make a contribution. She asked agents to do their homework on the
houses they sell and to take viewings seriously enough to justify
their fees. Mrs Razzell, who is based at the firms office in
College Street, Worcester, said: Sadly, estate agency isnt Marys
specialist subject. Usually she sells fashion, so when she storms
into a family business shrieking, its just smoke and mirrors, all
you can think of is the windows she dressed at Harrods. Surely
theres a smattering of dry ice and tin foil behind those? For a
woman whose industry routinely airbrushes supermodels she showed no
regard for flattering photography. Asking agents to tone down
jargon is one thing, asking them to advertise bad news about a
house is rubbish. Do sweet manufacturers print chocolate could make
you fat labels? Mary misunderstood the phrase houses sell
themselves. She thinks agents are lazy, dont sell anything and just
bring buyers and sellers together safely and legally. Regardless of
how you feel about estate agents Mary Portass strengths are clearly
in the fantasies offered by retail shops, not simply any business
with a shop front.
COMMENT: Charlotte Razzell.Viewers heard one estate agent tell
her that west is the new south and a set of sales details described
