What strange weather we have had. There are roses (which haven’t had an autumnprune), camellias and daffodils all in flower inthe garden at the beginning of January. We didn’t get a white Christmas but we didget the snow on Boxing Day.I sent my son to take a photograph of‘Tommy’ our World War 1 soldier.Sadly the lighting was not good but it didshow how cold and lonely it would have beenin the trenches.I must thank everyone for the respect theyhave shown to our memorial.

Very soon the white daffodils and tulips shouldbe in full flower. Woolton will not be in the Britain in Bloomcompetition in 2015 but be assured that our villagewill look as stunning as we can possibly make it.

We want to keep up our high standard so it can beenjoyed by everyone who lives, works or visits thevillage. If you want to help don’t forget to get intouch.

Please support us. - Enjoy your village!Kerry Peacock Horticulture Manager Woolton in Bloom

Comments from a member of theGateacre Society re: old GateacreComprehensive School Site. Both residents and the society are opposing the loss ofevery vestige of green space and the over densificationof housing in Gateacre. 202 houses are too many by far,on such a difficult sloping site which has been (and stillis?) contaminated by 1950's landfill, but you need thefacts from Turley over that issue (we were told at theconsultation there is some gas, but NOT a LOT !! ).Objections have gone to Turley the agents but we arestill waiting to see if the threatened formal applicationwill appear on upcoming planning lists. It may be Countryside Properties are altering the outlineplan (or less likely, changing their minds over buyingthe land?)

In My Liverpool HomeOver 800 students recently enjoyed a day out, visiting some of Liverpool’s wonderful Museums and the iconicFerry. All students from Year 7-10 were given the opportunity to visit the Maritime Museum, Slavery Museum, Seized anda lunchtime trip on the Ferry in preparation for their PSHE lesson “In My Liverpool Home.” Students were set thetask of creating a Tourism Team, consisting of a Journalist, Marketing Executive, Artist, Creative Designer, EventsManager and Reporter

For a number of the students it was thefirst time visiting the museums and theferry, and they’ve already asked if theycan go back!

A couple of students were even lucky enough to take the helm of the Royal Iris Ferry. Another firm favourite of theday was the Museum of Liverpool, in particular “Wondrous Place” and the karaoke booth.I think we can safely say we are all now more than fluent in the lyrics of “Yellow Submarine”!

MORE THAN LOFT LADDERS Look up! And get more space at homefor just £325

We'd all like more room at home. Butnot everyone can afford to move or ex-tend. So what if there was a way to getextra space for just a few hundredpounds, ready to use in less than a day?In truth, that space is already there. It'sjust not being used to its full potential. For most, the loft is a dark and dingyplace visited on rare occasions; a pre-carious scramble across dusty beamswith torch in hand, grabbing what'sneeded then clambering back pastboxes filled with long-forgotten belong-ings. But that dark and dingy place isworth thousands. In fact, it takes up athird of the floorspace in an averagehome. So shouldn't we be making themost of it? And that's where More ThanLoft Ladders (MTLL) comes in. Founded inBolton six years ago, MTLL specialisesin generating space by making our loftseasily accessible. The latest MTLLfranchise is based in Liverpool and is runby skilled local Mark Pennington whosays the company's no-frills approach iswhat most people are looking for. “We're not selling £15,000 loft conver-sions,” says Mark. “This is a low-cost andsimple alternative. For just £277+VATyou can get a ladder that slides easilyup and down, as well as a proper lightand some boarding to make the spacesafe and secure. We can also fit a

draft-proof loft hatch if required fromonly £55.”The price customers are quoted is theprice they will pay, with no additionalcall out charges. Mark provides a freeguarantee on all parts and labour too. ST MARGARET’SDeciding your destination for post -16studies is vital and we are confident thatSt Margaret's will be an ideal destination;both for the quality of teaching and theenvironment in which to study.St Margaret’s is an 11-18 Church ofEngland Academy, which has a verylong standing excellent reputation in thecity, indeed the school was firstestablished 135 years ago.At St Margaret's, a comprehensiverange of courses are offered in additionto a strong pastoral system; providingan environment where you as thestudent feel a part of the Sixth Formfamily. Our Sixth Form is, in manyways, an ideal size. It is small enoughfor us to get to know you individuallyand also large enough to be able to offera curriculum to suit you. The range ofcourses is even larger thanks to our longestablished collaborative links with threetop Liverpool girls’ schools, ArchbishopBlanch, Bellerive and St Hilda’s.We are fortunate to have many good andoutstanding teachers working here – andthat is the main reason why so many ofour Sixth Form students achieve so highlyand go on to land top jobs, or to realisetheir ambitions to study at top universities.Applications are welcome from all 16year-olds so do come along to our SixthForm Open Evening to find out more. There is a wonderful sense of communityand we hope that you will get a feel for thisduring our Open Evening.

CENTURY 21 LIVERPOOL SOUTH URGES LOCALHOUSE PURCHASERS & SELLERS TO UNDERSTANDTHE NEW STAMP DUTY CHANGESCENTURY 21 Liverpool South, the estate and letting agencyexperts, is urging all potential house purchasers and sellersto make sure they clearly understand the new stamp dutysystem and what it will mean for them. The new system for stamp duty was announced by ChancellorGeorge Osborne in December’s Autumn Statement and meansthe old ‘slab’ method has been abolished in favour of a new‘progressive’ approach.CENTURY 21 Liverpool South believes purchasers will nowneed to factor in the stamp duty changes as they could eitherprovide significant savings on the previous system, or forthose purchasing £1m homes, will mean an increase in over-all house purchase cost. The local agents are also urging buyers to contact their officein order to discuss how this might impact their plans, and isalso stressing to sellers that revaluation of properties mayalso be appropriate given the fact many homes were pricedin line with the previous, artificial stamp duty thresholds.CENTURY 21 Liverpool South believe the stamp dutychanges may significantly alter the local housing market andare therefore urging anyone considering buying or sellingproperty to seek their expert advice before proceeding.Dan Pennington of CENTURY 21 Liverpool, commented:“The changes to the stamp duty taxation system were certainlya ‘rabbit out of the hat’ from Chancellor George Osborne in hisrecent Autumn Statement. They appear to have taken the entireproperty market by surprise however we believe the changesare long overdue and the more progressive system should bea lot fairer for many of our clients. The new rules mean differentthings to different buyers but the rule of thumb is that anyonepurchasing a property under £937k will be paying less stampduty under this new system than the old one. “For sellers too, there are issues to consider as the previousthresholds did often distort the price at which properties weremarketed in order to bring them within a certain band. Thisshould no longer be the case and therefore we may well seesome significant revaluation of properties because of this. Theadvice has to be for both buyers and sellers to take expertadvice from CENTURY 21 Liverpool South so we are able totailor their plans to the new local housing market.”To review all properties available to purchase or rent viaCENTURY 21 Liverpool, please visit:www.century21uk.com/liverpoolsouth

Happy New Year 2030!What? Read all about it...By Chris Parker

On Facebook over the festive season, one of my friends posted this; “Do you realise that the year 2030 is now as far away !as the year 2000?”It’s a scary thought – can you believe it’s been 15 whole years since “The Millennium Bug”, the UK fuel protests and the fourth Harry Potter book being released? The revelation has encouraged me to put

some great plans of action into place.

Our hair team have always attended advanced training, but we are going to go ‘the extra mile’ this year. Formed less than a year ago, Woolton Round Table isthe newest Round Table club in the country and we arecurrently looking for new members to join us. The clubis made up of a friendly bunch of guys from variousbackgrounds and occupations in and around the localarea, who meet regularly to have fun and try new activ-ities.

We usually meet up every other Wednesday evening, todo a range of activities, such as go karting, brewery trips, snooker and pool, football, camping weekends, a nightat the dog track, or simply have a pint or two andsomething to eat.

On top of these activities, we also work hard to putsomething back into the local community. This couldinvolve raising funds for local good causes or simplygiving up our time to help others and making a difference. For example we held a food collection last month at thelocal Tesco and were able to make up over 40 Christmashampers and Winter Warm Packs for local pensioners, which we then delivered in person.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all those

who donated to our collection as you helped us make areal difference!

So, if you’re male, aged 18-45 and fancy doing somethingdifferent, then come along to one of our events - get intouch beforehand and we’ll pick you up on the way orwe’ll just meet you there.

Your first event is usually free and there’s no obligationto come along again - we know you’ll want to anyway!

Whether you are new to the area, bored of the rubbishon the TV, or just want to get out more and make somenew friends, you’ll be glad you got in touch. Most ofour members wish they had done sooner - so what areyou waiting for?

THE WOOLTON SOCIETY CARES FOR WOOLTON

Call us now on: 0800 03 59 880 or 01 1

The Woolton Society continues to be an environmental watch-

dog, active in our opposition to acts of civic vandalism.

St James Methodist United Reformed Church in Woolton Village

has illegally destroyed two ancient yew trees that were subject

to Tree Preservation Orders.Concerned neighbours, Woolton

Society members, found that tree surgeons had arrived at the

Church and were about to fell the two trees. After checking the

Council’s internet planning explorer to see if there had been

an application to fell the trees, they foundnothing. However,a

report was found made by the Council’s Tree Officer in December

2009 stating that due to the Church’s previous application to

work on these trees being inappropriate they were being made

subject to Preservation Orders. The neighbours went to the site

and spoke to two of the Church’s estates managers. One informed

them that they did not need permission as they were on

Church property and the other stated that he had spoken to

the council that morning and had been given permission to

remove the trees. The managers were shown the letter

confirming the Preservation Orders but ignored it, insisting that

they could proceed. When asked why they wanted to get rid of

the trees the response was “because they keep some light off

the church and the grass does not grow under them”. Planning

Enforcement at Liverpool City Council were contacted who

confirmed the status of the trees and that no permission had been

granted to carry out any work on them. Planning enforcement

then contacted the tree surgeons direct and instructed them to

cease all work. By this time the trees had been destroyed, despite

vociferous protest from Society members, & the presence of a film

crew from BBC news. The following day the Council’s Tree Officer

again confirmed that he had previously made the trees subject to

a preservation order and that no permission had been given to

work on them. They also confirmed that it is a criminal offence to

destroy trees subject to a TPO. It is now highly likely that St

James’ Church will be prosecuted, and given a substantial

fine for this act of vandalism. The trees have been left as un-

sightly stumps, a sad reminder of their former glory.

In the ongoing controversy concerning the re-development ofSt Julie’s school, a planning application has been now beensubmitted which encroaches upon the public park at WooltonWoods. It is vital that as many people object to this applicationas possible. The application can be found on the Liverpool citycouncil planning explorer under application number 15F/0067.Instructions on how to object to a planning application can alsobe found on the council’s website. The land is subject to acovenant that was placed on the land by Colonel James Reynoldswho bequeathed the land to the people of Liverpool. The councilintends to break this covenant. The remainder of the fields arelisted in the draft Liverpool Local Plan as being possible sitesfor residential development. It is feared that this is the realreason why the council wants to encroach on the land andbreak the covenant now. There is plenty of space on the currentSt Julie’s site to re-develop the school. However, the rest of the St Julie’s site is going to be sold forresidential development. With a more reasonableapproach by the council to this matter there would be roomto redevelop the school on the current site AND sell off some

of the land to residential development. The council refusesto do this. If people do not object to this development andrely on other people to do it then this public park will be lostfor ever.

The Woolton Society also serves its members with a programmeof talks, which are held in the Village Club on Allerton Road inWoolton Village. Wednesday 18th March will see Mrs ChristinaSpencer, archivist for the Bibby Company, speak on the historyof the Bibby Line. This will start at 7.30pm;all talks are free &open to non-members as well as members.

For all society news consult the website on:

www.wooltonsociety.org.uk

or see our notice board beside the HSBC bank in Woolton Village.

Society members receive a regular newsletter with details of all

talks, as well as news & views.

The fight goes on to persuade the council that St Julie’s school can be rebuilt on theexisting site without encroaching on Woolton Woods. Members of Save WooltonWoods, along with other greenspace groups have lobbied council meetings in an at-tempt to get the message across that our green space is disappearing and needs tobe preserved. In Woolton and Gateacre alone, in addition to the school, there areplans to build houses on the site of the old Watergate School, Gateacre School (doublethe amount of houses originally planned), apartments in Church Road South, to namebut a few. The planning application has now been submitted so now is the time tostep up the campaign to ensure that St Julie’s builds state of the art facilities on theexisting site. It can be done.Applications are now sought from organisations within the Woolton council ward tothe Woolton Education and Recreation Trust for small grants. Application forms andguidance notes are available from:

Robin Thomaides, Solicitor,Regulatory Unit,Community Services,Liverpool City CouncilRoom 220, Municipal BuildingsDale StreetLiverpool L2 2DH

and should be returned by 28 February, 2015.The Trustees will meet in March to assess the applications.

Happy new year to everyone! You may have seen or heard about the 2015/16 public sector funding announcement from thecoalition government late last year. On average local authorities in England received a fundingcut of 1.8%, Liverpool has been given a cut of 5.9%, one of the most severe in the country. To put the extreme nature of these cuts into context the Institute of Fiscal Studies describedthem as "colossal" and many have noted that they would take public spending back to levelslast seen in the 1930s, reimagining the composition of the state.

Because of the coalitions targeted and ideological approach to Liverpool (areas such as WestSussex, Wokingham and Surrey all saw increases in their funding) the City Council is faced withsome very difficult choices about the services that it provides and how it goes about deliveringthem. This continued reduction in funding makes an already fragile and delicate situation allthe more worrying. Vital resources for the city are being slashed, compromising the support providedfor some of the most vulnerable in our society and any further prosperity for Liverpool.

It is unjust that wealthier areas such as those above have received an increase in funding whilstwe have not. Since 2010 this Liverpool Labour Council has asked the coalition for a fair approachto austerity. Unfortunately, this request has been ignored. As we head towards a general andlocal election this year, 7th May we encourage you to support the Labour party, who will workto ensure that the broadest shoulders carry the greatest burden.

Under the last Labour government Liverpool blossomed, receiving investment and attention thatit desperately needed. Since May 2010, when the Lib Dem Tory coalition formed in WestminsterLiverpool has been undermined each and every day. A Labour government and a Labour CityCouncil can help ensure that this city receives its fair share.

POTENTIAL USE OF ST JULIES OPEN SPACES TO BUILDNEW SCHOOL WITHIN SITEThe stated Council intention is to use up to 5% of WooltonWood protected green space to build St Julies new school, because there is no other option.

However, using the Councils own figures (from the Local Plan)this 5% extra area amounts to an actual figure of 1695 m2.

The Residents Association believe it is feasible to completethe build within the existing boundary, without unacceptablyimpairing the school current operation, or felling any trees, and has submitted that evidence to the Council for consideration. The Association has looked at the problem creatively, identifyingcurrent unused open / grassy spaces and potential areas alongthe north and north west boundaries (including the perimeterroad) with a view to examining what type of new schoolbuilding this could give.

(a) All council previous plans prior to 10 December 2014 usethe northern perimeter road, parking areas, and inlets in oneway or another adjacent to the boundary sandstone wall toaccommodate a roughly oblong conceptual building, with apart (5% - 1695 m2.) of the new build jutting out on to protectedgreen space land.

(b) The WVRA concept involves extending the same Councilidea to include the North Westerly wall, using the sports hall, westerly perimeter road and all accessible areas to createadditional usable space to compensate the area shortfall of1695 m2. The results of our analysis yield an L shaped building facinginwards to the site (incorporating play areas / hard courts). The method potentially creates more than 4668.71 m2 additional space for building the new school if the sportshall is incorporated in to the new school building and ismade two storey instead of ground floor only. The councilplans of 10 December have already included some of thesechanges we put forward. When the council amended plans (phase 2) of 10 Decemberdrop in are included, the increase in area is even greater, withthe sports hall being demolished. The hall footprint could easilybe widened by some 50%, and lengthened by some 30%We look forward to hearing further.

Yours SincerelyP W Eustance, Chair WVRAC Darnton, Environment Officer, WS
