Sawdust from the Prez…Chuck Haas, President
December!! You know what that means… Well yes there’s the Club
Christmas meeting (party), and yes that means dust-ing off some
past and some new projects for show and tell, and yes there will be
nice gifts for the show and tell drawing, and yes I’m sure everyone
will bring some great treats.
Now where was I? Oh yeah it’s December and I’m sure I’m not the
only one with unfinished and maybe even some unstarted Christmas
gifts. So get busy and make some sawdust!

We are still working on classes for next year and I haven’t
heard from anyone with suggestions?? What do you want to learn?
Maybe you have a technique you would like to learn or perfect.
Maybe there is a project you would like to try but aren’t
comfortable with starting. We’d love your input.
The Board would like to take this opportunity to wish you and
your loved ones a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy Happy New
Year.
See you at the Party
Club Community Service Joseph Hansman, Community Service
Director
Hello everyone, my name is Joseph Hansman and I recently agreed
to take over the role of Community Service Director within our
club. Looking forward to the opportunity to give back to our
community and find new ways to really bring out the knowl-edge,
passion and dedication we all have for the craft. As part of that,
I can’t do this alone and hope that we all can pitch in with
whatever we can, be it time/materials/knowledge/shop space/ideas.
Hope-fully in 2019, we can have one big community project effort
and also a couple smaller ones to find
something for everyone. In January I plan on shar-ing the
planned process towards achieving those goals. To help out, feel
free to email me at [email protected] or call the club
phone number: 515-650-6559, select option 6 to leave me a
voicemail.

Holiday Social Program for DecemberRon Hilliard, Program
Committee Chair
Greetings to you! I hope this cold weather has enabled you to
spend a lot of enjoyable time in your shop. The 2018 DMWW Holiday
Social is sched-uled for December 11, 2018 and the doors will open
@ 6:00 pm at the Woodsmith Store. We will have a potluck dessert
buffet (but no meal as in years’ past) along with hot spiced cider
and coffee. Drinks are provided by the club – desserts are brought
by the members, so bring your favorite holiday treat to share with
others. Spouses are welcome!
Chuck Haas, DMWW Club President, will present the “Year in
Review” beginning @ 6:15 and when finished, the food table will be
open for you to sat-isfy your holiday sweet tooth. As part of the
“Year in Review”, your Holiday Social Committee would like to have
photos of your projects in 2018.
The program will be an expanded “Show and Tell”, where we are
asking members to take pictures of their projects and e-mail these
to Jodi Alberts [email protected] is preparing a
repeating visual display that will play throughout the duration of
the party. We would like you to write a brief description of your
project(s) that can accompany the pictures in “story-board”
fashion. Please identify yourself as the crea-tor of the project
and relate what kind(s) of wood were used and any other interesting
facts about the work. You can bring your project on 12/11 if you
want, but don’t forget to send your picture and story write up as
well. We want to make sure your work is displayed in the slide show
we’ll present during our social time.
Club members who contribute to Show and Tell will be eligible
for door prizes that will be awarded later in the evening. ONLY
THOSE WHO PARTICIPATE IN THE EXHIBIT ARE INCLUDED AS POTENTIAL DOOR
PRIZE WINNERS. Hopefully, this will motivate you to share your
work! The deadline for pictures and write-up’s is Saturday, 12/8 if
sent by email (preferred) or Wednesday, 12/5 is sent using USPS
(see address below).
Our club also has a tradition of collecting dona-tions to the
Urbandale Food Pantry at the Christ-mas Party. Please make your
contributions in the form of checks or cash, since these are more
useful than actual food donations. A surprising number of families
in our area are struggling to “make ends meet” and our generosity
at this time of year has always made a real difference in our
community.
In preparation for the party, I would encourage you to snap
pictures of your projects and write a brief description to
accompany them and e-mail them to Jodi [email protected] We
will hope for favorable weather and look for-ward to a good
time.
If you are NOT emailing your project information, please send
picture(s) and write-up to:- DMWW Holiday SocialC/O Greg & Jodi

Club’s own number. In the past my per-sonal number has been used as
the Club number. The new number is supported by an Internet phone
service called Phone.com.
When calling the Club’s new number, the caller hears the
greeting “You have reached the Des Moines Wood-workers Club”. The
caller is then presented a menu list
of reasons for their call and ask to enter the number of their
call reason. They are then redirected to the voice mail of the
appropriate Club Officer or Vol-unteer. Phone.com then sends an
email to the Club Officer or Volunteer that includes an audio file
of the voice mail.
The new phone service should expedite the Clubs re-sponse to

should also help reduce the time it takes to deal with computer

Des Moines Woodworkers in El Salvador with Tools for
Opportunity
A group of woodworkers, including Des Moines Woodworkers club
members Nathan Kress and Gene Pedersen, traveled with Tools for
Opportuni-ty in November on their latest adventure to Cen-tral
America. For three days we had a great time working alongside
twenty Salvadoran woodwork-ers building tables and benches for a
local school’s lunch room in western El Salvador. The
rot-resist-ant tropical wood we used, called “conacaste”, should
ensure the tables last a very long time.
We then took a few of days to see some amaz-ing sights in this
beautiful country. We visited the workshops of some of the
woodworkers Tools for Opportunity helped in past years. We toured a
lumber yard to learn about the kinds of wood available there.
The view of the crater of the active Santa Anna volcano was a
highlight for everyone. We even travelled up a mountain standing in
the bed of 4-wheel drive pickups (over roads impassable any other
way, except mule) to tour a coffee plantation during the harvest.
Through it all, we got to experi-ence the people and culture of El
Salvador as few tourists do. Many thanks to Kreg Tool for the tools
and sup-port they provided for this trip. And thanks to the mayors
of San Pedro Puxtla and Santa Cata-rina, and their staffs, for
making sure the work-shops went without a hitch. After the project
was wrapped up, we left the twenty woodworkers with the tools and
the promise that they could keep
the tools if they used them, along with their donated labor, to
“pay it forward” by building other projects for their communities.
It was a great trip! Let us know if you would like to join us for
future trips like this one.
