Long Island City’s streets and skyline continue to evolve to re- flect the dynamic growth of this neighborhood, said Department of Transportation Queens Borough Commissioner Dalila Hall. New York City’s Department of Trans- portation is always interested in working with the local community to identify opportunities, such as adding new speed bumps on 5th Street, which help make streets safer for everyone, especially our young- est New Yorkers walking to school. Council Member Van Bramer advocated for the traffic safety im- provements along 5th Street after local residents and school officials came forward and requested assis- tance. The Department of Trans- portation converted 5th Street be- tween 46th Road and 50th Avenue into a one-way southbound street before the start of the 2014 school year. Three speed bumps were also installed in August along the heavily trafficked pedestrian corridor one between 50th Avenue and Borden Avenue, and two between 48th Avenue and 50th Avenue. As the 2014 school year begins the completion of these traffic safety improvements will make the residential street safer for hundreds of students, local residents, fami- lies and seniors. Following the Administrations introduction of the Vision Zero initiative, Van Bramer’s office has worked closely with the Depart- ment of Transportation, police pre- cincts, schools and local commu- nity leaders to identify the most dangerous corridors and intersec- tions in Western Queens. Since taking office the Council Member has helped expedite the installa- tion of stop signs, speed bumps, pedestrian countdown clocks, traf- fic signals and Neighbor Slow Zones in Astoria, Sunnyside, Woodside and Long Island City. “These traffic safety improve- ments on 5th Street are encourag- ing because as Long Island City continues to grow, our infrastruc- ture will need to keep pace in order for our streets to remain safe, said Senator Michael Gianaris. As more and more people move to our neigh- borhood to live and raise families, we will need to keep making these improvements happen quickly. Though city transportation agen- cies are often slow to act, rest as- sured I will always work with Councilman Van Bramer to ensure our growing neighborhood gets the safety improvements we deserve. Marking Sepsis Awareness Month, today, Rep. Joe Crowley (D-Queens, the Bronx), Vice Chair of the Democratic Caucus, an- nounced plans to introduce new legislation to improve sepsis aware- ness, diagnosis, and treatment. Crowley’s bill, named after Sunnyside, Queens resident Rory Staunton, who died at the age of 12 from sepsis in 2012, will direct federal agencies to increase public outreach efforts and to develop and carry out a national action plan to fight sepsis and septic shock. In addition, Crowley announced that he will be forming a new congres- sional caucus to bring together Members of Congress, families, and advocates to exchange ideas and address policy concerns. Crowley announced these actions while delivering the opening re- marks at the Sepsis: Defeating the Killer national forum, hosted ear- lier today by the Rory Staunton Foundation and North Shore-LIJ Health System. “Even one death from sepsis is one death too many, and the time is now for the federal government to take a comprehensive and con- certed approach to preventing and treating sepsis nationwide. It is my hope that between this legislation and a congressional caucus focused on elevating the issue of sepsis, we can start to make significant head- way in treating and preventing this terrible condition,” said Rep. Crowley. “Rory Staunton’s desire to help make the world a better place, even at such a young age, was inspiring, and with these new congressional efforts, we can help do the same in his honor.” Crowley’s The Rory Staunton Coordination, Awareness, Re- search and Education (CARE) for Sepsis Act will focus on increas- ing interagency coordination, rais- ing national attention through pub- lic awareness efforts, expanding research and development to bet- ter treat sepsis, and improving edu- cation for medical professionals to increase early intervention. “I thank Congressman Crowley for his dedication to this fight. This legislation will go a long way to- ward helping save lives, and I know Rory would be proud,” said Ciaran (continued on page 3) Rep.
