These will bloom year-over-year and support the health of the soil and trees. “Our goal today was to hit 25 beds — we did 31,” said Bill Schmidt of the NYC Parks Department and a longtime leader in the Greening Western Queens effort. “This was a great success, critical to the continued health of the trees we’ve planted.” Successful E-Recycling Day In Woodside Elected Officials Install Stop Sign And Crosswalk On Center Blvd On May 30th, New York City Council Majority Leader Jimmy Van Bramer, State Senator Michael Gianaris, Joe Conley, Chair of Community Board 2, as well as parents and children from Long Island City called on the Depart- ment of Transportation to install traffic calming measures along Center Boulevard. “Too often drivers treat Center Boulevard as a speedway,” said Council Member Van Bramer. “For years the Department of Transpor- tation has denied the community’s requests to have traffic calming and pedestrian safety measures in- stalled along this growing residen- tial street. The Department of Transporta- tion recently responded to the Coun- cil Member’s office stating, “cross- (continued on page 4) (continued on page 4) walks are generally not installed at intersections where traffic controls are not in place.” For over two years, Council Member Van Bramer has been advocating on the community’s behalf to get traffic signals, stops signs, speed humps and crosswalks installed along the burgeoning residential community. Center Boulevard runs in front of an elementary school, a high school, two athletic fields and is an access road to Long Island City’s waterfront which is home to Hunt- ers Point South Park and Gantry Plaza State Park as well as a dog run. According to recent NYPD’s Motor Vehicle Collision Reports, the residential street experienced five vehicular collisions during the first four months of the year. For years parents have been concerned about speeding vehicles along the residential street. Over 620 local residents and families have signed a petition calling on the Department of Transportation to install stop signs, speed bumps and visible crosswalks along the Center Boulevard. “Street safety needs to be a top priority for the City of New York,” said Cara Lamberg, Co-Vice Presi- dent of PS/IS 78’s Parent Teacher Association. “We cannot wait for a tragedy to force the Department of Transportation’s hand in installing safety measures on Center Boule- vard. Our children deserve to be able to cross the streets safely to and from school. If the city builds the schools than it is the responsi- bility of the city to keep the stu- dents safe. Stop signs and visible crosswalks should not be an after- thought when it comes to planning our neighborhoods. For more than 10 years PS/IS 78 has been posi- tioned on Center Boulevard, which is a road that has no visible mark- ers indicating to traffic that a school actually exists here. We need ac- tion from the Department of Trans- portation now before a child or pedestrian gets killed.” “The DOT keeps saying that Center Boulevard does not need crosswalks or stop signs, but that is not good enough for the parents and children here today,” said State Senator Michael Gianaris. “One look around this neigh-borhood and anyone can see thegrowth reflected by the manypeople moving here to raise theirfamilies. Nothing is more impor-tant than protecting our kids, andthat job is not done until they canget to and from school safely. I willcontinue working with Council-man Jimmy Van Bramer and theparents and students of Long Is-land City until the Department ofTransportation comes to its sensesand makes this street safer.”

“As a big supporter of MayorDe Blasio’s vision Zero program, I

believe our first priority should beto keep our pedestrians in our com-munity safe” said AssemblywomanCatherine Nolan. “I commendCouncilman Jimmy Van Bramerfor raising this issue and I urge theDepartment of Transportation totake the appropriate steps so wecan keep our community in LongIsland City safe.”

“It is a sad day in our commu-nity when repeated requests to theDepartment of Transportation forimprovements to pedestrian andvehicle safety go unanswered,” saidJoe Conley, Chair of CommunityBoard 2. “The people gathered heretoday who live with these trafficdangers are the experts. The De-partment of Transportation mustlisten to our community expertsand implement safety measuresimmediately.”

Participants were members ofthe Woodside Neighborhood As-sociation, Greening WesternQueens, and the Woodside-areacongregations of The Church ofJesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

“This was the largest num-ber of people we’ve had at anyproject we’ve done,” said DavidRosasco of the Woodside Neigh-borhood Association. “I hopepeople will recognize we’veadded something today.”

Woodsiders in attendance werepleased with the effort.

“This was wonderful,” saidElba Santiago, a long-time

(continued from front page) Woodside resident and volunteer.“We had a lot of support from theMormons especially. We’re anx-ious to see what the [perennials]will look like once they bloom.”

A number of families,Santiago’s included, brought chil-dren to participate and learn.

“This was a great opportunityto serve,” said Yancy Zimmerman,a six-year Woodside resident, whobrought his three-year-old sonJeshua to the project. “We don’toften have opportunities to teachhim, hands-on, about caring forplants and trees.”Jeshua piped thathe most liked filling wateringcans from the fire hydrant.

Much of the workforce camefrom Woodside’s three Latter-daySaint (Mormon) congregations, ofwhich Zimmerman is a member.

“We’re proud to help beau-tify our community and bring

together people of all faiths andwalks of life in cooperation,”said Fernando De León, a mem-ber of the denomination’s localpresidency, which oversees con-gregations throughout WesternQueens, similar to a Catholicdioceses. “It was especiallywonderful to see so many fami-lies edified through service. Myson and I had a great time.”

The trees, distinguished byGreening Western Queens’branded tree guards, are locatedprimarily on 62nd through 64thStreets between 39th Avenue andRoosevelt Avenue.

Materials were provided by theGreening Western Queens Fund,an ongoing initiative to invest inenvironmental projects in WesternQueens, in partnership with theNew York City Department ofParks and Recreation.

Assemblywoman Petitioning For Re-Election

The 2014 election season began lastweek in New York City with the start ofpetitioning for candidates seeking to qualifyfor the electoral ballot. Congressman Jo-seph Crowley, who is also Queens CountyDemocratic Party leader, joined friends andsupporters of Assemblywoman MargaretMarkey as they gathered on Saturday, May31, to continue their district-wide drive to

place the veteran 30th District legislator onthe ballot again this fall.

“Experience Counts” is the messagethey carry, emphasizing her 16 years ofservice to the community and New YorkState, experience that has moved her intothe senior leadership where she is a mem-ber of the powerful Ways & Means Com-mittee of the Assembly and chairs the

Assembly Tourism, Parks, Arts and SportsDevelopment Committee.

“I am proud of the results I have deliv-ered for New York and the local communi-ties I represent over my 16 years in Albany,”said Assemblywoman Markey. “Over thelast three election cycles, I faced the sameaggressive opponent who did not agree withmy approach to government or community

service and my constituents re-elected meeach time by very large margins. In additionto my work in Albany over the past twoyears, I have continued to deliver supportfor local community service and non-profitorganizations. I don’t believe any otherDemocrat can be more effective in Albanythan me for the people of our 30th Districtover the next two years.”

In March 2013, ChildObesity180 in collaboration with Tufts University launched “HealthyKids Out of School,” an incentive for out-of-school programs to promote healthy habits. Pack390 of Woodside has completed the challenge and proudly displayed the Pack’s certificate and“Healthy Unit Patch” they each earned.

To complete the challenge, the Scouts served fruit and vegetables as a snack for three packmeets, water for six and exercised fifteen minutes or more for nine meetings. They took the“Sugar Quiz,” and were stunned to see the amount of sugar in the common soft drinks theyconsume. The scouts have since then, continued to make water their main beverage anddiscovered that clementine oranges are better than candy. On Friday, May 30th, the Scouts of Pack 390 Woodside hiked from their den at St.

Teresa’s Roman Catholic Church to Engine 325/Ladder 163’s fire station in Woodside.Fireman, Steve Lopilato, a former scout himself, answered questions about being a firefighter and gave them an interior view of the engine, while Louie Caraballo gave a handson demonstration of the engine’s equipment. The Scouts and their parents are grateful forthe dedication of our first responders and the Pride of Woodside.
