As we all know, starting a new school year can present challenges for all of us parents. If your child needs any kind of assistance as we start the new school year, please let us know how we can help. It is important to me that all students feel comfortable and safe, as this is the best way to increase learning at our school. With that, school safety is our top priority and we successfully participated in our safety drills during the first week of school. We will continue to have our stu-dents work through our safety drills each month to ensure our readiness, should we have a situa-tion in which we need to use one of our procedures. We use these drills to continue assessing our strengths and more importantly, to give us feedback on the areas in which we need to im-prove, so that all children and staff are learning in a safe environment. Again, student and staff safety will remain our top priority as we work through another great school year at Woodland.

During the first days of school, I visited each classroom and I can tell that the students are enjoy-ing their learning and proud to be Woodland Wolves! It was clear to me that high levels of learn-ing started on day 1, and that our students are going to have the best year yet. As we start this school year, I invite all of you to take an active role with the school. Consider volunteering, join-ing our outstanding PTO, attending our events, and stopping by to visit! I hope you too found the first days of school to be positive for your children, and I again look forward to working with all of you this year!

Proud to be a Wolf and Papermaker!

NOTES FROM THE OFFICE

CALLING YOUR CHILD IN SICK

When you call your child in sick, please indicate to the office why you are calling him/her in. In the case of strep throat, chicken pox, pink eye or any other contagious illness, a letter will be sent to each child in the class, after two cases have been reported, indicating that a classmate has been exposed.

*************

BUS RIDING If you want your child(ren) to ride another student’s bus, please be aware that only bus stu-dents can ride a bus. This is an insurance issue with Lamers Bus Lines and there will be no exceptions. A written note from both parents involved must accompany all requests to ride another student’s bus.

AFTER SCHOOL PICK-UP

As we continually strive to keep our students as safe as possible, we ask that all students and parents pick-

ing up students, exit the front of the building after school. Please refrain from picking up students on the

north side of the building (near the 5K playground), as this can create unsafe situations with children run-

ning in between cars. Thanks for helping keep our kids safe!

PICTURE RE-TAKE DAY—OCTOBER 3RD

Picture re-take day is scheduled for Tuesday , October 3rd, at Woodland

School. Save this date if your child missed having their picture taken at

our picture and paperwork day. Please click here to access the Network

Photography order form.

copies are available in the school office at your request.

You may or may not be aware that Kimberly Area School District has two clothes closets that are located in two of our schools. One of the clothes closets is at Mapleview Intermediate (920-788-7910) and the other is at Westside Elementary (920-739-3578). If you would like to donate or are in need of some assistance with re-sources, you can contact Mapleview or Westside. In addition to the clothes closets, Woodland is frequently being offered ways to support our families if they should fall upon economic hard-ship. Please reach out to your child’s teacher or school counselor if you are in need of any assistance throughout the year.

FAMILY RESOURCE INFORMATION/OPPORTUNITUES TO DONATE

If your student is going to be absent we ask that you please contact the Main Office at 730-0924 option 1 to let us know that he or she will not be present for class as soon as possible. When leaving a message, please indicate your child’s name, homeroom teacher, and reason for the absence. You are able to leave a message at any time outside of our normal office hours of 7:30 AM-4:00 PM.

Wisconsin’s school compulsory law requires students miss no more than ten (10) days per school year. Once a student has missed ten or more days of school, a doctor’s note is required to excuse the absence. Absences excused by a medical professional generally do not count toward a student’s ten day maximum. If you have questions regarding our attendance policy, please contact Tom Smits.

Milk Moola milk caps from Kwik Trip. Please send them in as

you collect them. Any profits we receive from these pro-

grams go towards supporting PTO events and activities.

There are no cash limits, so the potential for this program is

unlimited. Thank you for your continued support!

Now that school is back in session, please remember to drive safely around pedestrians, school buses and bicyclists, and to provide children with the necessary knowledge to stay safe on their way to school and while at school. Whether students walk, ride their bike, take the bus or drive to school, it is extremely important that they - and the motorists around them - take proper safety precautions.

Please remember to: Slow down and watch for students in school zones and wherever children are present. Drive cautiously around school buses, including obeying the amber warning and red

stopping systems. Follow the safety procedures for drop off and pick up at our school. Safety is a top priority and we appreciate your support in helping to keep the children in our community safe.

WOODLAND ELEMENTARY PBIS KICK-OFF EVENT

On Friday, September 8th, Woodland Elementary School held our Woodland Way Kick-Off for the 2017-2018 school year! Woodland Elementary School uses a framework of Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) to create our school culture known as the Woodland Way. This year, our theme is TEAM (Together Everyone Achieves More) and we had a great event to kick this off. Students at Woodland Elementary School learned about the Woodland Way, our community values, and our new theme. They had the chance to also here from Coach Jones and members of the Varsity Football Team on how they too use a concept of TEAM to win both on and off the field. Elementary students, staff, and the varsity football players participated in some activities, and WE ALL HAD FUN! We would like to give a special thanks to Coach Jones, and the players for stopping on out. We are excited to show our TEAM at Woodland Ele-mentary School this year!

Just a reminder: All students attending Kimberly Papermaker foot-ball games or any other school event need to be accompanied by a parent/guardian, per the following district policy.

Policy 5855

The Board of Education encourages students to attend as many school events held after school as possible, without interfering with their schoolwork and home activities. Enthusiastic spectators help to build school spirit and encourage those students who are participating in the event.

However, in order to ensure that students attending as non-participants are properly safeguarded, the Board requires that all elementary and pre-high school students be accompanied by a parent or adult chaperone when they arrive at the event and throughout its duration. The Board will not be responsible for a student(s) if they attend without an adult chaperone.

The Board will continue to provide adequate supervision for all students who are participants in District-sponsored events.

We require all students to be seated and have designated seating areas for middle school students. We are expecting all elementary and intermediate school students to enter with an adult chaperone. If they are not seated with the adult chaperone they will be seated in the middle section as space permits.

Dear Parent or Guardian:

It is important that our youth have knowledge about human growth and development to understand body changes, maintain a healthy lifestyle, and make healthy, responsible decisions which fit with their personal values and yours. It is important for you to be the primary source for information and education, and our schools will provide support to assist your efforts.

4 year-old-kindergarten through twelfth grade human growth and development objectives guide learning in our schools. These objectives were designed by a committee of parents, teachers, administrators, and community members to be developmentally appropriate and were approved by the Board of Education. The objectives for your child’s grade level are printed here along with our philosophy for your review. Your child’s teachers will provide opportunities throughout the school year for your child to learn these objectives. To provide the best learning situations, we connect this information with other things about which the child is learning. Because of this, human growth and development learning may occur throughout the year when it is most appropriate, but there may be times when the learning is more focused.

Films related to the physical and emotional changes that occur with puberty are used in grades 4, 5, and 6. When the class is viewing one of these films, the teacher or counselor will notify you in advance so that you can have the opportunity to preview the film. We encourage you to take time with your child to discuss the film together after it is shown in class. This discussion provides another opportunity for you to share your values and expectations and to understand your child’s perspectives. We have additional resources to help parents connect and speak with their children about human growth and development issues. For more information about available resources, speak with your child’s teacher or counselor.

If you have any questions or concerns about what your child will be learning, please talk with your child’s teacher or counselor. If you prefer that your child not participate in human growth and development instruction, you need to make that request in writing to the teacher or school principal in advance and an alternative educational opportunity will be provided for your child during that time. Students whose parents exempt them from instruction related to human growth and development will still receive instruction on other health-related topics such as basic hygiene and sanitation, the effects of controlled substances and alcohol on the human body, symptoms of disease and the proper care of the body. Instruction is also provided for elementary students on effective means by which students may recognize, avoid, prevent and halt physically or psychologically abusive or intrusive situations, such as child abuse, child enticement and sexual abuse.

If you would like more information about the district’s health curriculum, including the complete human growth and development curriculum, or the instructional materials, please contact me at (920) 788-7900, Extension 4181. Sincerely, Ron Simonis Director of Curriculum

PHILOSOPHY

The Kimberly Area School District recognizes human growth and development as a lifelong educational process. The responsibility for this education belongs first and foremost to parents, church, and community. The district recognizes the obligation of the schools to support and supplement this aspect of education. Since students are in school for a large portion of their lives, it seems appropriate that the school offer to assist parents in these areas.

This human growth and development program has been planned with the active, constructive involvement of parents, teachers, students, community leaders, and administrators with approval by the School Board.

The Kimberly School District is committed to provide human growth and development instruction as part of a comprehensive education program. Human growth and development instruction refers to the process of growth in the intellectual, physical, emotional, spiritual, and social phases of individuals and their human relations.

Human growth and development should not be an isolated special facet of education. Sequential, well-planned units appropriate for developmental needs will be integrated through the 4K-12 curriculum. Our goal is to provide accurate information in a non-threatening environment which includes dialogue between parents, students, and teachers. This accurate information will allow students and educators to use correct terminology when referring to human growth and development topics.

The Kimberly Area School District recognizes its responsibility to promote in our students positive self-concepts, healthy interpersonal relationships, and responsible decision making. This curriculum will help students examine their own attitudes and behavior in relation to the norms and values of parents, church, and community.

OBJECTIVES FOR GRADE 5K

1. Identify and use the basic steps of the decision making process. 2. Identify people they can trust. 3. Recognize there are feelings. 4. Identify their feelings. 5.
