School History

Wood Elementary has the honor of being named after two of Arlington’s finest citizens: Roy and Louise Wood. Their history with the Arlington ISD began in 1949.

Louise Wood received her BA degree from North Texas State University and her Masters degree from Texas Wesleyan College. She taught at South Davis Elementary and at Hill Elementary. She retired from the Arlington school system in 1974 after many years of dedicated service.

Roy Wood received his BA and Masters degrees from North Texas State University. He was principal of West Side School and then Berry Elementary. He later served as AISD Superintendent of Finance from 1954 to 1978. At his retirement, after 39 years of service, he was honored with “Roy Wood Appreciation Day” by the Arlington community and the Chamber of Commerce.

Our school was dedicated in their honor in January 1980.

AISD Board of Trustees Superintendent: Dr. Marcelo Cavazos

The School Board is the policy-making body of the school district. The Board oversees the problems of the high schools, junior highs, and elementary schools. School Board meetings are held the first and third Thursday of each month at 7:00 pm in the Board Room of the Administration Building. Every regular meeting has Open Forum at which time anyone may address the Board for a five-minute time limit. Should there be more than one person wishing to address the Board on the same subject, a spokesperson must be selected.

In order to appear on the agenda, written request must be given to Dr. Marcelo Cavazos, Superintendent, eight days prior to the meeting date.

Elections for School Board members are held on the first Saturday in May, and each member is elected for a three-year term.
