The covers are made from Teak (Tectona Grandis), a tropical hardwood species which originates form the plantations of South East Asia and is produced in areas of Indonesia, India, Thailand, Philippines, and Malaysia. The more mature the tree, the stronger the wood, Teak is typically given around 80 years to grow before it is cut down for use, meaning that this book may be around 100 years old. More speci fically, the content o f the book examines step-by-step growth formation and visually explores texture, grain, and pattern found in various wood species; drawing connections between science, art, and design. The book studies patterns both visually and conceptually through content resting on scientific research and sel f-directed/ executed photography and illustrations. To reinforce the notion of patterning the book displays a repetition of lines consistently throughout the pages both typographically and compositionally. Visually, the book is set in monotoned brown hues to emphasize organic wood tones and to bring focus to visual textures within the wood specimens photographed. Progressively presenting patterns found from the most minute scale of scienti fic growth and seasonal ring formations, to bigger perspectives of repetition found in lumber production and the cycling of life on a more profound and conceptual exploration.
