Wood Lane Arches Welcome Welcome to our public drop-in session for our plans to transform our disused railway arches beneath and adjacent to Wood Lane Tube station into retail and commercial units. The new units will create new jobs and opportunities for business and generate revenue to be reinvested into the transport network. Existing and future local residents will benefit from a range of shops, cafes and restaurants which will likely include smaller chains and independents, complementing, not competing with Westfield. We will create new workspace to suit small and new businesses. We will open up some of the arches, creating important new pedestrian routes in the area and helping visitors and residents to make the most of the public realm which is being delivered to either side as part of the neighbouring developments. New cycle parking will provide spaces for both visitors and those working in the units. Please view our proposals and fill in a feedback form. If you have any questions, please ask a member of the project team. To the south of our arches, Westfield is constructing new retail space and new homes and to the north of the arches, St James (SJGL) is building new homes. Across Wood Lane, Stanhope (BBC) is creating new homes, offices and entertainment and leisure facilities. Further north, towards the Westway, Imperial College London is adding a major new campus.

Welcome

Welcome to our public drop-in session for our plans to transform our disused railway arches beneath and adjacent to Wood Lane Tube station into retail and commercial units.

Wider context

Our arches between Wood Lane Tube station and the A3320 West Cross Route are within the White City Opportunity Area, close to several major developments.

Programme & phasing

We own 31 arches in this stretch of the railway viaduct. We plan to convert 20 arches to retail and commercial use, 7 arches to public access routes, 1 arch for cycle parking and the remaining arches servicing the businesses or containing station equipment.

We will complete the project in two phases, coordinating with the construction timetables of the neighbouring developments. We intend to submit a planning application by the end of November 2016 and subject to planning consent, will begin constructing the first phase in spring 2017.

The first phase will cover the arches closest to the station and deliver 13 retail and commercial arches ready to hand over to new tenants in late 2017- early 2018, when the new John Lewis store at Westfield is set to open. This phase will also include 4 public access arches and the cycle parking arch.

The second phase will cover the arches closest to the A3320 West Cross Route and deliver a further 7 retail arches and 3 public access arches. We will aim to complete this phase when the adjacent residential developments complete in the early 2020s.

Design and proposal

We take design very seriously, and this applies as much to our proposals for our arches as it does to our stations, our posters or our maps and logos.

We want our new retail and commercial units to be attractive to new tenants and to look at. We have designed our proposals to respond to the setting and draw on precedents from other successful arch schemes.

Above, we’ve provided some examples of our arches and other arches around London to see how the retail and commercial arches could look and how arches can be best utilised as public access routes.

We will create arches with glazed frontages to both sides of the railway viaduct and ensure that there is a consistent appearance across all of the arches (Arch type 2A), with the exception of 6 arches towards the station end which will project out (Arch type 2B) due to station platform above.

Lighting will be used to make the units look their best, accenting the brick architecture of the railway viaduct. Our lighting will contribute to a safe public realm either side of the arches at all times of day.

Wood Lane Tube station

Our proposals will not impact on services at Wood Lane Tube station. We will be moving the station equipment currently stored in some of the arches into one dedicated arch.

Our new arches will provide revenue that we will reinvest into the transport network, to improve the experience of our customers and to keep London moving and growing.
