Summeris upon us and vacation time for many of us. If you plan a visitto Washington and the National Archives it is well to allow plenty oftime, and even better to write and let them knowwhen you plan to visitand exactly what you would like to see. In the days before the Revolutionary Pension Applications were microfilmed it would take several hoursfor them to get a single file out for you, so you can appreciate the advantage there would be timewise to have things waiting for you when youarrive. I hope that someof you will visit the Archives and check on someof the Warof l8l2 Pension Applications as well as applications for BountyLarldo

Youwill probably want to visit the Library of Congress while in Washington as well, and there again there is a long wait for books from the stacks. The Jefferson Reading Room, where the Genealogical Collection is housed,is located in the Library Annex, which faces 2nd street,N.E. This isnear the SupremeCourt, Capitol, and House and Senate Office Buildings,so you might want to go by the Library first, give them your bookrlists, and go on to other things for several hours and then returno

The DARLibrary is a wonderful place to do research because of the openstacks, and may be used by non members for a very small fee. I am amemberof the National Genealogical Society and have made use of theirlending library, but have never visited the library. It is not openevery day so you should call before going there. I believe itis availableonly to memberso

If you are vacationing elsewhere in the country and have time on yourhands,by all means go to the county court house and copy a few marriages, wills, deeds, etc., and share them with us. The earliest records arewhat most of us need. I can't stress enough therimportance of deeds.when all else fails they sometimes provide the information we are seeking.

I hope that you have kept the 1973 issues of this magazines I am sorryto say that the stencils got torn and were discarded, so no more copiesmay be printed. I have had a'number of requesusfor back issues which 1was unable to fill. If any of you don't care about keeping the 1973issues, just let me know and I'll pass your name on to someone who wantsthem,

Rememberto send in material to this magazine. It is welcome and W111beused. Wedo appreciate your sharing.

SOUTH CAROLINA REVOLUTIONARY WAR RECORDS

The South Carolina Archives Department has published three volumes of "AccountsAudited of Revolutionary Claims Against South Carolina". These contain papers filedby persons claiming compensation from the South Carolina government for military services rendered and supplies furnished during the Revolutionary War. The ArchivesDepartment has also published Books B, I,L-N, O-Q, R-T, U~W,X Pt. 1, X Pt. 2, Y-Z:C-F, G-A, and K of"stub Entries to Indents Issued in Payment of Claims Against SouthCarolina GrowingOut of the Revolution". If the claims were approved, they were paidin certificates (indents), and on stubs detached from these certificates the namesof the recipients and descriptions of the services performed were entered. Thesebrief entries and the Accounts Audited are often the only surviving evidence ofsupport given to the cause of American independence. These volumes, with the excepLion of Vol. I, Audited Accounts, have been searched for WOOD~WOODS.It is my understanding, that the South Carolina Archives has a card file of these records andmanymore exist than have been published, so if you think your ancesr,r served there, you should check the card file. ‘

A.FREDERICK COUNTY SAGA - THE WOOD AND RELATED FAMILIES

(Compiled by Howard Hanford Hopkins, 4th, M.D., Ruxton, Md., in 1945, and revisedby him in 1970. Dr. Hopkins contributed this manuscript for the magazine.)

Frederick County, Maryland, was created in 1748 out of the western part of preexisting Prince George's County. Settlers had madetheir wayinto its interior certainlyas early as 1720. Scotch Irish and Germancame by way of Pennsylvania, Dutch fromNewYork and Delaware, and English from southern Maryland soon followed. Amongthelatter were people named Wood.

The Woodfamilies, lead by Charles, sr., and Joseph, came into the regi n they settledon the headwaters of Linganore Creek by way of theigld Annapolis Road, knownas the"WagonRoad to Annapolis", at the time the Woodssought out their vacant land. Itlead in a northwesterly direction from Annapolis, crossing Parr's Ridge through present-day Mount Airy to strike the headwaters of Ben's Branch about where the communityof Prospect, or what remains of it, is located. Then it went down-stream to NewLondon where it became the present-day Gas House Pike, wandering on to Mount Pleasantto join the Liberty Road, Route 26.

The first Survey23 near the land taken up by the Woodswas on August 22, 1739, forfifty acres, called, "Kendrick's Hap", on the nor h slope of Ben's Branch Valley, anda few miles south of Unionville. Robert Kendrick was in MonocacyManor as early as1733, and Darby Ryan had joined him before 1734, when he had Ego tracts of land surveyed for himself, one of them, Darby's Delight". John Jamesmarried Lucy, (1733-1827), daughter of our Joseph and Mary Wood, joined Kendrick andRyan in 1742, taking up "Dispute", close to "Kendrick's Hap". John James was named"Road Supervisor" of his section of the WagonRoadto Annapolis, and had its coursediverted to its noy4morenortherly direction, allegedly so that it wouldpass closerto the stone house his son Daniel built in 1763, and which still stands in 1970.So it was no problem for Charles and Joseph Woagto move north of these people toexcellent land, guided no doubt by John Howard of Gideon, who had already spottedout and bought Warrants for good tracts for resale.

, whose son Daniel

John Howard of Gideon who came from Baltimore County, and Phillip Howard were livingon "Howard‘s Range", southeast of Libertytown in 1748. They were land speculators, eventually sold out, and removedto North Carolina.

2Prior to and during the Revolution (1777), however, Ephraim Howard6 was living onthis land. His stone house stands on Dollyhyde Road now, (1970), enlarged by theMaynard family after the Revolution, about two milesouth of Route 26. Ephraim How

Colonel, and served under Daniel Jenifer in the Revoluard was comissioned a Lt.Notestion. (Tracey mentions an Ephraim Howardliving in Bruceville, 1769, p. 221,

from Old Monocacy. Whether these Ephraims are one and the same I do not know.)

Mymother's name was Alice Eleanor Griffith (wood) Hopkins. Born at 935 Spring, near Monrovia, in NewMarket District, Frederick County, Maryland, she was named byher mother, Annie Mary (Griffith) Wood, for her great aunt, Mary Eleanor (Griffith)Plummer, the granddaughter of Col. Philemon Griffith, a Revolutionary officer. Shewas very proud of her Griffith ancestry, and of the silverware and jewelry which shehad inherited from Col. Griffith through her great aunt, "Mollie", MaryEleanor(Griffith) Plumer.

The history of her Griffith and Hammondancestors, from southern Maryland, (her motheimother was'Mnrgaret Durge§s3Hammond),and their part in the development of Marylandis a matter of record. ’ ’ On h other hand, her Woodlineage has not so far beenestablished, and the two records ’ which exist are not without errors.

FREDERICK COUNTY.SAGA-- Contld?

Col. Philemon Griffith} Revolutionary patriot, and his sister, Eleanor, whomarriedJohn Burgess, also an officer in the Militia forces, were born in the Griffith settlement near Unity, a village in northern MontgomeryCounty, which in their time had notyet been created out of eastern Frederick County. They were both children of HenryGriffith and his second wife, Ruth Hamond. The progenitors of the Griffith, Burgess, and Hammondfamilies in Frederick County, were neighbors in Anne Arundel County, wherethey first settled in Maryland. Someof them were important personages in the earliest time of settlement of the Cofany of Maryland, such as Col. William Burgess ofLondontown on South River, and General John Hammond,one-time Commander—in-chief ofall the Militia forces of the Western Shore.

Imposing Griffith-built colonial homesstill stand near Unity n.mely "Elton" and "33tirement", both of stone, "Edgehill", log and clapboard, and ”Tusculum"the oldest, but muchmodified and enlarged by additions.

The Frederick County census of 17906 lists thirteen men by the name of wood. One ofthese men was Col. Joseph Wood , who founded woodsborough. (The community of Woodville exists in the eastern edge of the Countyabout three miles northeast of MountAiry, having sprung up around Clary's mill on Benfs Branch. Once thriving, now in1970, no signs of the mill remain and these houses which still stand are rotting away.Justice SamuelChase enjoyed a sumer cabin in the hills near this place whenhe wasserving in Washington on the Supreme Court. It was not named for the Woodfamily.:There is a second woodville in Maryland, this one a small comunity in Prince George'sCounty, not far from Upper Marlboro. This one was named for people named Woodwhosettled there.)

About Joseph Woodand his family there has been much written. With him, however, this paper has no direct concern, because so far as I have been able to learn, hedoes not connect in any way with my mother's Woodfamily. The Census lists also thenames of Basil, Henry and John Wood. These were the fifth, seventh and eighth children of Charles Wood, Sr., whomI shall show to be the earliest knownWoodancestorsof my mother.

The name of Charles wood, Sr., appears first on the records of the Land Offifig ofMarylan , when he purchased a Warrant for 350 acres of land from John Howard ofGideon. He called this land "Charles' Choice" and on March 10, 1748 a Patent wasissued to him. Charles prospered on his Linganore Valley land, took up adjacentacres of vacant land and on May 24, 1755, we find him with a new Patent called, "Resurvey on Charles‘ Choice", for 930 acres. This land is located on the north andsouth sides of the present Liberty Road, Route 26, just east of the present villageof Unionville, and extends east to cross the valley of the north branch of the Lingenore creek, on which at this point in Charles‘ time, AndrewWormanoperated a mill.Within the ensuing twenty years Charles reduced and rearranged his holdings, by salesand purchases, had a resurvey made April 20, 1772, and on March 23, 1775 a thirdPatent was issued to him for 801 acres, which he called, "The Grove", although itcontained essentially the sameland as the previous patents.

Twoot gr land grangs were held by Woods in this neighborhood. June 21, 1750, JohnHoward of Gideon, purchased for L 20 part of "Wood's Enclosure", on the Linganore, from Joseph and Marygood. This tract, or part of it, subsequently was bought byCol. Charles Hammond. In his Will, dated September ll, 1777, he bequeathed to hischildren "Wood‘s Enclosure" of 2286 acres. (Wood's Enclosure was a local name for"Wood's Lott", belonging to Joseph and Mary Wood.) Joseph and Mary Woodsettled onWood'sLott, west of Unionville, but adjoining Charles‘ Choice. Then adjacent.to andbinding on "Charles' Choice”, "Policy", of 55 acres, was patented to Joseph Wood,August 10, 1753. (See Wood Family of Woodlawn, Ky. Ecc. Adams, Ky, Hist_ Soc.Register No. 47, p. 160, July, 19499)

Page 28: WOOD —WOODS MAGAZINEwvancestry.com/ReferenceMaterial/Files/The_Wood... · GIST & DAMIJRUSCYLL. Sept. 1802 (A.to R) -- In suit of DUNKENSONand wife vs. MOORE,Patent by GOOCH,to JAMESWOOD,12

FREDERICK COUNTYSAGA -- Cont'd;

At the June term of court 1749, Charles Woodsat on the Grand Jury.9 1 1774 he con.tributed 7s 6d to a fund collected in Linganore for the poor of Boston. He mayhave beenla Quaker, because he did not swear to the Oath of Fidelity and Support, butgffgggggo He took no other part in the War of the Revolution, but his son, Henry, appears on an undated muster roll as a bombardier of the Frederick GermanArtilleryas a member ofathe Mattross Companyin the Continental Service lately commandedbyCaptain Gale, and Basil Wood, another son, was a recruiting officer of FrederickCounty. .

Whence Charles Woodcame into Prince George's County is not known. The warrant for"Charles' Choice" he purchased from John Howardof Gideon of Baltimore County, speaksof him as Charles Woodof Prince George's County. It would be interesting to knowifhe was related to his neighbors, Joseph and Mary wood, (who came from St. Mary's Co),of Wood's Enclosure, or Wood's Lott, and Pollicy. Although Charles and Joseph took upland about the same time, lived on neighboring plantations, and both were slave ownersno evidence of relationship has been foundo The family burial lots on both plantations have been destroyed. Theymight have been helpful in proving relationship.

The double log house of Joseph and Mary wood still stands on Wood's Lott, west ofUnionville, (1970). The slave quarters are gone, and the gravestones were dumpedintoa "sink hole". Their lands were all on the Linganore, and the present village ofUnionville lies between them.

Charles‘ wife was named Sarah and according to his Will, proved in Frederick, August22, 1787, she bore him eight children. His eldest daughter Mary, married a Clary, probably a neighbor, since the Clarys settled south of Unionville and near Woodville.Charles Wood, J , his eldest son, a Revolutionary veteran, emggrated to RowanCountyNorth Carolina af r the Revolutionary war; Benjamin Wood, and Sarah wood whomarried William Lamb, removed to Maysville, Mason County, Ky., at the same time;Basil Wood, (already mentioned), Peter Wood, Henry Woodand John Wood, were othersons who remained in Maryland.

Charles, Sr., devised all of his plantation with its "Plantation house" and "olddwellings" and most of'his slaves and livestock to Sarah, his wife, and to three sons,Basil, Henry and John Wood. The latter sold and otherwise disposed of almost half of"The Grove", for on April 24, 1790, they had the remaining land resurveycd, and had aPatent issued to Basil, Henry and John Wood, for 470 acres, which the called "ThreeBrothers Lottga June 9, 1791. Liberty Road. The outbuildings have disappeared and only the mill damwith remnantsof its race remain to indicate the site of Norman'smill not far distant.

The land Patents surrounding "Three Brothers Lott" during Basil Wood's lifetime boreinteresting names. There were "Bite the Biter", "Bite me Softly", and "The BiterBitten”. To the south lay "Resurvey on Cold Friday", patented to Edward Dorsey, another speculator in land, June 15, 1753, parts of which subsequently came into thehands of the Lawrence family, and Shriner family. (My late great uncle Frank Downey, son of Uillia, Jr., of NewMarket, married Fannie Lawrenceof Shrineria, the stonehouse on the Shriner-Lawrence lands south of Unionville, still standing in 1970).

Upton Lawrence was prominent in the early history of Hagerstown. To the west lay"Good Neighbor", patented to Jacob Danner (ancestor of Mrs. Mary Danncr Duddcrar OfUnionville, 1970), in 1776; and ”Pollicy", patented to Joseph WoodAugust 10, 1753.To the north lay "Coomes, his Inheritance”, patented to Dennis Ensey May 25, 1749,and to the east "sapling Ridge", patented to Henry storey, September 10, 1753. Lugen—biehls, Brightwells, Bakers and Wormansalso lived nearby. Pearres came in later.Lugenbiehl gravestones of the Eighteenth century may still be seen standing in afield southwest of "Three Brothers Lott”, on land purchased from Charles Wood, Sr.

This will set free all his slaves andBasil Wood's Hill was proved April 9, 1816. ther Henry, at thegave "Three Brothers Lott" to Basil the younger, son of his brodecease of the testator's widow, Lydia: He mentioned no children. Lydia died intestate at an unknowndate. "Three Brothers Lott" was owned and possibly occupiedby Bgsil the younger until 1838whenhe died, also intestate, apparently without issue.Henry Wood, the veteran, the father of Basil the younger, and also of John, aboutwhomwe shall heafamigg later, had married Sarah MacElfresh, of a then prominentFrederick family ’ June 23, 1788. Henry bough land and sold many parcels ofland. At the time of his death, intestate, in 1836 he ownedthree farms. Twoofthese lay south of Monrovia, NewMarket District, and just north of the "Finger BoardCrossroads", on the east side of the highway, Rt. 75. These farms were made up ofparts of "The Land of Promise", a Plummergrant, "Hickory Plains", and "Berkely",Woodwardand Waters gran s. The third was the "Brick House Farm“, also called bythe family "Rosedale”. ’ This farm was made up of parts of "Resurvey and Addition toDarby's Delight", and "Newfound1andV. Henry Woodis said to have built the red brickhouse still standing on his farm of bricks burned on the farm. [Mr. Vansant, whonowlives in the house, relates an interesting anecdote.i(l943). whena littleboy, he remembers Dr. Jesse W. Downey (of NewMarket) and a "Mr. Wood" stopping inone frosty day to warmup while on a fox hunt. During the conversation over ciderglasses, Mr. Woodtold how the house had been built by his grandfather. This wasCharles Wood,"Forty-niner” as well as fox hunter, one of the sons of Reverend JohnWood, and grandson of Henry.] Henry bought the land from John Pancoast in 1815 sothe house was built subsequent to that date. The farm is bounded on the north by theOld Annapolis Road and on the west by the connecting road, now called Detrick Road, between the Old Annapolis Road and the National Turnpike, entering the latter abouttwo miles ea of NewMarket. It has been owned by the Vansant family for twogenerations. (1945).

While Basil the younger lived in obscurity, dying in 1838, his brother, John was becoming well known. Born 1793, he marrie Ruth HammondBurgess, daughter of John andEleanor (Griffith) Burgess June 6, 1814. It seems likely that Henry Woodmay havebought Newfoundlandand built Rosedale for his son John. At least it is said thatJohn died there, (in 1840), four years after the death of his brother, and it is fairly certain that Ruth bore John sixteen children there. Not only was John a successful

Reverend John died intestate in 1840. This posed quite a problem for his widow, Ruthand her suriving 14 children. In case somereaders might be interested they were:1. Basil Woodwho married Charlotte Hamond.2. John Henry Woodwho married Louise Browning.3. Jacob Gruber Woodwho married (lst) Hammond,2£2nd)Sophia smith.4. Sarah Anne Woodwho married Lebbeus Griffith, Sr.5. Charles Woodwhomarried Katherine worthington.J6. Joseph Woodwhomarried Eva R. Burgess.J (my great grandfather).7. Isaac Newton Wood, M.D. who married Lydia Adams Norris.8. Mary Ellen Wood who married Nicholas Hammond.9. Elizabeth Woodwhomarried Philemon HowardGriffith (of Lebbeus).10. Lydia Ruth HammondWood who married Abraham Diek.. n.11. Rachel Woodwho married Greenbury Etchison.12. Moses Wood who married Mary Etchison.13. Joshua Woodwho married Eliza Talbott.14. Elias Wood who married Amanda Swomley.15. William Woodwho died very young.16. Noel Woodwho died in infancy.

Considerable contention arose between Ruth and her children concerning the disposi~tion of Rev. John's property. The court thereupon appointed a trustee to sepgle heraffairs in the person of ThomasHammondreferred to as Major in the records.(Thomas Hammondof "Black Castle", the Vachel Hammondestate northeast of Libertytown)

Thomas Hammond, after m y hearings and deliberations, (in the National Hotel of NewMarket, Hamilton Stier, Proprietor), with the heirs, sold "Three Brothers Lott" toJohn Cochran in 1841. Thus this land passed out of the Woodownership after theyhad held it nearly one hundred years.

Ruth H. Woodwas awarded as her share part of the "resurvey on the Land of Promise"and a part of "Hickory Plains", the "Rosedale" farm south of Monrovia. Isaac Dond=smap of Frederick County, published 1858, showsher to be living there at that datewith J.H. Wood, her son, on the adjoining farm. On her farm, which is now owned byMrs. B. Swartz, there are still to be seen in 1943 the original house built of logscovered with clapboard, and part of the slaves’ kitchen with a great fireplace. Southof the land leading to the house is the family burial plot grownup into a thicket. From it a number of gravestones were removed to the cemetery in NewMarket. [Thestones found and removed were: Eva R. Burgess, wife of Joseph wood, born November 11,1824, died March 21, 1875 (my great grandmother). Jacob G. A; the same time the gravcstones of Col. (Washington Burgess was son of Capt. John Burgess and Eleanor(Griffith) Burgess, sister of Col. Philemon Griffith.) Joseph Wood,1822-1896, operated the NewMarket Hotel for a period of time. He was the guardian of my grandmother, Annie Mary Griffith, wh was left an orphan by the accidental deaths of herfather, Mordecai Jacob Griffith and mother, Margaret Burgess (Hamond) Griffith.(She was the daughter of Nathan Hammondof Vachel (of Black Castle). Nathan Hamondmarried Charlotte, sister of WashingtonBurgess, Nov. ll, 1812.)
