originate from one culture, they have their own identities. The
Peranakans,Chinese who moved to Malaysia centuries ago, have their own
unique food, blending Chinese cooking techniques with Malay ingredients for
example is laksa (a comes in two variants: the sourasam laksa from Penang
and the coconut milk-based laksa lemakfrom Singapore and the southern
regions of Peninsular Malaysia. The unique flavor of laksa and other Nonya

paste with pestle and mortar, with a very specific texture and density.

ARTS AND MUSIC IN MALAYSIA
Traditional Malaysian art was mainly centered around the areas of
carving, weaving and silversmithing.Traditional art ranges from handwoven
baskets from countryside areas to the silverwork of the Malay courts.Common
artworks include ornamental kris, beetle nut sets.Luxurious textiles known as
Songket are made,as well as the traditional patterned batik fabrics.Malaysian
art has expanded only recently,as before the 1950s Islamic taboos about
drawing people and animals were strong.
Carved wood is used as ornamentation for many items, such as doors and
windows-panels.Woodcarving was never an industry,but an art.Traditional
woodcarves spent years simply to prepare the wood, due to a belief that
woodcarvers need to be a perfect with their wood. The wood also had to match
the buyer,so woodcarving was a very ritiualised task.
Each ethnic group has distinct performing arts, with little overlap between
them. However, Malay art does show some North Indian influence due to the
historical influence of India. Since the Islamisation period, the arts and tourism
ministry have focused on newer dances of Portuguese, Middle Eastern, or
Mughal origin. Malay traditional dances such as joget melayu and zapin.
Nowadays, dikir barat has grown in popularity, and it is actively promoted by
state governments as a cultural icon.Shadow puppet theatre (wayang kulit)
has been popular in Malaysia for centuries. Plays done with shadow puppets

emerged from traditional stories, and most often portray episodes from either
the Ramayana or the Mahabharata. Traditionally, theatrical music is
performed only by men.
Wau
Kite flying is a popular traditional pastime in Terengganu, especially
during harvest time. Apart from the performance and appearance, the sound it
makes when flying is considered important as well.
There are various types of kites such as wau kuching (cat kite), wau
merak (peacock kite), and wau bulan (moon kite). Each kite also comes with a
different design and size. The mark of a good kite is one that rises quickly and
remains flying, no matter what the whims of the wind may be.
The colourful kites are played in the o pen paddy fields and along the sandy
beaches. These places are suitable for flying kites because there are no trees
or tall structures around. In fact, the wind blows strongly in these places.
Normally, the wau is played after the paddy harvesting seasons or when the
fishermen cannot go to fishing due the conditions of the sea (musim tengkujuh). The best time to play the wau is in August and September.

Malaysia Music
A great variety of genres in Malaysian music reflect the specific ethnic
groups of multiracial Malaysian society consisting of
Malay,Chinese,Indian,Dayak,Kadazandusun and other ethnics.
In general, music of Malaysia may be categorized as classical, folk,
syncretic (or acculturated music), popular and contemporary art music.
Classical and folk music emerged during the pre-colonial period and exists in
the form of vocal, dance and theatrical music such as Nobat, Mak Yong, Mak
Inang, Dikir barat, Ulek mayangand Menora. The syncretic music developed
during the post-Portuguese period (16th century) and contains elements fromboth local music and foreign elements of Arabian, Persian, Indian, Chinese
and Western musical and theatrical sources. Among genres of this music
are Zapin, Ghazal, Dondang
sayang,Joget, Jikey, Boria, Keroncongand Bangsawan.
Both Malaysian popular music and contemporary art music are essentially
Western-based music combined with some local elements. In 1950s, the
musicianP.Ramlee helped in creating a Malaysian music that combined folks
songs with Western dance rhythms and western Asian music.

HOLIDAYS AND FESTIVALS
Malaysians have a number of holidays and festivities throughout the year,
on both the federal and state level. Other festivals are celebrated by particular
ethnic or religion groups, but are not public holidays. The main holy days of
each major religion are public holidays. The most popular holiday is the " Hari
Kebangsaan" (Independence Day), also known as "Merdeka" (Freedom), on
31 August commemorating the independence of the Federation of Malaya.
This, as well as Labour Day (1 May), the King's birthday (first Saturday of June)
and some other festivals are major national public holidays.
New Year's Day, Chinese New Year, and the start of the Islamic calendar
are all public holidays. Muslim holidays are highly prominent in Malaysia. The
most important of these is Hari Raya Puasa (also called HariRaya
Aidilfitri), which is the Malay translation of Eid al-Fitr. It is generally a festival
honoured by the Muslims worldwide marking the end of Ramadan, the fasting
month. During Hari Raya Puasa, families will gather at their kampong,to do the
bermaaf-maafantradition,in order to apologize for all the wrongdoings
throughout the years and sharing stories especially with the loved ones whom
they seldom meet.At this day, special cuisine will be served such as rendang
and ketupat while duit rayawill also be given to childrens or teenagers. In
addition to Hari Raya Puasa, they also celebrate Hari Raya Haji (also
called HariRaya Aidiladha, the translation of Eid ul-Adha), Awal Muharram
(Islamic New Year) and Maulidur Rasul (Birthday of the Prophet).
Malaysian Chinese typically hold the same festivals observed by Chinese
around the world. Chinese New Year is the most prominent, lasting for 15
days.

Hindus in Malaysia celebrate Diwali/Deepavali, the festival of
light, while Thaipusam is a celebration in which pilgrims from all over the
country meet at the Batu Caves.Wesak (Malay for Vesak), the day of Buddha's
birth, is a public holiday. Malaysia's Christian community observes most of the
holidays observed by Christians worldwide, most notably Christmas and
Easter. Good Friday, however, is only a public holiday in the two Bornean
states. The harvest festivals of Gawai in Sarawak and Kaamatan in Sabah are
also important for East Malaysians.
A practice known as "open house" ( rumah terbuka) is common during the
festivities, especially during Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Deepavali, Chinese New Year
and Christmas. Open house means that all well -wishers are received and that
everyone regardless of background is invited to attend. Open houses are
normally held at the home of the host and food are also prepared by the host,
however, there are also open houses held at larger public venues especially
when hosted by government agencies or corporations with a lot of local and
wetern delicacies so that the guets can savour those dishes as many as they
want.
This multicultural holidays and festivals is very unique and refreshing for
the outsider especially tourist from outside the Malaysia.Malaysia Ministry of
Tourism Board is promoting all these kind of festivals worldwide, holding a
Malaysia Fair internationally,in order to introduce Malaysia unique cultures to
the world.

i. HOMESTAY PROGRAMME
Homestay Programme is an experience where tourist stay with selected
families, interact and experience the daily life of these families as well as
experiencing Malaysian culture.Homestay is not classified as an
accommodation facilities. It focuses more on lifestyle and experience, which
include culture and economic activities.By experiencing homestay at traditional
village,we can easily know more about the Real Malaysia.
Different homestay offers different types of activities depending on the
culture, food, economic activities and even location. Here, you will discover that
things move at slightly slower pace than the bustling city life.We can immersed
ourselves in the lifestyles of the locals and quickly form a bond with their warm
and welcoming families who will treat them like a family.
Here, you can also learn the gastronomical cultures of Malaysia.Mealtime
is an opportunity to learn more about the Malay culture. First, footwear is
removed before stepping onto the veranda that leads to the host family's front
door. Guests sit cross-legged on the floor adjacent to the dapur or kitchen in a
long dining hall where a tablecloth is spread the length of the room. Before and
after the meal, hands are rinsed using water from a kendi, an ornate silver
kettle with a basin to catch the water. The food is eaten without utensils using
only the right hand. Scooping up the white rice takes some practice but is
made all the more fun by trying out the variety of foods such as chicken curry
and sambal belacon, a spicy shrimp paste. Dessert is often pineapple, papaya,
rambutan, or other fruit grown in nearby orchards. Guests will also learn how to
prepare the food which may include gathering, cooking and washing.
To gain a true lifestyle experience,Homestay Programme also offers
visitors the opportunity to work directly with the locals. You can harvest fruits
that are in season or try your skills at plucking coconut out of palm trees with
the height of 30-40 feet above the ground with bamboo pole.
Spending time with the villagers is also one of great activities. You can

spend time with the children who just return from school and immerse in
traditional games that are still not fade, such as kite-flying,top-spinning and
congkak.Other than that, you can also choose to explore the
sorroundings, spend some time at the local pond or rivers, trying your skills at
riverside fishing or experience the art of farming at paddy farm.
Evenings are often spent quietly enjoying traditional dances and music
performances. Because the profits from the homestay program are shared
co-operatively with the whole village, everyone pitches in to make visitors feel
welcome. This may include impromptu cultural performances of zapin (dances)
or ghazal (guitar music) or even top-spinning. The children provide English
translation and this adds to the charm of learning a new culture by immersion. The kampungs, or villages, that are involved in the homestay programme
are committed to ensuring that experience of the village-style living first-hand.
and are used to welcoming a variety of foreign guests from around the world.
These kampungs have been carefully selected and conform with strict
guidelines set by the Ministry of Tourism so as to bring out t he best of
Malaysia.

ii. Malaysia Eco-Tourism
Malaysia's natural landscape appeals itself quite naturally to eco -tourism.
Visitors are able to immerse themselves in the many rainforest reserves and
well-reserved parks throughout the country. There is really no better place in
the world to experience exotic flora and fauna in their pristine tropical
environment.
Malaysia's rainforests, just a few degrees north of the equator, are among
the oldest in the world - 130,000 years old, to be exact. Even before Malaysia's
independence in 1957, these vast natural reso urces is placed under much and
strict care in oreder to protect the beauty and nature.
It is therefore not surprising that nearly 75% of Malaysia's land area
remains forested, with approximately 60% of that being virgin rainforests. As
one of the twelve mega-biologically diverse countries in the world, Malaysia is
able to boast at least 15,000 species of flowering plants, 286 species of
mammals, 150,000 species of invertebrates, 4,000 species of fishes in
addition to the countless micro-organisms.
Not surprisingly, it is a point of pride for Malaysia that this kind astonishing
level of biodiversity calls Malaysia's rainforests home.Among the biggest and
best-known tropical flora and fauna here are the Sumatran Rhinoceros, the
Sun Bear, the Malayan Tiger, the Orangutan, Rainforest Tarantulas and the
Proboscis Monkey. Borneo is especially well-known for the giant odorous
flower, the Rafflesia - the world's biggest flower.

For tourists keen on exploring Malaysia's biodiversity, among the least
strenuous pastimes is bird-watching. Ideal locations for this include the
mountain resorts of Fraser's Hill and Cameron Highlands, the Kuala Selangor
Bird Sanctuary and a number of wetlands and coastal sanctuaries. All of these
natural bird sanctuaries are within just a few hours' drive from the capital,
Kuala Lumpur. Access is generally convenient although some jungle trekking
may be necessary in some places.
One of the most famous nature park to explore is the country's premier
National Park, Taman Negara, established in 1938. Visitors will find a number
of forest and nature activities here, all of which are safe and supervised by
park rangers.
A visit to Taman Negara should include a walk on the 510m-long forest
canopy bridge suspended 45m above ground level. This unique perspective of
the surrounding rainforest from the level of the leafy canopy is exciting, to be
sure, but not for the weak and non-adventurous soul.
Spelunking, or cave exploration, awaits the adventurous. Inside the Gua
Telinga, or Ear Cave, with its long and narrow tunnels, the lucky spelunker
might come across Whip Spiders or even the harmless and shy Cave Racer, a
8/7/2019 Wonderful Tourism Destination in Malaysi1

white boa constrictor that feeds almost entirely on cave bats. Other caverns
and shorter caves are situated close by, such as the Gua Daun Menari, or
Cave of the Dancing Leaves. Wind blowing across the mouth of the cave
creates intermittent turbulences, which cause fallen leaves to float and twirl.
The many other parks in Malaysia include wetlands such as the Kuala
Selangor Bird Sanctuary and Tanjung Piai, and the forest reserves such as the
Mulu and Niah National Parks in Sarawak. The Niah caves are famous for the
prehistoric human bones excavated there, as well as for the supposedly
'energy-giving' birds' nests(sarang burung) so prized by the Chinese and
harvested by the native community of the area.
In Peninsular (West) Malaysia are the freshwater lakes of Kenyir, Chini
and Bera, where plenty of freshwater fi shes, such as carp and catfish, co-exist
with the giant flesh-eating fish, the Toman.
Those more interested in the cooler climate of the highlands might be
inclined to climb South-east Asia's highest peak, Mount Kinabalu (4,101m) in
Sabah, or to trek up Mount Tahan, accessing it from Taman Negara.
A visit to Malaysia's many marine parks is also a must for the eco-tourist.
These include the Tunku Abdul Rahman Park in Sabah and the Pulau Payar
Marine Park off the state of Kedah, just south of the famous and historical

islands of Langkawi.Here.they offer a diversity of marine lives such as beautiful
coral reel and colourful fish as well as sapphire blue ocean,a paradise for
divers.
On the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia lies the Pulau Redang Marine
Park, while a number of beautiful islands further south, such as Tioman, Aur
and Sibu, await both the adventurous and the romantic. On the eastern shores
of Sabah lies the famed island of Sipadan, declared by Jacques Cousteau as
'an untouched piece of art' in 1989. One of the foremost dive sites in the world,
Sipadan remains relatively unspoilt and virgin due to years of diver
management and environmental controls with only limited numbers of people
being allowed access daily.

Malaysia Agro-Tourism
Malaysia began its post-Independence economy with an agrarian base,
which has prepared it well to develop agricultural and commodities-based
tourism, the hottest trend in eco-tourism today.
Recognizing that agro-tourism holds a fascination for both Malaysians and
visitors alike, organizers of agricultures these days include tours to rubber and
oil palm estates, as well as pepper farms, fish farms, flower nurseries and fruit
orchards. Fruit orchards have proven especially popular with visitors, n ot least
because they get to enjoy the delicious exotic fruit s they are there to learn
about
Visits are structured around a tour offering insight into the cultivation,
care, processing and manufacturing of these commodities for sale or export.
The industry includes crops such as maize, cocoa, rubber, rice, fruits, oil palm
and a variety of other products from which many Malaysians still earn a living.
Many locals and some adventurous visitors hungrily seek out orchards
dedicated to the famous and sometimes detested king of all fruits, the durian.
Sometimes described as 'hell on the outside and heaven on the inside', the
durian has few ambivalent fans, as you either tend to thoroughly enjoy it or
not.
Visitors to durian farms can sample a range of these spiky, custard -like
fruits with pulpy flesh that runs an entire gamut of textures and tastes from
sweet to tart and more!
But durians are obviously not the only choice. In tropical Malaysia, an
amazing array of exotic fruits awaits the fruit aficionado all year around.
Among the many choices are the rambutan, langsat, mangosteen, jackfruit,

pineapple and mango. Visits to these fruit farms often involve tucking into
ready-to-eat freshly picked fruits.
Visitors to the highlands must pay a visit to the tea estates which grace
their slopes. A number of these have been established since the early part of
the last century, and harvesting and processing methods have changed little
since.
Cameron Highlands, with its gentle slopes surrounded by loftier hills, is
especially noted for its long-established estates. Most have excellent visitor
facilities and provide guided tours of the tea factories.
On rubber estates, visitors have the opportunity to experience first -hand
how to tap a rubber tree and witness how latex is processed - from
coagulation to pressing and smoking. Malaysia is among the world's largest
producers of this extremely valuable and versatile product.
Another of the country's largest export commodities is palm oil. Today,
Malaysia is a world leader in the research and development of this
multi-purpose fruit. The clusters of orange-red fruits produce refined cooking
oil and other palm-olein products for use in the cosmetic and chemical
industries.
In the northern regions of Peninsular Malaysia, a nu mber of spice and herb
farms represents the countryside. Nutmeg is especially abundant. While over
in East Malaysia, visitors to pepper farms in Sarawak will be fascinated to
know that black and white pepper come from the same tree. The difference is
achieved in the processing of the corns. White pepper is more mature, having
been soaked and had its outer skin removed before drying, while black pepper
is dried in its original state.
A number of these destinations have stay-over facilities with a wide range
